Can anyone recommend a virus removal programme to get rid of the Windows XP antivirus virus ?

I have Norton anti virus installed, so although it's not allowing it to take over, but it's constantly popping up with warnings and is slowing everything down !!

your first problem is having "Norton's" installed please download the removal tool from there web site (Yes it's that bad) and then replace it with "AVG 8" which is far better and will also not slow your system down and it totally FREE. your problem of XP anti-virus 2008 on your system, sorry but you will have lots of problems tiring to remove this and the best way forward is to reformat and then reinstall your OS again (sorry to say). sorry i can't help you any more.
