Essential Gary Stewart

In an age when barroom-'n'-cheatin' songs hit country radio program directors' wastebaskets quicker than you can say "Foolin' Around," it's good to remember Gary Stewart. The Kentucky native kicked around for years before breaking big in 1975 with the likes of "Drinkin' Thing," "Out of Hand," and "She's Actin' Single (I'm Drinkin' Doubles)." If anything, those hard-driving plaints were soon eclipsed by the rocking "Your Place or Mine (I Really Don't Care)" and "Ten Years of This" (a bitter soliloquy delivered by a man to his wife on the occasion of their wedding anniversary)--two cuts on which Stewart gives Jerry Lee Lewis himself a run for his money in terms of unhinged vocal artistry. Essential captures all these and more on a generous CD that matches Gram Parsons, if not Hank Williams, for abandon and dark emotional intensity. --Rickey Wright

Les Miserables - The Dream Cast in Concert
List Price: $27.95
Sale Price: $54.44

The 10th anniversary concert video of the international musical sensation Les Misérables might be the best thing to appease fans until a full-fledged movie comes along. Or it might be even better, as feature films are often subject to extramusical casting considerations and this 1995 dream cast is superb. Reprising their roles from the original London company are Colm Wilkinson (Valjean), Michael Ball (Marius), and Alun Armstrong (Thenardier). From Broadway come Judy Kuhn (Cosette), Lea Salonga (Eponine), and Michael Maguire (Enjolras); from a later London production comes Ruthie Henshall (Fantine); and from Australia comes Philip Quast (Javert). Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg's score vividly captures the passion of Victor Hugo's epic tale of post-Revolutionary France, combining tear-jerking ballads ("I Dreamed a Dream," "Bring Him Home") and rousing anthems ("Do You Hear the People Sing"). The format of this concert is closer to that of a dramatic cantata rather than a fully staged production; the singers stand at their microphone stands with an orchestra and chorus behind them, but they do wear costumes and participate in some movement. At certain points such as the climax of the barricade scene, the video switches to action from a stage production. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra sounds great, and it can be thrilling when 200 choristers (dressed in logo T-shirts) rise to their feet for a full-company number such as "One Day More." Also, subtitles provide date and scene information and help move the story along. The 147-minute video contains footage not seen when Les Mis was a PBS pledge-drive staple, most notably the encore in which a progression of 17 actors who have played Valjean around the world share "Do You Hear the People Sing?" Each sings a line in his native language, a testament to the enduring power of this show to audiences everywhere. --David Horiuchi

Anyone who fantasizes about becoming a porn star should see Porn Star: The Legend of Ron Jeremy, a cheerful documentary that paints a sympathetic but clear-eyed portrait of the most successful male porn star of all time. Through remarkably frank interviews with the man himself and a variety of friends and associates (including actresses, rival actors, and directors; porn moguls like Larry Flynt and Al Goldstein; and, most surprisingly, Jeremy's own family), Ron Jeremy emerges as a likeable but self-obsessed guy whose insatiable drive for fame and success is also a struggle to overcome loneliness and a lack of self-worth. Not that anyone's going to feel too sorry for a man who gets paid to have sex, but Jeremy's honesty and sense of humor deserve some respect. And despite all the flesh on display, Porn Star is more matter-of-fact than titillating, taking in its subject with a sociological distance. --Bret Fetzer

