I absolutely hate this new vampire craze. Twilight is obscene in its cheesery, True Blood is rife with bad acting, and attempts to cash in on the craze with more mature offerings are taken as a personal insult. Having recently seen both the original Swedish film, Let The Right One In, along with the new release, Let Me In, I very seriously doubt any other piece of work in the vampire genre can top either.

Starring Chloe Moretz of Kick Ass fame as Abby, the 12 year old vampire, and Kodi Smit-McPhee as the bullied to the brink Owen, the film takes care to develop these characters and their situations in a much more satisfying manner than the original. Owen is presented as a darker than usual 12 year old, brandishing a knife, mask, and peeping tom telescope within the first 5 minutes of the film. I felt both sorry for him, and scared of him at the same time. Throughout the film, Abby seems much more innocent than Owen, and both actors deliver performances that blow their Swedish counterparts completely out of the water.

Several positive changes have been implemented since the original film. Tensions are heightened by the inclusion of 'The Policman', played by Elias Koteas, who is constantly on the blood trail of Abby and her father, played by Richard Jenkins. Owen lives with his single mother, and the relationship with his father is far more distant and strained than what was portrayed in the original, but this is for the better. Owen is the victim of several school bullies who take their torment to an appalling level, and it becomes clear why Owen seems so disturbed throughout the beginning of the film.

Owen and Abby first meet at the playground in their apartment complex, and right off the bat Owen knows there is something strange about her. She is constantly going about barefoot in the snow, and makes strange comments regarding their relationship. This is more a coming of age love story than it is a horror film, so don't go in with the wrong expectations.

The best scenes of the film lie with the Father and his nightly endeavors to provide Abby with the blood she requires, without the mess she would leave if left to her own devices. The Father will fail in his quest for blood more often than not, and Abby is forced to hunt for herself on several occasions. These attacks are absolutely brutal. I think this sort of brutality adds substantially to the audience's impression of Abby. The original films attacks were much more tame, and this was likely a product of technical limitation. Speaking of technical limitation, the CGI used to execute these scenes is beyond horrible. We are talking I Am Legend level, and they can get somewhat laughable at times. All in all the CGI scenes give and take, providing an extra dimension to Abby at the cost of photo realism.

When viewed as a whole, Let Me In is more satisfying in both plot and characters than the original film. Both films were written by Swedish writer John Ajvide Lindqvist, but Let Me In just feels fully fleshed out with a more structured narrative. If you are sick and tired of all these cheap and cheesy vampire ventures, do yourself a favor this week and go check out Let Me In
