Set for release by Universal in October, 2010, and produced by T Bone Burnett, The Union marks the culmination of a mutual musical adoration that began in the late 1960s, ahead of Elton's debut US performance in 1970 at The Troubadour Club in Los Angeles. The album is a collaboration between Elton and Leon Russell, with songs by Elton and Bernie Taupin; by Elton, Bernie and Leon; by Elton and Leon and by Leon alone. The Union was recorded in Los Angeles earlier this year, with guest musicians including Brian Wilson, Booker T, Don Was and Neil Young. Cameron Crowe has filmed the sessions for a documentary, creating too a moment of history as this is the first time that the genesis of Elton's music has been recorded on film. Critics who have had an early preview of the album are united in praise for the work that Elton describes as a "Seventies record with a modern feel."

A solid and entertaining biopic, Walk the Line works less as a movie than an actors' showcase for its stars. Joaquin Phoenix's total immersion into the skin of singer Johnny Cash is startling--watching it, you can't believe this is the same guy who whined about being "vexed" in Gladiator. As he evolves from a farm boy to gospel croonin' plunker to the Man in Black, Phoenix disappears into Cash's deep baritone, his way of slinging the guitar onto his back, and his hunched-up style of strumming. But it's more than just picking up mannerisms: Phoenix also sings as Johnny Cash, and it's quite impressive. The story of how Johnny Cash became Johnny Cash traces from his childhood under a distant father (Robert Patrick) to his early attempts at a music career, during which he married his girlfriend Vivian (Ginnifer Goodwin). During a tour with the likes of Elvis (Tyler Hilton) and Jerry Lee Lewis (Waylon Malloy Payne), he encounters singer June Carter (Reese Witherspoon), and his love for her--and her rejection of him through the years--spurs him into drugs, drinking, and depression. As with most movies based on real-life singers, as his popularity grows, the women come a-flockin', and the childhood demons surface. Witherspoon, who matches Phoenix drawl for drawl, plays June both as a sassy spitfire whose charm breaks your heart, and as a sympathetic friend who tries to help Cash get over--well, her. The love story is what endures, but the movie comes most alive during its musical numbers, and even if you're not a country fan, it may just get you to run out and buy a Johnny Cash album.--Ellen A. The phrase wildly popular ventriloquist was supposed to have gone out of the language sometime in the 1970s, at the latest. But here's Jeff Dunham, a huge 21st-century-star and a man who unashamedly speaks through his puppets… or do they speak through him? In Controlled Chaos, Dunham presents a live concert performance that leans heavily on three favorite dummies: cranky old man Walter, infidel-hating skeleton Achmed the Dead Terrorist, and the mischievous purple whatzit, Peanut. (Lesser roles are doled out to José Jalapeño, the talking chili pepper on a stick, and Achmed's half-blown-up son.) Dunham's act is exceptionally polished, and he gets some honest laughs from his no-dummies opening monologue, as he mocks his own childhood via some very geeky school photographs. Then come the routines: Walter makes fun of Africans who live in houses made of elephant dung, Peanut does a drawn-out routine about the challenging accents of employees at Chinese restaurants, and Achmed (by now Dunham's most consistently successful bit) rails against everybody. Dunham's alleged "political incorrectness" looks a lot like old-school adolescent humor, and there's little in the mainstream-just-slightly-racy act that your mom can't enjoy--although the DVD comes with a "Bleeped Version" of the concert, just in case. Even if you don't cotton to Dunham's jokes, his skill at presenting well-defined characters (and at creating meta-gags about ventriloquist acts) is on full display here. The disc includes outtakes of on-stage flubs and some behind-the-scenes material. --Robert Horton