The Blind Side
List Price: $19.94
Sale Price: $5.49

The Blind Side takes the true story of a young man who went from abandonment to success as a pro-football player and treats it with respect. The movie doesn't oversell what is, on the face of it, already compelling. It's almost impossible to describe the plot without sounding painfully inspirational: Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron, Be Kind Rewind), a hulking but gentle African-American teen in Tennessee, gets taken in by a well-to-do white family; the mother, Leigh Anne Touhy (Sandra Bullock), pushes and mothers the boy, who eventually wins a football scholarship to the University of Mississippi. In the wrong hands, this could have been maudlin, manipulative, and condescending. To the credit of writer-director John Lee Hancock, adapting Michael Lewis's acclaimed book, the result is intelligent, genuine, and alternately funny and moving. Leigh Anne could easily have been grandstanding and virtuous, but Bullock doesn't shy away from her vain and domineering side. The football scenes will be gripping even to non-sports fans because they've been so successfully grounded in Michael's emotional life. The all-around solid cast includes country music star Tim McGraw, pint-sized Jae Head (Hancock), and Kathy Bates as the tutor who guided Michael's academic success. Don't be surprised if you can't keep yourself from watching all the real-life photos of Michael, Leigh Anne, and the rest of the family that are featured in the credits; by the end of the movie, you will care about them all. --Bret Fetzer
The life story of Baltimore Ravens left tackle Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron) is told in this stirring drama. Lifted out of the poverty of a Memphis ghetto by his talent on the gridiron, the withdrawn teen finds acceptance and a chance to better himself when he's taken in by sassy socialite Leigh Anne Touhy (Best Actress Oscar-winner Sandra Bullock) and her loving family while he attends college. Based on the Michael Lewis book; Tim McGraw, Kathy Bates co-star. 128 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, French Dolby Digital 5.1, Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English (SDH), French, Spanish; deleted scenes.

Behind every great love is a great story. Two teenagers from opposite sides of the tracks fall in love during one summer together but are tragically forced apart. When they reunite 7 years later their passionate romance is rekindled forcing one of them to choose between true love and class order.Running Time: 124 min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: DRAMA UPC: 794043749728
When you consider that old-fashioned tearjerkers are an endangered species in Hollywood, a movie like The Notebook can be embraced without apology. Yes, it's syrupy sweet and clogged with clichés, and one can only marvel at the irony of Nick Cassavetes directing a weeper that his late father John--whose own films were devoid of saccharine sentiment--would have sneered at. Still, this touchingly impassioned and great-looking adaptation of the popular Nicholas Sparks novel has much to recommend, including appealing young costars (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) and appealing old costars (James Garner and Gena Rowlands, the director's mother) playing the same loving couple in (respectively) early 1940s and present-day North Carolina. He was poor, she was rich, and you can guess the rest; decades later, he's unabashedly devoted, and she's drifting into the memory-loss of senile dementia. How their love endured is the story preserved in the titular notebook that he reads to her in their twilight years. The movie's open to ridicule, but as a delicate tearjerker it works just fine. Message in a Bottle and A Walk to Remember were also based on Sparks novels, suggesting a triple-feature that hopeless romantics will cherish. --Jeff Shannon

Jane Eyre
List Price: $19.98
Sale Price: $5.48

Charlotte Brontë's Victorian romance is no stranger to the silver screen, but Sin Nombre director Cary Fukunaga's affecting and beautifully mounted adaptation is among the best. Sometimes, casting can make all the difference. In this case, Australia's Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) plays the determined Jane Eyre opposite Ireland's Michael Fassbender (Fish Tank) as the world-weary Edward Rochester (neither actor betrays their country of origin). Fukunaga begins with Jane's escape from Rochester's High Gothic Thornfield Hall before flashing back to the days when the plainspoken orphan lived with her cruel and resentful aunt (an unsympathetic Sally Hawkins). The aunt ships her off to a loveless charity school, where she still manages to receive a fine education, after which she lands a position as governess for Rochester's ward, Adèle. Though his housekeeper (Dame Judi Dench, excellent) makes Jane feel welcome, the brooding Rochester attempts to mock and demean her, but the quick-witted 19-year-old can hold her own. What might offend a more superficial man intrigues her employer (played by a gent more handsome than the author intended). Sparks fly, but he expresses greater interest in a local beauty. Just as Jane finally pierces Rochester's armor, she discovers his terrible secret, and hits the road. She meets a kindly missionary (Jamie Bell) and his sweet sisters, who offer her the family she never had, before a sequence of well-plotted developments allow Jane to forge her own future. For once, no one can stop her, making for a swoon-worthy, if bittersweet conclusion. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Director Cary Fukunaga presents this lavish version of Charlotte Bronte's classic tale. After surviving her harsh childhood, Jane Eyre (Mia Wasikowska) finds happiness when she becomes the governess at the Thornfield Hall estate. But when she falls for her enigmatic employer, Rochester (Michael Fassbender), her world suddenly becomes much more complicated. With Jamie Bell, Su Elliott, Sally Hawkins. 121 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English (SDH), French, Spanish; audio commentary by Fukanaga; featurettes; deleted scenes.

