Elvis tried something different in his final narrative movie
but the results are oddly similar to his usual '60s formula. Here the King plays a doctor working in an inner-city free clinic, playing host to three Catholic nurses (who are really nuns incognito). Elvis gets hung up on one of the nuns, played by Mary Tyler Moore; she seems a lot closer to The Dick Van Dyke Show than the Vatican. The songs are sparse--"Rubberneckin'" gets a workout in one of those awful stilted hootenannies so prevalent in Elvis pictures. The flower-power ambience is more interesting than the story; the film features Mod Squad-style attempts at racial politics, a sit-down protest, and a weird sequence involving "rage reduction" to cure an autistic child. Elvis has good scenes and indifferent ones, but he looks fantastic (this is just after the great "comeback"), and he dresses like no other doctor before or since. --Robert Horton
An offbeat role for Elvis Presley (his final film) finds him as a doctor practicing in a ghetto clinic who falls for co-worker Mary Tyler Moore...unaware that she's actually a nun. With Barbara McNair, Ed Asner. Songs include "Rubberneckin'," "Let Us Pray," and the title tune. 93 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: Spanish, French; theatrical trailer; biographies.

Themes of faith, family, love, and patience reverberate through the soundtrack to celebrated director/ playwright/ actor Tyler Perry's film Daddy's Little Girls. It's a typically excellent album from start to finish; even the songs that don't appear in the film and were "inspired by" it actually for once do sound inspired by it, and seem in fact to have been written specifically for the movie. The record has gained some notoriety for including a song called "Family First," the first-ever recording by the Houston Family, pairing Whitney Houston with her mother Cissy, daughter Kristina, and her cousin Dionne (Warwick, that is). It's a joy to hear Whitney back in (almost) top form, though the soundtrack's best moment belongs to another collaboration, the remix of Anthony Hamilton's emotionally charged "Struggle No More" by Jaheim with Musiq Soulchild. Charles Moore's cover of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" wins points just for trying, and for not swathing the tune in modern production, but it can't help but fall short. Contributions by R. Kelly, Yolanda Adams, and Governor are reasons enough to own this moving collection. --Mike McGonigal

"Most people have everything they need to be happy." The words latched onto some part of Skyla's brain. She repeated the phrase to herself while she rang up books and stocked shelves. It had a certain resonance to it, but she doubted it was true. Free-spirit Skyla Plinka has found the love and stability she always wanted in her reliable husband Thomas. Settling into her new family and roles as wife and mother, life in rural Wisconsin is satisfying, but can't seem to quell Skyla's growing sense of restlessness. Her only reprieve is her growing friendship with neighbor Roxanne, who has five kids (and counting) and a life in constant disarray - but also a life filled with laughter and love. Much to the dismay of her intrusive mother-in-law, Audrey, Skyla takes a part-time job at the local bookstore and slowly begins to rediscover her voice, independence and confidence. Throughout one pivotal year in the life of Skyla, Audrey and Roxanne, all three very different women will learn what it means to love unconditionally. With the storytelling ingenuity of Anne Tyler, the writing talent of Jodi Picoult, and the subtlty of Alice Munro, McQuestion offers a satisfying debut that proves she is a gifted portraitist, a natural storyteller and an author to watch.

