A lonely Westerner in Nashville, Marty Robbins salved his soul by cutting an album (in one afternoon) of mostly self-composed cowboy ballads. One of them was a four-and-a-half-minute epic, "El Paso," that broke every rule of Top 40 programming to become a No. 1 pop and country hit in 1960. Robbins was arguably the most surefooted and accomplished singer in all country music, and that was never more obvious than on these Western ballads performed to often breathtaking perfection with a very small group and a vocal trio. Other titles include "Big Iron" (also a Top 30 hit), "Running Gun," and Western classics like "Cool Water," "Billy the Kid," and "The Strawberry Roan." Three extra tracks flesh out the 1999 release, including "Saddle Tramp" (the B-side of "Big Iron") and "The Hanging Tree" (title song from the 1959 Gary Cooper Western). --Colin Escott

True Grit [VHS] True Grit [VHS]

A wonderful/rueful running gag in El Dorado involves the Edgar Allan Poe line "Ride, boldly ride" being mangled by toupee-wearer Wayne into "Ride, baldy, ride." Two years later, in True Grit, Wayne put the joke in italics by donning an eyepatch and several inches of girth to play cantankerous territorial marshal Rooster Cogburn. Critics belatedly noticed that he could be a marvelously entertaining actor, and Hollywood finally gave him the Oscar they'd failed to nominate him for in Red River, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, The Quiet Man, The Searchers, et al. But make no mistake: True Grit is a splendid movie, with lovingly textured storytelling and sturdy characters, Henry Hathaway's finest high-country action set-pieces, intoxicatingly ornate frontier language, and a couple of formidable bad guys (Jeff Corey's Tom Cheney and Robert Duvall's "Lucky" Ned Pepper). It's a compliment to say that, from a technical standpoint, the movie could have been made any time in Hathaway's 40-year career, yet its feeling for the reality of violence ceded no ground to The Wild Bunch, released around the same time. Still, the film's most sublime passage falls between bursts of gunplay: Rooster sitting on a hilltop at night recounting his life story, as John Wayne metamorphoses ineluctably into W.C. Fields. --Richard T. Jameson

The Town That Dreaded Sundown (SP mode) The Town That Dreaded Sundown (SP mode)

In the Spring of 1946, five residents of Texarkana were brutally murdered and three brought to near death by a masked madman who eluded capture by the Texas Rangers and a host of other law enforcement agencies. This true-to-life thriller is a dramatization of those five still-unsolved murders which sent local residents into panic and caused their town to become an armed camp at sundown. Charles Pierce, director, also plays the well-intentioned but bumbling police officer assisting the ace sleauth called in to apprehend the killer.

Comanche Moon: The Second Chapter in the Lonesome Dove Saga Comanche Moon: The Second Chapter in the Lonesome Dove Saga
List Price: $14.99
Sale Price: $6.49

Adapted from the novel linking Larry McMurtry's "Lonesome Dove" to "Dead Man's Walk," this miniseries follows Texas Rangers McCrae (Steve Zahn) and Call (Karl Urban) as they return home from a mission to capture a Comanche horse thief, only to discover their love lives in disarray. Reeling from these personal travails, the men are then asked to rescue their kidnapped captain. Elizabeth Banks, Val Kilmer, Rachel Griffiths co-star. 4 3/4 hrs. on two discs. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English, French; behind-the-scenes footage; featurette.

