Attack and Release

Of all the two-piece rock bands (Dresden Dolls, The White Stripes, The Kills, John & Jehn) out there making a royal racket, The Black Keys are by far the least affected by the last three decades of popular music, and evolution. Even more so than Jack & Meg. Which makes you check the album credits twice and then seek a second opinion--produced by celebrated uber-producer, superstar DJ and one half of Gnarls Barkley, the ubiquitous and really quite modern Danger Mouse?! No, your eyes do not deceive you, but thankfully neither do your ears. He may have brought a discipline and expensive sheen to Attack & Release, the riffing is buffed up real good, but this is essentially the same band that continues to live less of a life and more a Jimi Hendrix Experience. If there is a change it's that for the first time their foot is teased off the accelerator, with "Lies", "Remember When (Side A)" and "Oceans & Streams" loosening their shoulders and playing a more chilled brand of dusty sunset southern blues, adding in keys and new layers of texture (is that really a flute on "Same Old Thing"?!). There's still plenty of chance, on the massive Zeppelin-esque "Strange Times" and "Remember When (Side B)" for instance, to leave a boot mark though. More release than attack this time around, but the key still fits. --James Berry

Covering the entire 20th century in one video series is an ambitious project, but one that Peter Jennings and ABC News are up to. In The Century: America's Time, a 12-part documentary on six videotapes that is a companion to the book of the same name, Jennings guides us through a century of technology and advancement like no other. As he says in his introduction to episode 1, "Seeds of Change," "Unlike previous centuries where leadership was defined by royalty and other rulers, the 20th century more than any other was shaped by the will and actions of the common man." The series is a sweeping presentation of the United States of the 1900s and tries to encompass a mind-boggling amount of history. And while at moments the videos may leave you longing for more, Jennings does an excellent job of creating smooth segues between disparate pieces. The first episode, for instance, begins with the influx of immigrants at the turn of the century and touches on Jim Crow laws, moving pictures, planes, Henry Ford, the sinking of the USS Maine, child labor, suffragettes, the Panama Canal, imperialism, and more, right up to the beginning of World War I. The archival footage is stunning and interviews with historians, veterans, journalists, POWs, politicians, authors, celebrities, and common people help bring the past to life again. Mickey Spillane discusses the speakeasies of the 1920s; Dennis Hopper talks about Easy Rider in the '60s; Tom Wolfe reads from The Bonfire of the Vanities for the episode on the '80s. Eudora Welty, E.L. Doctorow, Martin Scorsese, John Updike, Pat Buchanan, Oliver Stone, Stephen E. Ambrose, among many others, lend their voices to this documentary. Yet, despite the great names, at times the pictures and people are allowed to speak for themselves, without intrusive narration--the stark images of the Challenger explosion or the sad words of a political activist mourning the death of his partner to AIDS are more powerful because of it. This chronological tale (with the exception of the last episode, "Then and Now," which is arranged thematically) is an insightful and poignant reminder of all the marvels--and tragedies--of America in the 20th century. --Jenny Brown

School of Assassins (United States School of the Americas)
Sale Price: $7.50

|
SCHOOL OF ASSASSINS (Narrated by Susan Sarandon) was nominated for an Academy Award in 1995 (Best Short Documentary). This short film examines how U.S. taxpayers foot the bill for a school on U.S. soil that has graduated some of the worst human rights violators in the hemisphere. Since it was established in 1946, the United States Army School of the Americas has trained thousands of Latin American and Caribbean soldiers. Among them, we learn in the expose, are the former dictators of Argentina, Bolivia, Honduras and Panama. Using rarely seen footage, this documentary shows how officers who studied at the school are responsible for the massacres of tens of thousands of people, including Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador. In addition to shedding light on the secret world of the School of the Americas, this film also follows efforts of church people, and members of Congress who try to close it down.

