EL NORTE - DVD Movie

The audience for El Norte splits into two factions. There are those who, ever since its 1983 Telluride Film Festival unveiling, have spoken reverently of it as a great film, "a Grapes of Wrath for our time." And then there are those who find it a decent movie deserving of respect as passionate social protest, but seriously compromised by a Filmmaking 101 approach. Hailed as "the first epic" of the independent American cinema, the film focuses on two young Mayan Indians--sister Rosa (Zaide Silvia Gutiérrez) and brother Enrique (David Villalpando)--whose lives are shattered by the Guatemalan civil war. As one says to the other, "The past is gone forever ... you're my whole family now." They flee to Mexico with the ultimate goal of crossing into the United States--"El Norte"--where they hope for a new, secure life. The film aspired to put a face on the "invisible people," the shadow population of undocumented aliens that had become a key, though rarely acknowledged, element of the American economy--and if anything, the movie's relevance has grown more urgent over the ensuing quarter-century. Directed by Gregory Nava, who wrote the screenplay with his wife Anna Thomas, El Norte portrays both the beauty and harshness of Rosa and Enrique's homeland; the low comedy and justifiable paranoia that mark their passage through Mexico, especially Tijuana, a "lost city" where everyone is "temporary"; and the culture shock of encountering America, where "even the poorest people have toilets." The filmmakers were after more than docudrama; their movie reaches for a mystical dimension, weaving imagistic and color motifs from native myth into the visual design, as well as incorporating periodic declarations about life on Earth being only a dream. The problem is that much of this comes off as earnest schematic rather than compelling cinema. The film is most alive in the presences of newcomers Gutiérrez and Villalpando; their actorly gifts are modest but sincere, and the mixture of enthusiasm and trepidation in their performances is genuine (they themselves were "without papers" as they shot their Los Angeles scenes). This is one instance where the DVD extras markedly increase one's appreciation of the film, or more precisely, the fact that it exists at all. That's true less of director Nava's running commentary (which often sounds like a student displaying the note cards for his term paper) than of the accompanying featurette "In the Service of the Shadows: The Making of El Norte." Nava, Thomas, the two lead actors, and set designer David Wasco reminisce about the production, the effort of "a five-person crew in a VW van." Some of the stories are almost as harrowing as the film's most intense passages. These include a night in a remote Mexican village when the locals suddenly took umbrage at the film company's presence and formed into a mob--"anything could have happened, and no one would ever have known"--and a subsequent crisis when authorities seized reels of film and demanded a ransom beyond Nava's ability to pay. Apart from such melodrama-in-real-life, the documentary also impresses with revelations that, just as the Guatemalan sequences had to be shot in the Mexican states of Chiapas and Morelos (the civil war still being in progress), certain "Mexican" locations were convincingly replicated in Newhall, Calif.! "In the Service of the Shadows" is dedicated to El Norte's cinematographer, the late James Glennon (d. 2006), whose resourcefulness is gratefully remembered--shooting by candlelight in a town with no electric lighting--and whose artistry is abundantly apparent in the movie itself. --Richard T. Before CGI, The Incredible Hulk rampaged in our TV sets in the form of a body builder (Lou Ferrigno) painted in green. He moved in slow motion and was having a bad hair day. The Hulk 2008 paid tribute to the TV series through various references that include scenes and character names that fans of the TV series would or should recognize. DVDs of the Hulk TV series are available in case you can't recall any of the scenes.

Here they are in no particular order:

* The Hulk TV series Lonely Man Theme played in the background as Bruce Banner walked in the city streets of Guatemala while holding up his tattered pants.

* Lou Ferrigno cameo as a security guard getting bribed by Banner with a pizza.

* Bill Bixby in a TV show (The Courtship of Eddie's Father) shown at the early scenes when Banner was at his Brazilian apartment. Bill Bixby played Dr. David Banner in the TV series. A slight, but noticeable name change for the Hulk's alter ego.

* Bill Bixby and Ed Norton as Dr David Banner with gamma ray cross hairs on their forehead. The setup is the same as the TV series including the rotating chair and the cross hair on Banner's forehead.

* "You wouldn't like me when I'm hungry." Said in Portuguese by Banner to the thugs in the factory while rescuing Martina played by Débora Nascimento. Acknowledged by Banner as not making sense, the line made famous by Bixby is "Don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry."

* Student named Jack McGee speaking to the news media as a witness to the fight between the soldiers and the green giant. He's the first character in the movie who described Banner's alter ego as "a Hulk." In the TV series, the news reporter who hounded Bixby's Banner is named Jack McGee.