It's billed as "the second chapter in the Lonesome Dove saga," but Comanche Moon is actually a prequel to that much-loved 1989 miniseries. And while there's no doubt that it has some very big boots to fill, this three-part (on two DVDs, including bonus features) production is rarely less than eminently watchable and entertaining. Continuity is a positive factor: Larry McMurtry, who wrote the novel on which it's based, also co-wrote the screenplay, and Lonesome Dove director Simon Wincer returns as well. As for the cast, it's certainly not as star-studded as its predecessor, but Steve Zahn (as Gus McCrae), Karl Urban (Woodrow Call), Linda Cardellini (Clara Allen), and the others manage to suggest the characterizations brought to the screen by Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, and Anjelica Huston, respectively, without mimicking them. Of course, there are new faces on hand as well, principally Val Kilmer (looking a mite chubby, perhaps due to all the scenery he chews in his portrayal of Texas Rangers Captain Inish Scull) and Rachel Griffiths (as Scull's horny wife). As the tale begins in 1858, Call and McCrae, some years away from becoming the cattlemen depicted in Lonesome Dove, are Rangers serving under the educated and eccentric Scull as they work to protect the territory against marauding Comanches, led by the stern, vengeful Buffalo Hump (Wes Studi) and his crazed son, Blue Duck (Adam Beach). When Scull's horse is stolen by one of the Indians, he sets out to retrieve the beast, promoting both Call and McRae to Captain, and the rest of the story revolves primarily around them; in fact, although there's a reasonable amount of action (including the Comanche raid on Austin that opens Part Two), Comanche Moon is much less plot-dependent than character-driven, and it is Call (tough, taciturn, and totally clueless when it comes to the fair sex) and best friend McRae (an open-hearted, self-described jester) who are the most engaging of the bunch as they navigate the deep waters of their work and love lives (McRae with Clara and Call with the prostitute Maggie Tilton, played by Elizabeth Banks). McMurtry and co-writer Diana Ossana's dialogue manages to be at once plain and poetic, colorful and poignant, and regardless of what's actually happening onscreen, the miniseries has a light, often whimsical charm that separates it from most Westerns made for big and small screen alike. Extras include a "making of" featurette and more. --Sam Graham Stills from Comanche Moon (click for larger image) Beyond Comanche Moon Broken Trail 3:10 to Yuma Cat Ballou

The Comancheros The Comancheros
List Price: $14.98
Sale Price: $6.98

First-rate sagebrush action showcasing John Wayne as a Texas Ranger who joins forces with gambler Stuart Whitman to locate the "comancheros," a group of white mercenaries who have teamed with Indians in a guns- and whiskey-smuggling operation. Ina Balin, Nehemiah Persoff, Lee Marvin, Michael Ansara, and Jack Elam also star in the final film of director Michael Curtiz. 107 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 4.0, Spanish Dolby Digital mono, French Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English, Spanish; theatrical trailers; more.

Nobody made a fuss about The Comancheros when it came out, yet it has proved to be among the most enduringly entertaining of John Wayne's later Westerns. The Duke, just beginning to crease and thicken toward Rooster Cogburn proportions, plays a veteran Texas Ranger named Jake Cutter. When we first see him (in a tongue-in-cheek delayed entrance), he's catching up with a New Orleans dandy (Stuart Whitman) who killed a judge's son in a duel just after that gentlemanly practice was banned. Monsieur Paul Regret--or "Mon-sooor," as Jake insists on calling him--is not a bad fellow, let alone a badman, and it only follows that, after the requisite number of misunderstandings, he and Jake will join forces to subdue rampaging Indians and the evil white men behind their uprising. The Comancheros was the last credit for Michael Curtiz, who, ravaged by cancer, ceded much of the direction to Wayne (uncredited) and action specialist Cliff Lyons. With support from Wayne stalwarts James Edward Grant (coscreenplay) and William Clothier (camera), the first of many rousing Elmer Bernstein scores for a Wayne picture, and a big, flavorful cast including Lee Marvin (the once and future Liberty Valance), Nehemiah Persoff, Bruce Cabot, and Guinn "Big Boy" Williams (in his last movie), they made a broad, cheerfully bloodthirsty adventure movie for red-meat-eating audiences of all ages. Even the liberal-pinko Time magazine had to second the salute from leading lady Ina Balin at film's end: "Take care of yourself, Big Jake ... we've sort of gotten used to you." --Richard T. Jameson

Texas Rangers

The National Hockey League (NHL) has been clamoring about one of the Original Six, the New York Rangers. The New York Rangers has been a part of the NHL since 1962. Since then, the Rangers fans have been supporting the team by buying Rangers tickets. The fans, however, are being satisfied with every match they play. The game may be help in the Madison Square Garden or in any other city.

The Rangers ticket sale have been undoubted especially the team has the wins to support it. Since they were formed, the team has won four Stanley Cups. Their Stanley Cup win in 1928 made them the first American franchise to have won the Cup. They also won the 1933 and 1940 Stanley Cup.Their most recent Stanley Cup win was in 1994 when the team was lead by Keenan.

The team, like most teams, did have their off seasons. Between their third and last Stanley Cup win, the team have suffered from a losing streak. Despite this, the fans still continued to show their support for their team. They waited in long queues even in frigid weather just to get their hands on some Rangers tickets and watch their team play. The curse was broken with their fourth Stanley Cup.

