Essential Purcell

The "Essential" Purcell? Well, you could get a bunch of critics to argue about that for a few days, but in the meantime, here is a sampler of highlights from the King's Consort's three admirable Purcell series: the Complete Odes and Welcome Songs, Complete Anthems and Services, and Complete Secular Solo Songs. There are, of course, some of Purcell's most-performed pieces (which probably are "essential"): Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, "Sound the trumpet" from Come, ye sons of Art, Rejoice in the Lord alway (the "Bell Anthem," named for the string figure at the opening that sounds like pealing bells), the gently patriotic "Fairest isle, all isles excelling" (sung by a miscast James Bowman), and a selection from the funeral music for Queen Mary. There are also some delightful surprises--particularly among the little-known secular songs and church music. The plaintive "O fair Cedaria" gets a lovely performance by Barbara Bonney (a singer not usually associated with Purcell); tenor Rogers Covey-Crump (possibly the ideal high tenor for Purcell) sings the enchanting "If music be the food of love"; the church anthems "Let mine eyes run down with tears" and "Remember not, O Lord, our offences" have some startling harmonies as daring as any Monteverdi ever wrote. If you're unfamiliar with Purcell, this reasonably priced disc is a good place to start exploring without a big initial investment. --Matthew Westphal

Miracle Maker: The Story of Jesus (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)
List Price: $19.99
Sale Price: $12.92

This animated feature-length life of Jesus boasts a stellar pedigree. Originally a BBC: Wales production, it showcases the voices of some of Britain's finest actors in any medium: Ralph Fiennes as a brooding and humble Jesus, Miranda Richardson as Mary Magdalene, Richard E. Grant as John the Baptist, and David Thewlis as Judas. The lovely, flute-heavy score is by Oscar winner Anne Dudley (The Full Monty). And clearly a lot of expense has gone into the Claymation-like animation. But while it's hard to find fault with the rendering of this familiar story--it's respectful and definitely done, you might say, by the Book--it would have been nice if there had been a tad more joy, if it walked a bit lighter in its sandals. As it is, all the characters seem consistently subdued, whether they're expressing angst, rage, terror, or bliss--none of which is helped by the figures' blank-eyed stares (if animators are becoming ever more sophisticated, why can't they get rid of those creepy Charlie McCarthy gazes once and for all?). Still, the weight of having such formidable actors play these familiar roles lends the production a certain credibility, and parents looking for good religious videos that won't insult their kids' intelligence will be thrilled. --Anne Hurley
The greatest story ever told comes to life in spectacular clay animation. The Miracle Maker: The Story of Jesus will raise your faith to new heights. Featuring the voices of an all-star cast, Christ's ageless tale unfolds around the story of a family seeking help for an ailing daughter. When they cross paths with an extraordinary carpenter named Jesus, the family's faith is put to the test as the father is torn between allegiance to the king and the desperate need for the miraculous powers of God. Here are some more information for William Daniels:

