Nat Hentoff's liner notes are charmingly dated, but Dylan's idiosyncratic singing, unexpected lyrics, and inimitable guitar and harmonica playing are as immediate and relevant as whatever you heard on the radio today. This documentary hosted by James Burke is a fascinating examination of the concept of how we see things, specifically how images that appear to our eyes to be three-dimensional are rendered convincingly on flat surfaces. Starting out in a movie studio special effects lab, Burke explains how visual illusions practiced today actually began during the Renaissance, when painters first mastered the skills of incorporating the idea of depth into paintings. The principle of "linear perspective," in which parallel lines all diverge to a common vanishing point, sounds complicated, but the examples shown in this documentary make the idea perfectly clear to the layperson. By way of contrast, paintings completed before the Renaissance are shown, and it's immediately clear to the viewer that artists who hadn't mastered perspective drew scenes that appear flat on the canvas. But when artists such as Brunelleschi and Michelangelo practiced using perspective, art suddenly jumped forward. Quotes from Leonardo da Vinci's writings, in which he talked about perspective and the effects of light, are offered along with examples of his paintings that illustrate beautifully how a master used a scientific principle to create great art. This is an unusual documentary that makes fascinating a subject that most people have never considered, though it relates to things we see everyday. --Robert J. McNamara

David O. Selznick wanted Gone with the Wind to be somehow more than a movie, a film that would broaden the very idea of what a film could be and do and look like. In many respects he got what he worked so hard to achieve in this 1939 epic (and all-time box-office champ in terms of tickets sold), and in some respects he fell far short of the goal. While the first half of this Civil War drama is taut and suspenseful and nostalgic, the second is ramshackle and arbitrary. But there's no question that the film is an enormous achievement in terms of its every resource--art direction, color, sound, cinematography--being pushed to new limits for the greater glory of telling an American story as fully as possible. Vivien Leigh is still magnificently narcissistic, Olivia de Havilland angelic and lovely, Leslie Howard reckless and aristocratic. As for Clark Gable: we're talking one of the most vital, masculine performances ever committed to film. --Tom Keogh

The two-part adventure Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu is based on a line of toys Lego introduced in 2011. Kai, a young blacksmith, is eager--too eager--to forge a great sword. He initially snubs the unassuming Sensei Wu, the master of Spinjitzu martial arts. When Kai's sister Nya is kidnapped by Samukai and his skeleton army from the Underworld, Wu realizes the evil Garmadon is using Samukai to find four legendary weapons that will give him enormous power. Wu trains Kai to join his student-warriors, Jay, Zane, and Cole, and keep Garmadon from seizing power. Masters of Spinjitzu is a lightweight, product-based adventure, but it's not a terribly original one. The training sequence, which pits Kai against a series of armed mechanical devices, borrows heavily from Kung Fu Panda. Other elements recall Naruto and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the filmmakers blithely mix Chinese, Japanese, and Western elements. But little kids who love their Lego toys will probably overlook these shortcoming and enjoy the adventure, which is obviously designed to kick off a series. Parents should be prepared to field requests for the many toys that appear in Masters of Spinjitzu. (Unrated; suitable for ages 5 and older: cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon
