The Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum – Theatre in a Lush Outdoor Setting

Visitors of The Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum will be exposed to a diverse range of theatrical performances from Shakespeare, folk music to the modern playwrights. Started in 1950 by a blacklisted actor named Will Geer in the McCarthy era, this theatre was initially serving the blacklisted actors and folk singers. Audiences during this time gathered to free workshop performances of Shakespeare, concerts and folk plays which feature popular artists as Pete Seeger, Arlo Gutherie, Della Reese and Burl Ives. This open air theatre found near Santa Monica, California was named after the English botanist John Parkinson's herbal, Theatrum Botanicum.

The excellently crafted amphitheatre is located out of the hill side and the garden with 1000 plants mentioned in the works of Shakespeare is named as memorial Shakespeare garden while in a corner of this garden Will’s ashes are buried. After the death of Will Geer, his beloved family took care of the theatre and currently it is maintained under Herta Ware and Ellen Geer.

Today this summer theatre produces four plays for a season and hosts educational programmes for children and adults. These school programs consist of a field trip to the outdoor theatre, and workshops of theatrical techniques and games followed by Shakespeare or American history play and finally by a question and answer session with the actors. Further to this, classics and modern plays are performed at the newly refurbished 300 seat outdoor amphitheatre.

Watching Shakespearean play in an open air surrounded by trees is something that no one would ever want to miss. What Are Some Good Books on Directing Theatre?

As an aspiring director, I like to involve myself in my school's theatre program and other program's as much as I can, and I also like to educate myself about the profession. Are there any books you could suggest that would give a good insight and tips for being a director? I'd like to read some.

You should be familiar with some acting techniques. Some good books have been written by Sanford Meisner, Uta Hagan, Constantin Stanislavski, and many other method actors. As far as directing goes, you have to be versed in every aspect of theatre. You need to know lights, sound, scenic design, costuming, and, on top of it all, how to act and direct.

A good book to look at is "Play Directing: Analysis, Communication, and Style" by Francis Hodge and Michael McLain. Another good book to look at is "The Director's Voice" by Arthur Bartow. It's a collection of interviews with well established and famous directors.
