The exhaustion turned to exhilaration when the foal finally traded its dark warm shelter of the last 11 months for the subtle lights of the foaling stall. The mare, Merry Heart, was exhausted, as was I. When the diminutive jet black filly with a perfect heart on her forehead struggled to her feet, my beautiful mare immediately found the strength to raise herself from the straw. She proceeded to gently nuzzle and lick the foal until she greedily started eating. I breathed a sigh of relief. This foal, I knew, would be the future of my breeding program here at my new Florida horse farm. A co ownership with a local dressage trainer had been in place since the breeding.

A dream was finally realized. A dream I had since childhood; to breed, raise and train my own hunter jumpers. This was a miracle in more ways than one. I fully realized how blessed I had become. The sun was just peeking over the yellow and orange salmon colored clouds when I realized I had been up for more than 26 hours. Funny, but I wasn't a bit tired.

My stallion, Blazing Light, was running back & forth in his pasture enjoying the cool crisp morning air of the mild Florida winter. His magnificent coal black coat was shining while the last remnants of the early morning dew flew off his mane like drops of crystal. I remembered him running through four feet of snow only the year before. I was so grateful that he would soon be warmed by the Florida sun as age was creeping up on him.

Horses in Florida in the sun in the dead of winter. I never would have believed my good fortune a short few years ago. I was finally able to purchase this magnificent animal due to a neighbor's health situation. Finding the Florida horse farm for sale was a stroke of luck.

One day, trudging through the snow and driving sleet from the barn to the house, I found myself totally exasperated with the severe winter weather. I knew I had to make a change.

I was sharing my feelings with my girlfriend who was searching the Craigslist category horses for sale in Florida. She was looking for a hunter with which she could compete in HITS in Ocala. She came across an ad reading "North Central Florida Horse Farm for sale."

It sounded too good to be true. Thirty beautiful, quiet and secluded acres out in the country but still close to shopping and a school for my daughter, who was entering her first year of dressage competition. As an extra bonus, the farm for sale was 5 minutes from the Canterbury Equestrian Showplace, where many dressage trials are held.

I knew she would be bounding out of the house any minute in anticipation of the glorious event which had unfolded in the previous hours before dawn. My husband had left earlier for his job at Santa Fe Community College, a short commute of twenty minutes. How happy he was not to be making the forty five minute drive to the University of Minnesota through ice and snow.

Finding my dream Florida Horse farm was purely accidental as are many of the blessings we receive throughout our lives. The previous owners had recently changed directions in their life and were offering the 30-acre farm for sale at a great price. It's country location and its close proximity to town, schools and shopping were certainly appealing. When I saw and the gorgeous Live Oak trees draped with Spanish moss I was won over immediately.

I'm sure I will not make a fortune but the deposit on the filly and the $8,000 balance due will definitely make things easier. I know I have many days of hard work ahead and I accept the challenge with open arms.

As I walk to the house, my mind is filled with new plans and ideas. I smile as the warm sun caresses my back. The exhaustion returns but I realize it was all worth the effort. My dressage classes start soon and I have the maximum six students signed up. It is so nice not to need an indoor arena. I am finally exactly where I want to be. My future is as bright as the eyes of the beautiful new filly who will be an integral part of my new life and work here in the "Sunshine State"
