On May 3, 1960, a chamber-sized variation on Romeo and Juliet by composer Harvey Schmidt and writer-lyricist Tom Jones opened off-off-Broadway at the Sullivan Street Playhouse. On May 3, 2000, The Fantasticks opened again at the Sullivan Street Playhouse, celebrating 40 continuous years of performances and having long since become the longest-running musical in the history of the world. And while many cast members have come and gone, it's the original cast recording that has become an indelible part of our memory, from the dual pianos dotting the overture and Jerry Orbach's rich reading of "Try to Remember" to the fathers' lament "Never Say No" and the gorgeous duet "Soon It's Gonna Rain." Even better, this anniversary edition CD benefits from remastered sound (you can now hear the harp strum in the opening bars) and a new booklet that includes a note from Jones, an introductory essay, and (drumroll, please) full lyrics. Yes, it's still true that the voices may not have the sheer beauty some modern ears might expect, and the pit band (augmented from two players to five for this recording) sounds a bit dated, but who cares? It's The Fantasticks, an essential piece of musical theater history. Long may it run. --David Horiuchi

Kiss Me, Kate
List Price: $24.99

Cole Porter's masterwork Kiss Me, Kate was revived in a splashy production that played on Broadway in 1999 then in London, where this version was filmed in front of a live audience in 2002. Broadway veterans Brent Barrett and Rachel York play pompous Fred Graham and feisty Lilli Vanessi, respectively, the couple whose roles in Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew mirror their offstage feud. The play-within-a-play format is reflected in a score that has both contemporary '50s songs ("Too Darn Hot") and Bard-inspired stage songs ("I've Come to Wive It Wealthily in Padua"). Other songs such as "Wunderbar," "So in Love," "Why Can't You Behave?," "Always True to You (In My Fashion)," and "Brush Up Your Shakespeare" are among Porter's best-loved melodies and wittiest lyrics. Nancy Anderson and Michael Berresse (the lone principal still remaining from the Broadway revival cast) sing and dance up a storm as the secondary couple Lois and Bill, and Teddy Kempner and Jack Chissick steal scenes as the gangsters. Recommended for fans of musicals, though it's not the most family-friendly choice due to gender conflicts and stereotyping. --David Horiuchi

Jane Austen's classic novel of 1813, Pride and Prejudice, still wins the hearts of countless schoolgirls with its romantic story of Elizabeth Bennet and her Mr. Darcy. Now, the 1996 BBC miniseries is winning over adults, with its faithful adaptation, gorgeous scenery, and superb acting. The essence of the story is the antagonism between Mr. Darcy, a wealthy single man who believes Elizabeth to be beneath him, and Elizabeth, who upon being insulted at a dance by the aloof Darcy refuses to associate with him in any manner. Austen evokes incredible tension with the wit and flirtation of the two characters, and director Simon Langton (who also directed Upstairs Downstairs) successfully translates the repartee and conflict in this six-hour miniseries. Dialogue, for the most part, is painstakingly replicated, except when fleshing out and smoothing for modern sensibilities was necessary. Darcy, for instance, is drawn out, giving his personality significantly more depth. The acting sweeps you away to Regency England: Jennifer Ehle (of Wilde) is convincing as the obstinate Elizabeth, who, despite her mother's attempts to marry her off, spurs the attentions of Darcy. And Colin Firth (of The English Patient) will have women everywhere longing for a Mr. Darcy of their own. For those who have been on an Austen binge--enjoying such excellent adaptations as Sense and Sensibility and Persuasion--this miniseries will round out the ultimate Austen video library. For those new to these romantic period pieces, this version of Pride and Prejudice will have you hooked and longing for more. One caveat, however: plan to watch it in an entire day, because very few have the self-control to not watch all six hours in a single sitting. --Jenny Brown Beyond Pride and Prejudice So you'd like to... Hailed as "the best Austen of all" by The New York Times and deemed "one of the best things ever done for television anywhere" by Sneak Previews, this brilliant adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel is A&E's most popular title ever. Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth (Shakespeare in Love) star in this Emmy-winning production.

Ah, Shakespeare. The great bard. You've heard he's a terrific writer. One of these days, you may actually get around to catching one of his plays. Yeah, right. Well, with the help of the Reduced Shakespeare Company, not only can you catch all of Shakespeare's plays at once, but you can have a riotous good time doing so. Three men performing 37 plays in less than two hours may seem a bit of a stretch. But Adam Long, Reed Martin, and Austin Tichenor--all members of the Reduced Shakespeare Company--pull it off beautifully with The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), a slapstick show that summarizes the playwright's stage work (with the sonnets thrown in). Never read Titus Andronicus? No problem; it's presented here as a cooking show. Can't keep your Shakespearean histories straight? Visualize them as a football game. Wondering what exactly is the deal with that guy Othello? Hear his story as a rap song. Hard as it is to imagine, this video of the stage show (originally seen on PBS) is one of the funniest, most clever productions around. Long is hysterical in his roles of Juliet and Ophelia (among others), bringing a hip, edgy feel to the plays while remaining surprisingly true to the stories. Martin and Tichenor will amaze with their acrobatic movements and frequent costume changes, and the three together are a marvel of timing and rhythm. Best of all, whether you know Shakespeare inside out or have yet to read a word of him, The Complete Works will have you in stitches. --Jenny Brown

