The story of the woman who insisted she was Anastasia, the youngest daughter of the last czar of Russia, is complicated. This 1986 telefilm makes it even more so because it's one of those "fact-based" dramas. Its most annoying invention is Anastasia's romance with a prince who never actually existed. Fiction aside, the first two-thirds of the 210-minute movie are dramatic and captivating. The Romanov family is imprisoned and executed, yet Anastasia reappears years later in Berlin in 1923; Amy Irving becomes the iron-willed yet fragile Anna who battles to be recognized by the remaining Romanovs. Gently paced and beautifully shot and staged, the film only starts to lose steam when Anna comes to New York to make her case in the American press. It takes a bunch of Americans, including Susan Lucci as a stateside Romanov relative, to make the tale seem common. Back in London, Olivia de Havilland is a treasure as the dowager empress who won't recognize Anastasia, although there is much evidence in her favor. The film is a great introduction to the mystery, despite its fiction-augmented recounting of history. After watching the movie, get the book it was largely based on, Anastasia: The Riddle of Anna Anderson by Peter Kurth, for a gripping read that just might make you believe in this princess. --Valerie J. TV Land's Hot in Cleveland plays like a throwback to a different era. Add four sitcom veterans and a bevy of zingers, and the result was a hit. Like The Golden Girls, which featured Betty White, each of the three younger women represents a different type: Wendie Malick (Just Shoot Me) plays vain soap star Victoria, Jane Leeves (Frasier) plays cynical manicurist Joy, and Valerie Bertinelli (One Day at a Time) plays sunny self-help author Melanie. If anything, Malick and Bertinelli are essentially reviving their signature characters, but that just puts them at their best advantage. And instead of one camera (see The Office, etc.), the multi-camera sitcom takes place in front of a live studio audience. In the pilot, the single Los Angeles trio ends up in Cleveland en route to Paris due to plane trouble (only Joy, who gave a son up for adoption, has never been married). With nothing better going on back home, they decide to stay. As it turns out, their house comes with a caretaker: White's tracksuit-sporting widow Elka. It isn't a very believable scenario, but that isn't the intention. Instead, story lines revolve around the hopes and fears of women over 40. Throughout the 10 episodes in the first season, their paramours include such familiar faces as John Schneider, Huey Lewis, Tim Conway, and Carl Reiner (Seinfeld's Wayne Knight also tries to seduce Mel, but with less success). Other guest stars include Hal Linden as Victoria's father, Shirley Knight as Mel's mother, and Joe Jonas as her son. The extras offer three featurettes, a blooper reel, Victoria's Japanese commercial for "lady pants," the original version of the first episode, and the pilot of Retired at 35. Hot in Cleveland may be a throwback, but these funny ladies make that seem like a virtue. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Never before available on home video and unseen on television since 1973, the 1950 production of Annie Get Your Gun has achieved somewhat legendary status, most notably for who would inherit the role Ethel Merman had made famous on Broadway in 1946. MGM originally cast Judy Garland, but her ongoing drug and alcohol problems led to her being fired and replaced by Betty Hutton. Fortunately, the bright and brassy Hutton sparkles in this highly fictionalized story of Annie Oakley, the sharpshooter who wins fame in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and wins the heart of fellow sharpshooter Frank Butler (Howard Keel). Dashing baritone Keel was beginning his career as one of MGM's favorite leading men in the 1950s (including Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Kiss Me, Kate). Together they make gold of the many Irving Berlin hits--"Doin' What Comes Naturally," "Anything You Can Do," "They Say It's Wonderful," "I Got the Sun in the Morning," and the classic anthem "There's No Business Like Show Business." Annie Get Your Gun is unquestionably a product of the 1950s. Keel's relentless chauvinism and Hutton's constant fawning over him grow tiresome (though she does stand up to him in a battle of the sexes), and the Indians wear full headdresses and face paint, say "Ugh," and destroy modern conveniences. (In the name of political correctness, the 1999 Broadway revival starring Bernadette Peters removed "I'm an Indian Too" and received its own share of criticism from purists.) Quibbles aside, the excellent cast and immortal score make Annie Get Your Gun a classic musical. It's great to have it back. --David Horiuchi
