I have the feeling that most men dread the thought of being diagnosed with prostate cancer. I was surprisingly calm getting the news on about my seventieth birthday, after all my father had died from prostate cancer in 1984. The family reckoned he had refused offered treatment because he was eighty two and probably had had enough of our mother by then! But he came from a generation that did not cope with cancer too well. Humour, however sick, can help lighten the worry. Also losing one's inhibitions, as you whip your trousers down before another batch of nurses, can be quite an eye opener as to your frame of mind. My credo has been to work physically twice as hard as before, eat healthily and keep a good sense of humour. Also I am not frightened talking about it to those who enquire and maybe are a little concerned themselves - what is there to hide? You are a survivor and you should want others to be survivors too. My cancer specialist gave me an optimistic thirty years more to annoy people if I did not give in. You can give comfort to those who may be worried they have a prostate problem as I did fairly loudly in the self service restaurant on a cross channel ferry to a thirty two year old police sergeant. The men on the table behind us went talked a bit quieter as though I might have been imparting some valuable information for general consumption.

Most men must be living in either total denial or are hermits if they have not heard of the symptoms or what they should do about them. It is quite simple to give a blood sample and confirm the results one way or the other. Better safe than sorry and the earlier the better. I was living in France at the time and visiting Mont St Michel when the symptoms became very apparent as I started passing a lot of blood. The French Health Service does not hang around. All the necessary confirmatory tests were carried out and an aggressive T4 tumour diagnosed. The surgery was duly carried out and I went into spasms when back in the recovery room, not returning to my ward until 4.30 the next morning and having received four pints of French, or maybe Algerian, blood. I could speak French before and it was not harmed by my experience! I just felt that when I re-joined the choir I belonged to I might get the higher notes a bit more easily.

I got out of hospital ten days later and, first off, had to convince an American friend that I did not need any dressings changed. After I had told her three times she finally said 'oh' and shut up. I then was taken, twice a week, to Caen, some sixty miles away, to the Centre Baclesse, one of the two best cancer hospitals in France, for a five week course of radiotherapy. The ambulance taxi would call for me on time, take me to Caen and wait for me before bringing me home. No stress. That came later when my wife left me eighteen months after the operation. But that is another story. Two melanomas have been surgically removed and I have never felt fitter or more positive about the future. The Americans have a saying for what I have. That is PMA, or Positive Mental Attitude. Many many, men have this prostate, or as some of them say - prostrate, problem and I am sure the survival rate is largely governed by a good dose of PMA. I now have a twelve weekly injection of Zoladex and a daily pill to supress hot flushes - so they said.

Survivor has mapped various spot all over the world, from the island of Borneo, to the land down under, to Africa and to the mountainous Fiji among others. What’s noticeable among these locations is the relatively similar weather environment, which allows the contestants, specifically the female contestants, to bare their physique in bikinis.

But with the future seasons of Survivor, the producers are now reportedly considering taking the competitive reality series to a different plane, probably one that does not involved two-pieces. According to Jeff Probst, host of Survivor, producers are contemplating on setting the show in Northern Canada.

With this consideration, another thing comes into mind. What will be the viewers’ reception of this change of direction? Over the years, Survivor has attained more and more fame and popularity whether because of its complicated challenges, its distinct realism or its diverse contestants.

However, it’s undeniable to say that baring some skin on the show has made the show much appealing and more interesting to watch.

When you think about it, shifting Survivor in a colder climate is also quite interesting to watch, though it does have its share of advantages and drawbacks. The challenges will definitely be more difficult because of the tolerance of the body to the cold weather. And bikinis would certainly be more alluring than parkas, hats and boots. On the other hand, it would be nice to see contenders actually survive a more complex environment.

As of the moment, there are no other details regarding the considered location. But one thing is sure, only American contestants can participate on the popular game show produced by Mark Burnett.