Originally manufactured for American troops fighting in World War II, this KA-BAR full-size hunting knife sports a leather handle and a 7-inch straight-edge blade made with 1095 cro-van steel. The knife features a U.S. Marine Corp. stamp and was made in the United States. Also included is a leather sheath made in Mexico. Specifications: Weight: 0.70 pounds Blade length: 7 inches Overall length: 11 7/8 inches Shape: Clip Stamp: USMC Edge angle: 20 degrees Steel: 1095 Cro-Van Grind: Flat Handle material: Leather How KA-BAR Knives Are Made Making a quality KA-BAR product requires the talent of experienced craftspeople performing dozens of processes with precision and skill. Each knife undergoes specific manufacturing processes to ensure corrosion resistance, strength, edge-holding ability, and an out-of-the-box, razor-sharp cutting edge. Some of these manufacturing processes are highlighted below. Blanking: Using a 100-ton blanking press, KA-BAR can blank out nearly 9,000 blades in one full day of operation. Tang Stamping: Tang stamping is often used to identify a product's manufacturer, the country in which the product was made, and an item number. Heat Treating: To begin the three-step heat-treat process of stainless-steel blades, KA-BAR first runs the blades through a 70-foot conveyor oven that takes approximately one hour to cycle. Cryogenic Quenching: The second step in a three-phrase heat-treat process, KA-BAR cryogenically freezes its stainless-steel blades to -120 degrees F to optimize blade performance. Tempering: Tempering stainless-steel blades for approximately seven hours in a walk-in oven enhances steel toughness. KA-BAR is well known for its three-phase heat-treat process in which tempering is the last step. Grinding: KA-BAR knives feature flat- or hollow-ground blades. Flat grinds are best for jobs in which there will be great lateral stress. Hollow grinds provide a fine, extremely sharp edge that is perfect for more delicate tasks. Leather Handle Compression: KA-BAR's famous oval-shaped leather handle construction is accomplished by compressing leather washers onto the tang, shaping and coloring them, and then fastening them on with a pinned-on butt cap. Cap/Pin Assembly: The butt cap or pommel is attached to the handle of a knife with a steel pin. The pin is inserted into the butt cap, driven part way through the tang, then ground off and painted. Inspection: Each KA-BAR knife is subject to a multiple-step inspection process before being released for shipping. Manufacturer's Warranty KA-BAR Knives warrants, to the original purchaser of the knife only, that this knife will be free from defects in material and craftsmanship under normal use and maintenance for the lifetime of the original purchaser. This limited warranty does not apply to any failure of, defect in, or damage to the knife caused by normal wear and tear or by improper use, including throwing the knife or using the blades as a can opener, chisel, pry bar, screwdriver, or digging tool or for any heavy work for which the knife was not designed. If the knife fails to satisfy this limited warranty, the company will repair or replace the knife or substitute a knife of comparable value, at the company's option. Amorphous solar panels are created by spraying silicon onto glass in very thin layers, and are commonly known as thin film solar panels. This process allows them to be better at generating electricity in all lighting conditions, including cloudy or shady environments. They have a maximum operating temperature range of -40 to 176-degrees Fahrenheit, requiring virtually no maintenance. They can even withstand impacts from one-inch hailstones at 50 miles-per-hour. The Sunforce 50022 5-Watt Solar Battery Trickle Charger is designed to maintain an existing battery charge, and not to fully recharge a battery. It can remain connected to a vehicle battery at all times and will not adversely affect its operation or electrical components. Unless the trickle charger is permanently mounted, you should remove and store it to prevent physical harm while the vehicle is in motion.

In the wake of Guy Ritchie's reimagining, the BBC puts its own stamp on Arthur Conan Doyle's sleuth--and sets him in a London filled with cell phones and laptops. In the pilot, director Paul McGuigan (a keen visual stylist) introduces Sherlock Holmes (Atonement's Benedict Cumberbatch) as a "high-functioning sociopath" and Dr. John Watson (The Office's Martin Freeman) as an army veteran with posttraumatic stress disorder. Through a mutual friend, the two become flatmates at 221B Baker Street (Una Stubbs plays their landlady). Holmes, who consults with Scotland Yard inspector Lestrade (Rupert Graves) on his trickier cases, drafts Watson to assist him. In "Study in Pink," four people commit suicide by poison. When Holmes sets out to establish a link, he falls right into the culprit's clutches. Other cases concern a smuggling operation ("The Blind Banker") and a mad bomber ("The Great Game"). Though he doesn't make a formal entrance until episode three, an infamous figure from Sherlock's future has a hand in each mystery, while the detective's brother, Mycroft (co-creator Mark Gatiss), first appears when he tries to hire Watson for a case of his own, an offer that gives the good doctor pause. Through his job at a medical office, Watson also meets Sarah (Zoe Telford), who becomes his girlfriend. Part of the fun of Jeremy Brett's Holmes (and Agatha Christie's Poirot) came from the period details, so this update takes a little getting used to--as does the occasional mumbled line--but Cumberbatch and Freeman share an enjoyable Odd Couple rapport, marked by flashes of deadpan wit, which compensates for the absence of deerstalker caps (Holmes favors scarves) and journals (Watson maintains a website). Extras include commentary on the finale, the original pilot, and a featurette, in which cocreator Steven Moffat (Doctor Who) notes that Cumberbatch was his only choice for the title role. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Here are some more information for United States:

The Bald Eagle, National Symbol of the United States of America
For many years I taught my fifth grade students about the symbols of the United States of America. Over the years I have grown to love our national symbol, the American Bald Eagle. Many students are shocked to learn that our national symbol is not the flag, but the Bald Eagle.
In 1782 it was chose as the National Bird and then as our national emblem in 1787. You can find it on the Great Seal of the United States with its wings spread wide and a shield for his breast. The shield has 13 red and white stripes. In its right talon it holds an olive branch and, if you care to count, you will find that the olive branch has 13 leaves and 13 berries. This olive branch represents the United States desire for peace. In the Bald Eagles left talon is a bundle of 13 arrows that represent our willingness to fight for our freedom, if necessary. Finally in its beak is a scroll with the motto “E Pluribus Unum” which means ‘one out of many’.
The Bald Eagle also appears on the Presidential Seal, most coins, paper money and many stamps.
There are many types of eagles all over the world, but the American Bald Eagle only lives on the North American Continent. That is one reason that the Golden Eagle was not chosen because it lives in Europe, also.
It has been reported that at one of the first battles of the Revolutionary War the noise of the battle awoke sleeping eagles who flew from their nests circling the men fighting below. Their shrill cries blended with the cries of the fighting men. Some of them said they are “shrieking for freedom”.
When born the Bald Eagle is born it is gray and not the graceful bird of flight that you see five years later after it has developed it’s white tail feathers and head feathers.
The Bald Eagle is at the top of the food chain living in the tops of lofty mountains and near coasts and lakes where fish abound. They represent boundless freedom as they soar through the blue skies.
When you first see this bird he is really impressive. It has a 2 ½ - 3 foot body and can spread its sings 6-8 feet. When it spreads those wings and takes flight you catch your breath because they are so beautiful. To see their nests (aerie) in trees you would look for a tree that is usually over seventy five feet tall. The nests themselves are about five feet in diameter and just as deep.
There are many interesting facts about the Bald Eagle, such as its diving speed which can reach 100mph as it goes for a fish. At one time they were being killed in record numbers for their beautiful feathers. The government intervened and put them on the endangered list.
The term ‘eagle eyes’ refers to their ability to see 1 ½ miles away. We need to keep an eagle eye on our freedoms that are represented by this noble bird, The American Bald Eagle, so that we don’t loose them.
About the Author
Why is the United States considered a federalist government?
The United States is considered to be a federalist system of government because:
the executive branch distributes power to many different bureaucratic offices.
there's a separation of powers between the executive, legislative, and judicial branches.
the Constitution allows each state complete freedom to determine its internal form of government.
early political leaders such as James Madison called themselves Federalists.
national and state governments each have power in specific areas of government activity.
--
It's either B and D and I'm not sure which.
No, it's E, the last one. We were a confederation (just a collection of independent states with mutual interests) until the current constitution allowed an overriding federal government. That made it a "federation."
The Scots-Irish descended farmers in the southeast realized their fears about the federation when English descended bankers and merchants in the northeast controlling the federal government bled them with punishing tariffs on their trade with Europe. That's why they seceded and returned to a confederation. The northern merchant controlled federal military prepared to blockade their ports and that started our Civil War.
The English in the north used the flood of potato famine Catholic Irish in the north as cannon fodder against the Catholic Irish's old homeland enemy (and still recently), the Protestant Scots-Irish. It all worked out well for the merchants in the North, but both Irish cultures were prominent among the great numbers of all the cultures slaughtered wholesale: tens of thousands per battle, sometimes per day.
That's what really happened and it was hidden from us when I went to school. I am a devoted true liberal free market capitalist, but when bast**rd scum among capitalists pull crap like that I have a hard time defending them against the Marxists.
PS: Those aren't "free market" capitalists. They're government-aided dominate the market capitalists. When free-trader competitors race ahead of them, they use government to beat them down.