In March 2008, Randy Broad was diagnosed with Stage 3 Lung Cancer. After he got over the initial shock and fear this knowledge caused him, he decided that rather than fight his cancer, he would choose to live with it. That doesn't mean he didn't seek treatment, but he also accepted his cancer and decided not only that it would not stop him from living, but he would do everything he could to live an Extraordinary Life. Although the doctors predicted his life would cease long before this book was published, Randy credits his positive attitude and his efforts to make each day extraordinary with his prolonged life.
But as Randy points out in the first paragraph, this book is not about cancer. It's about living "as if you have cancer." He hopes the book will make the reader appreciate life and see how extraordinary it is-a lesson he learned the hard way-but a lesson the reader can collect from these pages to change his or her life.
Soon after being diagnosed with cancer, Randy asked his children what they would most like him to leave them-what could he write down for them so they would have it after he was no longer around. His daughter requested that he give her his knowledge about running a business, and his son simply wanted Randy to share stories about his life. The result is "It's an Extraordinary Life: Don't Miss It," an amalgamation of practical and astute advice about business and how to live life to its fullest. Randy asked his friend, June Grushka-Rosen, a life-coach, to assist him. June provided numerous "Mastery Questions" and follow-up sections to Randy's stories that ask readers to focus on specific situations and start their own journeys toward how to make their lives extraordinary. Between Randy's advice and examples and June's exercises, readers will find that "It's an Extraordinary Life" will also be a life-changing journey for them.
This book is so rich in personal stories, from Randy's days trying to make it as an actor in Hollywood-including being a stunt-double to Jeff Daniels and learning how to earn while he slept from the residual income of making commercials-to how he partnered with Microsoft to plan extraordinary golf tournaments. He tells heart-wrenching stories about the importance of enjoying a snow day with his family, and how to look for positive aspects in less than optimal situations. The entertaining stories of different characters he met in Hollywood are alone worth the price of the book. The lessons he learned and his advice are invaluable.
In addition, the book is full of wonderfully humorous yet poignant stories, and inspirational quotations. Readers should prepare to open their eyes to the magic of life-it is all around them in every moment and experience, and if we live as if we have cancer, we will come to appreciate it-let Randy Broad and June Grushka-Rosen show you how.
For all the fuss that "Tuesdays with Morrie" made in the book world over a decade ago, "It's an Extraordinary Life" is as full of wisdom and far more entertaining. And who needs Jack Lemmon? Randy Broad is an experienced actor. As Randy says about life:
My recommendation is to go for the highest highs and accept the corresponding lows. Because life is short, if you don't experience the greatest on the top end, what's the point? A life of living in the middle of the bell curve? I don't think so. Taking the maximum risk you can take will make for living a more extraordinary life. After all, if your life isn't worth making a movie about once it's over, it must have been pretty dull.
Randy, let me know when the movie tickets go on sale. Until then, readers will just have to enjoy the book.

William Daniels Exhibitions and Paintings at Saatchi-gallery
William Daniels was born on 1976 in Brighton. In their rustic aesthetic and exaggerated spatial rendering William Daniels’s paintings, at first glance, appear to be contemporary explorations of cubism. They are, however, immaculately drafted still-lifes. Daniels begins each piece by making immensely detailed collages: reconstructing well known art historical paintings from bits of found paper, fag packs, and household products. Using these as maquettes, he then translates each fold, frayed edge, and bevelled texture into highly realistic paintings.
William Daniels slow process of working from reproductions reflects how often our experiences of the world are formed from secondary material and documentary sources. Daniels' seems to deliberately play with traditions of painting and the notion of the artist present before his subject. Through his choices of subject matter Daniels' painting often appear antiquated and incongruous with the nature of modern life - as if Daniels' were nostalgic for this loss of experience. Daniels' paintings hold a further level of complexity that is derived from their appearance as faithful copies of original masterpieces.

Conclusions:
The baffling complexity of Daniels' paintings often lends a solidity and permanence to the otherwise throwaway ephemeral materials use to construct each Marquette. In past works Daniels' has exclusively chosen to reinterpret pre-twentieth century masterpieces including The Abbey in the Oak Wood by Casper David Friedrich, The Incredulity of St Thomas by Caravaggio and Raphael's The Resurrection

Which is Older Evan Williams or Jack Daniels?
I love Evan Williams and I am starting to think that Jack copied Evan but i am not sure. Evan is 50% cheaper here in Illinois then Jack and tastes much better. Please answer only if you know for a fact, My thanks and best answer will go to someone who can give me any proof.
According to the Jack Daniels web site, Jack started distilling in 1863 at the Dan Call distillery. He built the JD distillery in 1866.
http://www.jackdaniels.com/TheDistillery/
Seeing how Evan Williams died in 1810, he was clearly the first to distill whisky between the two.
As to "copying", both were using traditional whisky methods brought over by the Welsh and Irish and using the char-barrel aging process supposedly started by Elijah Craig and improved by James Crow. If you want to find the first, you'll be drinking Scotch or Irish Whisky made in a poitin/potcheen.
Jacksonville Jaguars Team Report
When Jaguars defensive tackle D'Anthony Smith sacks the quarterback or stops a ball carrier in the backfield this fall, don't be surprised to hear the fans in the stands start booing. But those chants of "Boo, boo, boo" will be good sounds as that's the nickname the newest member of the Jaguars defensive line goes by.
