The mantle of “one man can make a difference” may be passed on to Mike Tracuer (Bruening), the son of original Knight Rider Michael Knight (David Hasselhoff, who makes a cameo in the pilot).

A former Army Ranger, he now drives the Knight Industries Three Thousand (voiced by Val Kilmer): a GT500KR Mustang loaded with nanobot and has the ability to transform himself into any vehicle.

Helping Mike is Sarah Graiman, his friend and love interest whose father (Bruce Davison) was one of the people that created KITT and its predecessor. Taking up the namesake of his father, Mike and KITT hit the road to justice.

When the new Knight Rider aired last fall, the series was set apart from its original. The very first 13 episodes dealt with two arcs: Mike’s mysterious past and KITT’s antithesis KARR.

In the beginning, Mike and KITT were under the employ of Knight Industries, a law enforcement and government agency that dealt with international espionage, spies, and foreign intrigue.

Like the short-lived syndicated Team Knight Rider (1997-98), the writers took this show way too seriously because the original Knight Rider had humor and heart, for it was about three things:

1. A young loner on a crusade to champion the cause of the innocent, the helpless, the powerless in a world of criminals who operate above the law

Michael Knight was definitely a modern-day knight — a hero that helps those the law can’t or won’t help against the powerful and corrupt. He fights for honor and justice on behalf of the people.

2. A lone crusader into a dangerous world … the world of the Knight Rider

In Knight Rider, it’s simple — there is good and there is evil. Michael and KITT were the Lone Ranger and Tonto of science fiction and fantasy: traveling from town to town righting injustice for that greater and common good.

3. One man can make a difference

Though the Foundation for Law & Government (FLAG) had the symbol on its semi, Michael Knight represented it: the white knight that always does what is right.

But by the time the writers decided to switched gears and go old school, it was too late. Despite improving over the last four episodes — including the rebirth of FLAG at the end — NBC pulled the brakes on Knight Rider
and cancel it this spring.
