Samsung M110 Solid Review – Tough Enough to Beat a Jcb?

Only recently it seems that we were bemoaning the lack of mobile phones designed for outdoors use, with the sad demise of the Nokia 5140i. Then just before Christmas, we received an early, bright yellow present, the JCB Tough Phone. We were admittedly impressed, as despite the lack of features, it really was very durable. The problem with this is that for those that really abuse their phones there was no choice, either you buy a JCB phone, or you resign yourself to replacing your phone every 2 months. The other issue is that some people might object to carrying around a phone that practically glows in the dark.

Cue the Samsung M110, also known as the Samsung Solid, the mobile phone giant’s first foray into the bomb-proof phone market, launched in direct competition to the JCB. The first thing that is noticeable is the distinct absence of bright colours, except on the screen where they belong. This phone comes in simple and plain olive green or black varieties, which are far less likely to cause eye-strain.

The Samsung M110 Solid has a rubberised casing and is IP54 rated. No I’m not sure exactly what that means either, but the JCB is rated the same and we think it just means the thing is blooming tough. It can resist dust, water jets and drops of 1m onto a concrete surface. We suspect it will resist more than that, but as we have to hand this unit back, didn’t want to try it out this time, maybe another day.

Unlike it’s competitor the Solid is quite light, only 95 grams and it’s also a bit smaller, measuring 109 x 48 x 17.9mm. The screen is a fairly basic 1.5” colour unit, displaying 65k colours and there is a basic VGA camera (i.e. not megapixel) with a flash that also doubles up as a torch (with emergency SOS beacon feature). Also included is Bluetooth, Polyphonic ringtone capability and to the credit of the handset an FM radio.

Okay, so it’s obvious that I’m stretching here, but quite honestly, being feature packed is not the point here. Like the JCB Tough Phone this is designed for one purpose and one purpose only, to take whatever damage comes its way and still let you call home to say you’re working late on a job and can your tea be put in the oven.

When looked at like this, this is a superb effort by Samsung, whether it is better than the JCB phone is another question. Quite honestly this is a smaller and neater option than the JCB and you won’t need to wear sunglasses if you buy one, but in my personal opinion and until we’ve had a chance to see which one of these is really the toughest, it’s really down to personal taste.