The curse idea was formed because the team have been experiencing what seemed to be bad luck for decades. The fans have associated the losing streak to one of the moves the Rangers management have done in 1940. The management desecrated the Cup by burning the mortgage of the Madison Square Garden in the 1940 Stanley Cup. Others have speculated that the curse started when the New York Americans lost its franchise.

The Rangers managed to turn it around. The team was rejuvenated by the changes in the staff and players as well as by the support of their fans. They might not have won the Cup recently, but the Rangers have shown some promise. Fans are now eagerly awaiting the return of the Rangers on the ice and the chance to watch them play. The Fifth Cup is not far from reach of the Rangers now.

Saul Maurphy is a sports lover and is a fan of the New York Rangers. He always secure his Ranger Tickets weeks or months before the game. He also finds it more convenient and faster to buy his Rangers Tickets online.

A Preview of the 2006 Texas Rangers

2005 Overview:

Buck Showalter's 2005 Rangers ended up the season with a disappointing 79-83 record despite having one of the better lineups in baseball.  What made the 2005 season particularly disappointing was the fact the 2004 team ended the season with 89 wins and one of the most impressive home records in baseball. In 2004, the Rangers won 51 home games which ranked 4th overall in the American League, while in 2005 Texas managed only to win 44, ending the season 16 games behind the AL West Angels.

Texas fielded one of the best offensive infields in 2005. 1st baseman Mark Teixeira (.301 43 144) continued to develop his swing, playing in all of the Rangers 162 games in 2005. 2nd baseman Alfonso Soriano (.268 36 104) also proved durable playing in 156 games by finishing 2nd on the team in HRs behind Teixeria. Shortstop Michael Young (.334 24 91), 3rd baseman Hank Blalock (.263 25 92) and outfielders David Dellucci (.251 29 65) and Kevin Mench (.264 25 73) also helped to contribute runs to the potent offensive lineup.

Starting pitcher Kenny Rogers (14-8 3.46) slipped from his 18 wins in 2004 posting a 14 win season to led all starters. Youngster Chris Young (12-7 4.34 showed promise in 2005 appearing in 31 games, while newly acquired starter Chan Ho Park (8-5 5.66) managed to post an 8-3 record before being traded to the Padres in August. Closer Francisco Cordero (3-1 3.39 37 saves) anchored the relief pitching while pitching an impressive 2-0 2.59 with 17 saves after the all star break.

Off Season Moves:

The Rangers had a busy off season losing Rogers via free agency and trading Soriano in a 4-player deal with the Washington Nationals.  Texas also picked up Vicente Padilla (9-12 4.71) from the Phillies in exchange for RHP Ricardo Rodriguez. Soriano was sent to the Nationals for Brad Wilkerson (.248 11 57) while Texas also acquired free agent pitcher Kevin Millwood (9-11 2.86). The Rangers also completed a 6-player deal with the Padres which netted relief pitcher Akinori Otsuka (2-8 3.59) and starter Adam Eaton (11-5 4.57). Pitcher John Wasdin (3-2 4.28) was also resigned via free agency.

2006 Analysis:

New pitching coach Mark Connor has an arsenal of new arms to improve upon the team's 4.97 ERA in 2005. Texas continues to lack any "ace" as Rogers departure will prove difficult to replace. Millwood is a nice acquisition as is Padilla, although both posted sub-500 seasons in 2005. Eaton should fit nicely into the rotation and is a reliable arm. Look for Otsuka to stabilize the bullpen. Retaining the services of relief pitcher John Wasdin was also a wise move. The Rangers will certainly miss Soriano's bat in the lineup and hope Brad Wilkerson can return to his 2004 form when he was able to hit 32 HRS - before the Nationals changed their location to Washington. There are many new faces on the Rangers roster, but a lack of quality starters most likely will land them in the same position as 2005.

what seats are a good view and affordable at The Texas Rangers stadium?

So I plan on going to a Texas Rangers v.s New York Yankees game and I was wondering what seats/tickets were affordable and a good view?

I make a road trip to see the Rangers play every summer. My advice to you would be to go to this website and click on where you would like to be. It shows you a view from that section and it gives you the price of that seat. It all depends on what is affordable for you, personally I like being on the lower deck where you can see everything real well.
