Zumanity-This adult based show has resulted in many mixed reviews. It portrays sexual entertainment that might be too provocative for some. It is very interactive and amusing but there is no storyline to follow and the acrobatics are not portrayed as greatly as some Cirque du Soleil shows. If you are open minded and can admire the human body in this art form you should enjoy it. Zumanity is featured at New York-New York hotel.

KA-This show focuses around a brother and sister who get separated in a War. They go through many adventures along the way until they are finally reunited again. If the lack of acrobatic performance disappoints you,be prepared to be amazed by the mechanics of the stage alone. KA is featured at MGM Grand.

The Beatles-Love-Experience the celebration of the legendary Beatles in this creative performance of music, special effects and acrobatics. This show is mostly comprised of music and costumes more than acrobatic ability. This show is featured at Mirage.

Criss Angel-Believe-It really cannot be compared with Cirque du Soleil flair and must be focused on from a viewpoint of mystery and illusion that magic shows are known for. You can see Criss Angel perform at the Luxor.

Viva Elvis-For Cirque du Soleil enthusiasts this show is more about a tribute to the life and music of Elvis Presley with dancing, singing and some acrobatics. More like a musical. It can be seen at Aria Resort and Casino.

House of talents

Performing Alegria, 55 artists, contortionists, instrumentalists, vocalist and harlequin from 17 regions join to show one of the most forceful spectacles in the Cirque repertoire. Alegria, which means ‘glee' in Spanish, explores themes such as the development of power through different breeds, altering political forms and the opposition between youth and old age.

Characters from across the social milieu weave in and out of the tale, telling their tales through powertracks (group presentations), a fire dagger dance, aerial acts, contortion and acrobatics. "All the vary elements of the show have totally different energies, which is very exciting," says An De Win, one of the participants. "Some of the acts are slower, others are breathtakingly explosive. It's a wonderful mix of all you can think of," she continues.

Dramatically illuminated backgrounds and coloured illumination along with rich settings provide the excellent backdrop. "The personages are so special and are complemented by the make-up, choreography and music. The show moves you to a wonderful universe," she adds. Cirque du Soleil, meaning Circus of the Sun, was initially intended to be a year-long travelling circus, performing in different places around Quebec, Canada. Its founder Guy Laliberte was a Canadian street artist who, set up Cirque du Soleil in the 1980s. Since then, the company has become a worldwide appearance, with shows including Nouvelle Experience, Saltimbanco and Dralion.

The popularity of Cirque du Soleil in the Middle East was fixed when the troop performed for the first time in the region in 2007. The staging of Quidam, which also took place in Ibn Battuta Mall (shopping centre Dubai), saw more than 100,000 people visit over short period. It was, and still is, the most successful entertainment event to ever be staged in Dubai. Ibn Battuta Mall presentation follows a partnership between Cirque du Soleil, Isthithmar World and Nakheel, Dubai government's development company, in 2008. Isthithmar and Nakheel both bought 10% shares in the company for a reported Dhs367,000 (US$100,000). In 2008, plans were also declared to build a persistent 1,800-seat Cirque du Soleil theatre, due for completion in 2011, on The Palm Jumeirah.

Working With Cirque Du Soleil?

Cirque du Soleil regularly advertise for casual front of house jobs every time they tour in the country. You can find these jobs advertised on their site, sometimes in the newspapers, or on sites like www.artshub.com.au or www.alia.com.au. They don't generally take just anyone, but people who already have experience (professional) in theatre and backstage jobs. Also, they may hire through local production companies, like Showtech, for which you would also need experience.

Acting agents have nothing to do with it: actors use agents, stage crew don't.

Also, if the show is already playing, I doubt you can get a job with them for the current season. They will have already booked in all of their crew and usually advertise way ahead of opening night for crew; you'll just have to wait for the next season.
