Is yoshi a nickname for Josh?

My name is josh and through the course of my life some people have called me yoshi or yosh at different times but i never really understood why. i thought they were just messing with me. Recently i heard that is because a soft "j" is a "y" sound so that joshie sounds like yoshi. anyone else with similar experiences?

That's funny... I had a buddy back in college that went by Yoshi and his name was Josh too. He said he got it because he played Mario Brothers a lot... He could have been pulling my leg though. Anyway, every time I go to search for him, I get a bunch of people that also have that nickname who are also named Josh. So, yeah, I think it may have to do with the J at the beginning.
