Vegas Vacation (Widescreen Edition) Vegas Vacation (Widescreen Edition)
List Price: $5.97
Sale Price: $2.79

Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the casino, along comes the Griswold family from the popular series of National Lampoon's Vacation movies, raising a ruckus in the now family-friendly gambling capitol of the world. Clark (Chevy Chase), the bumbling Griswold patriarch, gets into his usual quota of trouble--especially on a sightseeing trip to the Hoover Dam (where puns on the word "dam" come fast, furious, and idiotic). Meanwhile, Mrs. Griswold (Beverly D'Angelo) gets to sing an ear-piercing rendition of "Lovin' You" on stage with her idol, Wayne Newton (one of the movie's comedic highlights), while son Rusty poses as a high roller and daughter Audrey trains as an exotic dancer. Randy Quaid reprises his scene-stealing role from the original Vacation movie, but let's face it--the series had already worn out its welcome, and this belated sequel earns a few good laughs but hardly qualifies as a worthy revival. Not bad as no-brainers go, but not up to par with the original film, and its better sequels like National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. --Jeff Shannon

It's a sure bet for comical calamity when Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo and their offspring pack up the car and head for the neon lights of Las Vegas. Once there, the Griswold kids get mixed up with mobsters and go-go dancers, D'Angelo is wooed by Wayne Newton, and Chevy winds up on stage with Siegfried and Roy. Randy Quaid also stars. 95 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, French Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English, Spanish, French; theatrical trailer.

Timothy Dalton's second and last shot at playing James Bond isn't nearly as much fun as his debut, two years earlier, in the 1987 The Living Daylights. This time Bond gets mad after a close friend (David Hedison) from the intelligence sector is assassinated on his wedding day, and 007 goes undercover to link the murder to an international drug cartel. Robert Davi makes an interesting adversary, but as with most of the Bond films in the '70s, '80s, and '90s--and especially since the end of the cold war--one has to wonder why we should still care about these lesser villains and their unimaginative crimes. Still, Dalton did manage in his short time with the character to make 007 his own, which neither Roger Moore did nor Pierce Brosnan did. --Tom Keogh

The Oscar-winning progenitor of the airborne disaster film genre features a memorable turn by John Wayne as a veteran airline pilot unable to overcome surviving a crash which killed his wife and child. Serving as co-pilot to brash rival Robert Stack on a Honolulu-San Francisco passenger flight that sustains a midair emergency, Wayne must try to safely land the damaged plane before the fuel runs out. Co-stars Laraine Day, John Howard, David Brian, Jan Sterling, and Claire Trevor; William Wellman directs. 148 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital stereo Surround; Subtitles: English; audio commentary; featurettes; theatrical trailers; premiere footage; photo gallery. Two-disc set.

John Wayne personally produced many of his '50s films, which is why some of them have languished in corporate limbo following his death. The High and the Mighty was one of his most popular vehicles (no pun intended). This long, necessarily sedentary drama aboard an endangered airliner is a CinemaScope bridge between 1932's Grand Hotel and 1970s disaster movies. Despite Wayne's iconic presence as a pilot--now copilot--who survived the plane crash that wiped out his family, it's an ensemble movie with an impressive cast: Robert Stack sharing the cockpit, Oscar® nominees Claire Trevor and Jan Sterling, Laraine Day, Robert Newton, Paul Kelly, John Qualen, Regis Toomey, the ubiquitous Paul Fix, and director William A. Wellman's good-luck character actor Douglas Fowley. Dimitri Tiomkin's score won the Oscar, though the fondly remembered theme song isn't as prominent as you'd expect. Wings veteran William H. Clothier shot the aerial footage. --Richard T. Jameson

Sammy Davis, Jr., Dean Martin, Frank "The Chairman" Sinatra, those other two guys - wow, has there ever been a better act in the history of Las Vegas than The Rat Pack!?

Sure, the king of them all, Elvis Presley, is famous in Vegas. There's also Wayne Newton, Tony Bennett and Celine Dion, to name a few more. The Rat Pack's success and reverence crushes the entire lot however; the 4-man group (sometimes 3-man) has become the true archetype of Vegas excess.

The Rat Pack is Back is considered to be the best tribute going to the now-deceased members of the original group. It wasn't well received at the start, and it has now been through two different hotels, currently playing its third - and if the guys of the group have anything to say about it, this will be the last stop for a while.

After moving from the hard-to-find confines of the Greek Islands, the show is now front and center at The Plaza. The showroom is definitely nostalgic, and in today's Vegas, that means unique.

Basically, no one has bothered to redesign the Plaza room since the 1970s, so not only do the members of The Rat Pack is Back evoke the sights and sounds of the original group, but the venue also provides the original ambience without having to try at all.

One of the biggest criticisms facing any novelty tribute act, much less one on this scale, is that the recreation needs to be brilliant, or else people would rather sit home and listen to old records and watch the Dean Martin Roasts on DVD. The guys playing the part here seem to do the real Rat Pack justice. Remember, it's not only about singing.

The original Rat Pack had a strange charisma between the guys as they bounced back and forth from crooner status to legitimate stand-up comedians. Anyone trying to recreate this magic has to know that failure is not only an option, but almost a certainty if your A-game isn't on constant display.

Kyle Diamond plays the part of Sammy Davis, Jr., with Johnny Edwards donning a vintage Dean Martin suit and even adding the occasional drink in hand and Mickey Joseph appears brilliantly as Joey Bishop. The Sammy impression is spot-on, from the looks down to the Bojangles' boogie.

Brian Duprey, the show's Frank Sinatra, is also great at what he does. His voice isn't as clear as Sinatra's, and it certainly isn't able to fill up the room without a microphone like a young Francis in his prime, but he definitely looks the part and brings the kind of swagger to the stage that you know Ol' Blue Eyes would appreciate.

There's really nothing different to expect here if you're privy at all to these types of classic revues. The guys attempt to recreate the magic that once was. The only difference in these shows is how well they do it compared to the others that have tried. The Rat Pack is Back is certain to impress people with their realism. It's the closest you'll come to actually being in a room with the guys during a live performance.