Here are some more information for Star Acting:

The English actor Jason Statham has become a staple in tough guy action movies of late. This buff, very HD friendly Englishman actually insists on doing all of his stunts and fight scenes himself without any support. Statham was born in Sydenham, London to a lounge singer and dancer. As a child he played sports, namely football; however, he did have a passion for diving and was a member of Britain's National Diving Squad for twelve years. Perhaps, his athletic prowess and love of sports has contributed to the action roles he has subsequently taken on during his acting career. Here is a list of some of Statham's greatest hits; you can catch most of these flicks in HD of course, on satellite TV.
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels: This movie marks both Statham's break out role and that of his director, Guy Ritchie as well. Both were relatively unknown at the time-in fact Statham was working as a model for the French Connection, when he was introduced to Ritchie who cast him to play the role of Bacon. The movie was a critical hit and you can often catch in on any movie channel on satellite TV.
Snatch: This movie marked Jason Statham's second collaboration with director Guy Richie. In it, Statham plays a boxing promoter called Turkish, who finds himself in the grip of a crazy gangster named Brick Top. The movie also stars Brad Pitt as an incomprehensible Irish boxer, Benicio Del Toro as Frankie Four Fingers and Dennis Farina. The movie is similar in style to Smoking Barrels, with its swift pace and ironic twists.
The One: This 2001 movie places Statham in the shoes of cop from the future. He stars alongside Jet Li. While the film didn't garner any awards, it is an entertaining martial arts affair, worthy of watching in HD for the action scenes.
The Transporter Films: These movies made Statham even more popular than he already was. Director Luc Besson picked the English actor himself to star in these action vehicles as Frank Martin, a criminal transporter. Martin used to be in the military, but has sense retired and put his skills to more financially sound jobs. This hugely lucrative series of movies is definitely packed with thrills and lots of high definition action.
The Italian Job: Statham was still relatively unknown when he took part in this movie starring Mark Wahlberg and Charlize Theron. In the movie, he plays an expert driver called Handsome Rob. The driving theme seems to be recurrent in Statham's oevre.
Revolver: This movie was actually Statham's third collaboration with Guy Ritchie. This time he played another gangster tough guy. Although the film didn't get rave reviews, in fact in was barely shown in the States, it was a little more pensive than Statham's other films.
Crank: In this high octane film, Statham plays a criminal hitman who has to keep his adrenaline constantly flowing in order to stay alive. This fast paced film is a great kinetic visual experience. It will keep you on the edge of your seat. Watch in HD for best effect.

Expect to be unemployed most of your life. Most acting jobs are short term. Many people want them, so if you are going to pursue that
career you have to have the perseverance of a bull dog. Learn not
to be discouraged.
Learn to develop all your talents. Learn to sing and dance -as in
stage plays- learn to talk and mimic accents. The people that
get the jobs are the most versatile. Practice reading aloud daily
Some jobs you might get with actors training: tour guide around
a city or museum, radio or TV announcer, sports announcer, weather
forecaster, Emcee for parties and functions.
You always need to be ready to ad lib a few minutes if asked.
Always have a few gags in your pocket and know how to deliver the
punch lines.
People who make it in show business are people who have prepared.
You hear a lot about people who were "discovered". That is
mostly hype. Show business is hype.
If there is any kind of little theaters in your area, go there and volunteer
your time doing whatever is asked of you. You can watch the actors and directors work and see how they do things. You might work
with props. Do whatever is needed to learn the business.
but don't quit your day job.
