Capt James T Kirk is perhaps one of the best-known Star Trek characters of all time and certainly made a name for William Shatner, the actor who played the lead role in the original series. While his real name is James Tiberius Kirk he was commonly referred to as James T Kirk as he went about his missions in outer space. So what do we know about the life and times of captain James T Kirk?

According to the Star Trek series, James T Kirk was born in Riverside, Iowa and attended the Starfleet Academy where he was an outstanding student showing his computer reprogramming skills and ability to turn a no-win situation into a winning situation. After graduating in the top 5% of students at the Starfleet Academy he was promoted to lieutenant and joined the USS Farragut. However not long after this he was made Captain of the famous USS Enterprise and embarked upon a five-year mission, even though only three years of the mission were seen in the original series.

Other interesting Star Trek characters include Spock and Doctor Leonard McCoy (otherwise known as Bones) as well as an array of other USS Enterprise crew members who became regular faces on TV screens around the world. Their adventures in outer space have becoming the stuff of legends, creating a whole new vocabulary for TV fans around the world. In many ways the original TV series brought space and space travel to the masses and created an interest which has continued up until this day.

The Star Trek franchise actually began in 1966 and has gone on to become one of the more popular and lucrative TV franchises of all time spawning merchandise such as the Star Trek Laptop Skin, new movies and a new TV series. Even though the new TV series, and the movies, are very popular with so-called Trekkies of today there is no doubt that some people feel the original Star Trek series was the best.