Amazon Exclusive: Carolyn Parkhurst Reviews A Scattered Life Carolyn Parkhurst is the author of the bestselling novels The Dogs of Babel and Lost and Found, and recently published the acclaimed novel The Nobodies Album. She lives in Washington, D.C., with her husband and their two children. Read her exclusive guest review of Karen McQuestion's A Scattered Life: A Scattered Life is the kind of novel youâll want to recommend to a friend without quite knowing how: as soon as you begin to say what the book is "about," all of the possible descriptions seem either too small or too big for the story contained in those pages. You might say, "Itâs about friendship and family dynamics and the unexpected ways our actions influence the trajectories of other peopleâs lives." Or "Itâs about a woman whoâs doing her best to make the life she has into the life she wants to live." And itâs your 7th grade book report on The Red Pony all over again: your description isnât inaccurate, but it doesnât come close to conveying the bookâs gravity and substance, the particular pleasure you get from immersing yourself in this novel, as opposed to any other. So you might try getting more specific: "Okay, the main character is a woman named Skyla Plinka. Sheâs married and lives in the suburbs and has a little girl, and her life is all very ordered and predictable, which she likes, because her childhood was tough and sheâs always craved stability. She clashes a little bit with her mother-in-law, Audrey, who has different ideas about how a wife and mother should run her home and who would like to be more involved in her life than Skyla is comfortable with. But then a new family moves in next door, and Skyla strikes up a friendship with her new neighbor Roxanne, whoâs brash and charismatic and has five kids and just loves living in the kind of messy chaos that they create..." And you realize youâve gone too far in the other direction, zooming in on the details of an individual tree, while ignoring the vastness and beauty of the forest. So hereâs how Iâm going to recommend A Scattered Life: From the very first sentence--"Skylaâs earliest memory of Thomas was linked with the smell of beer and the taste of blood"--Karen McQuestion had me right where she wanted me. Right away, I was there with Skyla, curious about who she was and what choices sheâd made, and ready to live her life for a while, instead of my own. McQuestion has a talent for creating characters who are layered and subtle, flawed and ordinary and exceptional, in the way we all are. The book alternates between the viewpoints of the three women--Skyla, Roxanne and Audrey--and their incomplete and refracted perspectives come together to form a narrative thatâs fuller and more complex than the story any one of them might tell on her own. McQuestion writes with a sharp eye and a sure voice, and as a reader, I was willing to go wherever she wanted to take me. After I finished the book, I thought about how I might describe it to a friend, and I settled on a phrase that says a lot without saying very much at all. Itâs the way these conversations usually end: "You should read this. Itâs good." --Carolyn Parkhurst

Acting And Writing Make Bones So Popular.. Www.dvdshop88.com
There is more to the mix. Bones is a sexed-up variation of all the CSIs. What makes these programs about anal swabs, toenail clippings, and poisoned nipples so popular, in spite of David Caruso's self-righteousness, portentousness, and semaphoric shades? Acting and writing, yes. But also work. We like to see people do something besides insult their family members. In Las Vegas, Miami, and New York, as at the Jeffersonian research laboratory in Washington, D.C., professionals play well with one another, and their sandbox is a functioning collective. It's not just expertise that appeals; it's collegiality, group dynamics, and morale. For the same reason in the earlier days of television we welcomed sitcoms that got out of the house. Mary Tyler Moore's TV newsroom, like Alan Alda's M*A*S*H unit, was more interesting and somehow more textured than the den at home where we sat, at once hollow and besieged. Add to this sense of inside info and shared endeavor the Technicolored elegance and obscene magnifications of sneaky medical machines that can see through bones, hear blisters, snapshoot ghosts, and fingerprint regret—the Peeping Tomism of the camera and the lab—and what we get is omniscience, when we aren't grossed out.
The TV drama show Bones has been a very popular series for the Fox Network for the last two years, and for good reason. It combines interesting crime drama with enjoyable characters and personal situations. The series revolves around Temperance Brennan, a forensic anthropologist, who is able to identify and determine cause of death by examining the bones of victims. The main character is straight from a series of novels by Kathy Reichs, who is also a forensic anthropologist.I originally started watching Bones when it first premiered because David Boreanaz was playing a major role in the series, and I desperately miss Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. However, I was pleasantly surprised that the plots and other actors made this show worth watching for its own merits. The character of Temperance Brennan is extremely smart, aggressive, and tough which is part of why I like Bones. I would certainly recommend the TV show Bones to anyone who likes crime dramas and I have equally positive feelings about Reichs' Break No Bones.

Moore leads ‘Dogs to Mid-State title
Taylor Moore made sure the Mid-State Conference title made its way back to Edmond on Monday afternoon. The Memorial sophomore finished first with a six-under 134 and helped Memorial hold off Norman North for the conference crown at Belmar Golf Course in Norman. “That wind was howling today and I was very excited with the way they played,” Memorial coach Scott MacDonald said. The Bulldogs ...