* Close up of Norton's eyes at the initial stage of Hulk transformation. Seen in the factory, Bixby's Banner also goes through the same transformation and close up shots of his eyes were seen by audiences.

* David B. as the recipient's name on the envelope when Banner opened the package revealing Betty Ross's necklace presumably from the pawnshop. David Banner is Bixby's character name. Bruce Banner is Norton's character name. Which, by the way, is the same name in the comic books.

2012 - Official Countdown To December 21 2012

2012 - Official Countdown To December 21 2012

If you have just heard about 2012, you have a lot to learn. The 2012 phenomenon covers a huge amount of information on a wide variety of topics, which appear to be disconnected until you start studying them. The range of prophecies, predictions and situations that have something to do with 2012 include ancient history, astronomy, global cultures, catastrophes and space age technology.

You may have heard some of the Nostradamus prophecy is predicting a great comet to strike Earth when the end of days arrives. Nostradamus seems to have foretold many of the world events surrounding war, dictators and catastrophic disasters both natural and inflicted by man. There are also quatrains written by the ancient seer that tell of water turning to blood and thousands of people dying from disease, fire and war. Which prophecy contains Nostradamus 2012 predictions? Several have been said to be in agreement with Mayan prophecy.

The Mayans are a fascinating people whose culture originates in ancient Guatemala. They are said to be descendents of the Olmecs who arrived here as survivors of the destruction of Atlantis. Regardless of what people the first Mayans descended from, their knowledge of mathematics, astronomy, astrology and time keeping calendars is beyond amazing. The Mayan calendar known as the Long Count is the main source for the date that leads you to want to learn more about 2012. But there are other ancient cultures who have had calendars and knowledge this 2012 end of our age scenario.

From the ancient Sumerians of Babylon, we learn that a planet Niribu is due to return in 2012. NASA says that Nibiru is a hoax, the creation of some lunatic fringe people. There are some astronomy scientists who have reported a mysterious planet being sensed out past Pluto that is referred to as Planet X. Some people are convinced that Planet X was identified with the discovery of the new dwarf planet named Eros. Despite the arguments of those who study our solar system and the universe, the scholars of ancient Sumerian texts and culture say that Nibiru is real, and will return to our solar system as it is prophesied in the original cuneiform tablets left us by the people of Sumer.

No matter who wants to debunk Planet X or Nibiru, there is something of great size causing Pluto to behave erratically. Additionally, an unknown heavenly body of massive proportions has been caught behind the rising sun in photos from around the world. Is it the long awaited missing planet the Sumerian records warn of? Somehow waiting for an affirmative identification makes no sense, once you start really learning the interwoven predictions and prophecies about 2012.

There are those who have alerted us to the possibility of a polar shift or polar reversal in regards to the natural disasters many see as part of the 2012 phenomenon. You certainly can’t say that Earth is not changing. We have a huge increase in earthquakes and tsunamis mixed in with the alarming global warming situation. It appears that global warming is only the fault of the activities of man in a small percentage. It isn’t just the Earth that is heating up. Every planet in our solar system is experiencing a marked rise in planetary temperatures. The major cause is coming from the universe, a force that humans have no control over at all. In fact, events in the universe are causing far more undesirable changes on our planet than just global warming.

Once you have connected the events of the solar system and the universe into the mix of things to make 2012 the phenomenon that it is, aliens and UFO activity presents you with more that you need to know. Some people are emphatic that alien sightings and abductions are something that happens only to the mentally unstable. If this were true, then Japan’s new First Lady would hardly be publicly reporting her trip to Venus in a UFO as part of her experiences during an alien abduction. The number of UFO sightings has grown to a frantic pace over the past few years. Alien abduction reports that have been proven to be factual through psychological testing are also on the rise.

There are those who have made connections between alien and UFO activities being intertwined with the events leading to and through the year 2012. There are figurines and ancient drawings featuring aliens from cultures that lived long ago around the world, including the Sumerians. There are also many instances that UFO crafts appear in fine art and religious buildings around the world.

Learning about 2012 is fascinating and alarming at once. There is no one who wants the world to end, or hopes for humanity to suffer natural catastrophes of proportions man has never known. No one knows for sure what will happen in 2012. Knowing what you should be prepared for if these predicted and prophesied events begin to take place makes far more sense than saying this is all just a bunch of crazy talk. This is huge. To say that nothing at all will happen and do absolutely nothing to learn everything about 2012, could be the biggest mistake you’ll ever make.