Nancy Drew: The Final Scene
List Price: $9.99
Sale Price: $8.52
|
|
|
Pop The Final Scene into your CD-ROM drive, fire it up, and you're greeted with the most gripping opening sequence yet in a Nancy Drew game. As the ageless, mystery-cracking heroine yourself, you accompany your friend Maya to an historical--yet dilapidated--theater to interview teen heartthrob Brady Armstrong for the opening of his new movie. As Maya disappears into the dressing room for the interview, you hear a scream, but when you charge in to investigate Maya is nowhere to be found. The question is, do you have what it takes to track down Maya's kidnapper before the theater is demolished? The most notable improvement in the game comes in the form of the distinctive characters. With each game, the script and character work get better and better. The dialog has a nice youthfulness and sense of humor missing from the previous games. We also loved the choice of the old theater for a setting and the magic theme running throughout, but wished there were more nooks and crannies to explore. Additionally, we had some installations troubles, but Her Interactive assures us that those problems have been resolved, so all current versions should be fine. A minor nitpick is that the timeframe seemed somewhat limiting. Previous Nancy Drew games had an open feel, there was no sense of urgency, and you solved the mystery in your own time. In The Final Scene, the gameplay is divided into three days, and you must accomplish specific tasks before you can move on to the next day. Though this structure lent itself well to the game's plot, it was also easy to get stuck on one clue. However, you can always consult the message boards at Her Interactive's Web site for help, clues, hints, and general support from an enthusiastic community of Nancy Drew lovers. Little grumblings aside, The Final Scene really is a fabulous game that goes above and beyond most games out there right now, and is highly recommended for kids and adults alike. (Ages 10 and older) --Ara Jane Olufson
Nancy travels to St. Louis to visit her old friend Maya and attend the premiere of a new blockbuster movie at the Royal Palladium Theater. Nancy must juggle her efforts between searching for her friend, proving to the police that Maya is really in the theater, and finding a way to stop the demolition. It's not long before Nancy begins to unravel the tangled history of the theater's ownership, a web of secret deals and betrayals surrounding Harry Houdini, the world's greatest escape artist. Will this information help Nancy save the day? Can Nancy afford to gamble with time when her friend's days are numbered? Play the game and find out. Use your best detective skills to explore this once grand theater in a frantic quest for clues, secret passageways, hidden rooms--anything that will help you find your friend. Her life depends on it. The Waiting Room
|
|
|
This is an End Times Stage-play depicting five strangers who had shared one specific location for only a brief moment in their earthly lives. They wake up in a Waiting Room with no idea as to how they got there and where they are.Like a puzzle, the pieces begin to come together when characters begin to see and interact with people from their past who had died. The shock is even more compounded when a Messenger comes on with a bible and tells them they are waiting to meet with Jesus. The theme of the play is that Jesus is the one and only way to heaven and that we must accept him by faith through His grace towards us. Also to know that there are many false doctrines that we cannot give heed to. One theme is that just because you have accepted Jesus at some point in your life, does not secure your place in heaven. There is more to salvation and repentance than having fire insurance.

When it was first produced in 1959, A Raisin in the Sun was awarded the New York Drama Critics Circle Award and hailed as a watershed in American drama. Not only was it a pioneering work by an African-American playwright - Lorraine Hansberry's play was also a radically new representation of black life, one that was resolutely authentic, fiercely unsentimental, and unflinching in its vision of what happens to people whose dreams are constantly deferred. In her portrait of an embattled Chicago family, Hansberry anticipated issues that range from generational clashes to the civil rights and women's movements. She also posed the essential questions - about identity, justice, and moral responsibility - at the heart of these great struggles. The result is a work that captivated audiences from every walk of life and has become a classic of American letters.

Here are some more information for Theater Script:

You want to become an actor, or perhaps you want to become a BETTER actor, right?
How to go about choosing the best class at the best acting school... for you? What's the best way to investigate?
Let me share a bit of my personal experience in order to help you with this all-important step in your journey.
Many years ago, an ad in the NYC Village Voice caught my attention and made my heart jump. The aesthetics of this black and white ad, the name of the acting studio and the look of the print called me to learn more about it. I climbed the stairs to a studio on west 14th st. in Manhattan, to what I imagined a garret in Paris might look like; and in that instant my life changed...forever!
Bringing this into the present, we have many more acting schools, acting studios and acting techniques available than I had when I began. And although the variety is far greater and there are more modes of research available, the way to choose is the same; It is to trust what captivates you, feels right, grabs you, speaks to you, lights you up.
To help demystify some of the current techniques I will use a few abbreviated excerpts from a chapter taken from my acting book "Transformational Acting".
Some Theatre History and Current Methods:
By the early 1900's when the great Russian director and teacher Konstantin Stanislavsky developed the system that was to become Method Acting, he took acting to an entirely new dimension.
Prior to this, Representational Acting was taught, as how to imitate and master certain physical and vocal abilities.
The then-new field of psychology was leading to a new understanding of human behavior and he built on this, teaching the concept of sense memory to attain emotional truth. This gave actors the tools to mine the depth of his character by delving into and recreating his own past emotions. His method also included using the magic "IF" to stimulate the actor's imagination. The actor would say IF I went to a royal wedding I would wear...This exercise puts an actor into the circumstances of the script. Also included were fourth wall, objectives, concentration exercises and thru-line.
It is said that Stella Adler having visited Stanislavsky announced that he was minimizing the importance of sense memory. Adler's technique focused on script analysis, actions and character and imagination.
By then Sense Memory was taken up by Lee Strasberg, which along with relaxation exercises and lee's insightful critiques formed the basis of The Method taught at the famous Actors Studio.
Another great force was Sanford Meisner who updated the prevailing methods with his Repetition exercises, use of activity, and utilizing exercises for the first year of a two-year program.
And so I evolved my acting technique focusing on the uniqueness of each actor; developing their Authentic Self, defining their Individual Signature, Tapping into their Emotional Body so that they are working in the moment, spontaneously and truthfully and using themselves as the base from which to transform into character. Playing the moments of the script are much easier having already transformed into the character. The technique is very behavioral; the actor's presence is felt. Eventually we add circumstances, thru-line, intention, the arc, time lines and what you're revealing. It is a technique that works for all mediums.
Acting Schools/Studios:
Many of the Acting Studios teach a 2-year program, such as American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Strasberg Institute is still available, as is Stella Adler's school. Studios seem to be more about ongoing development and technique, such as Sande Shurin Acting Studio, where my husband Bruce Levy and I teach my Acting Technique- 'Transformational Acting'- otherwise known as the Shoran Technique. It is here that I develop Actors in class and private coach many notable actors for film, theatre, TV. Part of our class activity is to work on scripts the actors are auditioning for and/or hired for.
Your Choice:
Do your homework; read about the places and Teachers, meet them. Some teach a 1-day intensive as I do where you can have a direct experience working with them. That by far is the best way. Trust your experience. It will take you very far in knowing and choosing and in becoming a great Actor. Come from the heart and let your choice light you up!
If you'd like to enter an ongoing and dynamic conversation about any all topics about becoming a professional actor, please visit us at "Ask Sande" (Click Here). We'd love to hear what your questions and concerns are; and we will answer you!
Sande has coached and directed many notable actors for film, Broadway and television including Anthony Rapp (A BEAUTIFUL MIND with Russell Crowe; RENT- Original Cast and Film), Matthew Modine for his acclaimed role in FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON, Jicky Schnee (THE AFTERLIGHT with Rip Torn; PERESTROIKA with Ally Sheedy, F.Murrey Abraham, & Sam Robards); Daphne Rubin Vega, nominated for a Tony Award for her starring Broadway role as Anna in the Nobel Prize-winning play, ANNA IN THE TROPICS. She has worked with soap star Ty Treadway and NYPD BLUE's Sharon Lawrence, TRUE BLOOD and DEADWOOD's William Sanderson, Broadway's 3-Time-Tony Nominated Casey Nicholaw, and RENT's Adam Pascal. Her many crossovers (from supermodels to actors) include Michelle Hicks (co-star THE SHIELD), Shalom Harlow. Her coaching has even extended to the world of rap music with Method Man.
A Wicked Script Should Leave you With a Heightened Sense of Anticipation
While there are many different types of plays that you can see, all of these have different themes to them. As the patron you will have the chance to choose which of these different plays you want to see. From a variety of comedy to drama to even action type plays there is something for everyone. In these plays the best ones are given a twist to their script. This twist provides a sense of wickedness. The wicked scripts are ones which will leave you with a heightened sense of anticipation.
These scripts will have all of the action and thrills that you crave. In general you are feeling like having which can usually be seen in movies and television shows. You may need to think twice about taking someone whom you are just acquainted to one of these shows which has a wicked script.
The really nice thing about these shows is that the dialogue between the characters is snappy and full of energy. You will be drawn into the show without really knowing it. You should however be prepared for anything to occur as the script of these shows is wicked – in terms of energy - and the action just pours out of them. A wicked script will help you to see just how an ordinary scene can be changed.
The only items that need to be remembered with a wicked script is that as the play is being shown in front of an audience it is best if the level of wickedness is toned down to an acceptable level. In these plays as well as the ordinary ones you will find that people enjoy seeing twists and turns that are not that familiar.
A wicked script that is well written will therefore be acceptable if the play is not one that the will cause the theater patrons to turn away in total horror. Since the plays which are written for audiences with tastes for the dramatic you will find that various scenarios have been given new takes.
All in all you could say that a wicked script has more going for it than your usual one. As the final link this is creative process you will be the recipient of programs which are wonderful. Plays that use a wicked script will help you to see life around you in a different manner. For this reason you may need to take a while to live the play and let your mind absorb all that is being conveyed in the play.
