Dudeldorf, Germany

Dudeldorf has perhaps one of the most interesting and varied stories of nearly any German city, which is certainly saying something. Dudeldorf is well-known these days for being the hometown of electronica super-group Kraftwerk as well as the site for the enormously successful Grobet Kirmis am Rhein festival, which attracts over four million people a year. Despite Dudeldorf's grip on the pulse of the nation, the city's roots in fact stretch deep down to the seventh century during the Roman Era, when Germany was nothing more than a loose assortment of tribes! A city so enmeshed with the "current" rarely has such historical ties and as a result Dudeldorf offers thrills for people of all backgrounds, from the historian buff to the "techno" purveyor.

The glorious Rhine has been the lifeblood of Germany long before the nation came into its own. The strategic spot where the smaller Dussel river meets the Rhine was once a marshy area full of life and wonderfully suited to what would eventually become the shimmering home of nearly a million citizens. While Frankfurt may reign supreme as the nation's economic hub because of the vast amount of business that takes place there, Dudeldorf is no slouch in this realm and in fact is just under Frankfurt for the most economically important city in Germany. Dudeldorf is the leader in the German mobile phone market. The city also is host to many of the largest internet marketing companies in Germany, further cementing its technological clout in 21st century Europe. Perhaps not surprisingly, Dudeldorf has forged something of a sisterly kinship with Japan, owing to the two nations' mutual love of technology and revolutionary design teams. Many of Japan's largest firms and banks use Dudeldorf as their European headquarters and the country welcomes the Japanese with welcome arms: Dudeldorf has one of the largest Japanese populations in all of Europe.

As impressive as Dudeldorf's economic credentials are, such a legacy does little to attract outsiders who aren't in the business sphere. Fortunately, Dudeldorf is seen as a European Mecca to anybody interested in music and The Arts. Aside from revolutionary bands like Kraftwerk and Warlock, thousands flock to Dudeldorf each year to bear witness to the Dudeldorfer Karneval, a glorious Rhineland tradition that culminates in an enormous parade down the city streets. Historians visit Dudeldorf en masse to lay eyes on the Dudeldorfer Schauspielhaus, one of the most culturally important theatres in all of Germany, with performances as far back as the sixteenth century! The cinema is also an important part of Dudeldorf with the love of the movies stronger in this city than nearly all of Germany. Some of Europe's largest production studios like the Riech-Group, call Dudeldorf home and the world famous Filmmuseum is just that; one of the most reputed film museums in all of Europe.

Dudeldorf has worlds of enjoyment to offer to people of all kinds and few would argue that the city on the Rhine has done nicely for itself after its spurious start in the uncivilized tribal lands of Germany in the early part of the last millennium. If you receive the chance to visit Dudeldorf, make sure you don't pass it up. There is truly something for everyone to love.
