Network marketing  or Multi-level marketing (MLM) home businesses can be some of the most lucrative and exciting ways to add to your portfolio of income streams. However, there are some problems; not with the company or its products, but the people presenting them. It is so easy to get started with a extremely low start up cost and thereby causing a high turnover rate. Most people jump in with starry eyes on the prize and never stop to realize the skill sets needed.

When I had my first mlm experience, I was looking for drop shippers to come up with an idea for a product to sell on web sites. When I looked into stay at home jobs, I started off with web sites to build a business around. That's when I had a friend tell me that her brother on the west coast was doing some kind of home business.

So, I called to see what he was doing. As it turned out the business was a large nutritional mlm company that will remain nameless. I could name it... but because of my experience, I'll protect the company and its product. Because, again... it's not the company or the product, it is the people and their methods; so that you understand the two are distinctly different.

I've seen some shady stuff,  and oh...was this some kind of embarrassing to be a part of. Talking to my upline on the west coast wasn't bad and everything he told me seemed alright. Then he sent me to some local training meetings here where I live. People he had no oversight or connection with.

Mistake number one. Having  had some management experience in organizations myself, I later thought this a huge mistake on his part. One key to success in organizations is to stay in touch with your people. Not to micromanage but to track progress by asking questions, stay connected,  and share dreams for the way forward.

So, my first meeting, I arrive a bit early because that's who I am. Only to be there by myself. Shortly one and then two folks showed up rushing around putting up samples of a company drink product for attendees to sample. Gradually, more of what appeared to be regulars began to show and a small number of us newbies.

As it turned out, it was a pretty small group. After some brief intros from local distributors, they had a "guest" speaker from another state introduced as some high level company man. Well, as I recall what he said was not as embarrassing as what he attempted to do once he was finished with his presentation.

We were asked to stand and the speaker with all the regulars started what could only be described as some type of victory chant. We were all encouraged to chant along but I and many there could not. Here's the thing, most of us were brand spanking new. We had no clue at this point much less a reason to be jubilant. And after that experience did not want to get a clue from this group.

I guess we were supposed to be injected with enthusiasm for service. The talk from the speaker was not preparing me for action.  I attended one more meeting out of commitment and to see if the previous meeting was an aberration.   Same thing, only no special speaker, just locals. They had someone who had achieved a certain level of sales speak and then the same attempt at fake enthusiasm.

Among the products sharing advice we were given, here was a sales tip for the group. We were to order a large amount of samples. With those samples we were to walk about town or a mall and offer the samples and talk to everyone we could. As if everyone was a potential customer. The mantra went something like, when in doubt, blurt it out.

This was not something that I wanted to be associated with or teach anyone to do. Over time I took down all the products that I'd put on my web site and turned toward affiliate marketing.  At that time I had no plan or strategy available to grow my network marketing business.  And I certainly was not getting far with my upline's advice or the local "training" meetings.

With this story in mind however, Network Marketing is a good business model. The Network Marketing or MLM business model is one of the quickest ways I'm aware of to gain leverage for business growth. My area of interest is in the area of nutrition, the topic of a second web site I've started recently.   This will be the area that I'll seek out products to sell.  

So, what's the point of this tale you say. Here is the short version and the topic to be developed at another time. Network Marketing is all about sales period. Moving the product provides your income and the rewards from your company. But not the irritating car salesman type of sales. There is a way for you to sell your product that just about anyone can enjoy doing. It's called attraction marketing or sales.

6 Frightening IRS Horror Stories

1. A Cayman Islands Vacation Gone Bad  
When most people hear the words “Cayman Islands” they probably think of a relaxing Caribbean vacation. However, many might also think about illegal tax shelters, as the islands are somewhat infamous for hosting the private bank accounts of many American tax evaders. A few years ago, Joe ran into a few problems of his own in the Cayman Islands. He and his business partners used to vacation in, and bank in the islands on a regular basis, until Joe’s vengeful ex wife got wind of the situation. She tipped off the IRS and Joe found out about it one afternoon when 25 federal agents stormed his home and business, ceasing all kinds of financial information. Joe was considered a flight risk and imprisoned under $5 million bail. It took dozens of court cases, and thousands of dollars in legal fees to prove his innocence, and resulted in a major lifestyle change for Joe.

2. The Audit of Endless Receipts
Auditors are notorious for being difficult every now and then when it comes to documenting expenses and qualifying for credits, but usually leave a little leeway. However, this was not the case for a taxpayer named Heather who was audited by what she now refers to as the world’s most relentless auditor. She claims that the auditor in question hounded her for not only proof of her business expenses, but receipts for every single personal and professional transaction made over the past two years. The auditor supposedly made her scrounge up receipts for transactions for as little as a dollar or two. Needless to say, Heather could not find every document required and faced several penalties.   

3. They Came with Guns
Restaurant owner John Colaprete woke up one March morning in 1994, unsuspecting of the terror that would soon be at his doorstep. That afternoon, gun-wielding federal agents stormed his home, his restaurant managers home, and his two restaurants with no explanation and no apologies. John, a former marine, was in total shock and had no idea what could cause such a raid. It turns out one of Johns former bookkeepers, who had been fired for embezzling from her employers, had gone to the IRS with a horror story of her own. However, she fabricated her story in order to cover her own mistakes and told the IRS that John was involved in both money laundering and gun trafficking.  

Once the IRS realized he was innocent, John became a champion for scorned taxpayers everywhere. He spoke to a roomful of U.S. senators about his experience, and explained that his restaurants were left in shambles and that his reputation was ruined by the false scandal. These days John gets calls every day from taxpayers sharing their own IRS horror stories.  

4. The Scorned Preparer
In 1994, Richard, an experienced tax preparer, owned one of the largest accounting and tax firms in the State of Oklahoma. However, he soon saw the dark side of the IRS. One afternoon, over 20 federal agents stormed his business under suspicion of fraud. However, Gardner was completely innocent. Upon being found not guilty, he took legal action against the IRS. He soon became the first American to win a case under the Hyde Amendment and won a monetary settlement from the federal government.

5.  The Beauty Shop Butchery  
Celia, an honest and hardworking beauty shop owner, had her life ruined by the IRS a few years ago when her shop’s equipment was seized and sold at auction to pay her back tax debts. Celia did not know much about taxes and hired a professional to assist her. Fortunately, the tax consultant found that Celia had indeed paid her taxes in full. The IRS had made a mathematical error, accidentally entering her tax amount twice in to the system, which made it look like she had not paid her taxes at all. Although she got her equipment back, she lost many of her clients and income due to the incident.

6. Ghosts of Receipts Past
Julie faced her worst nightmare one evening when she came home to fire trucks in front of her burning home. To make matters worse the tax deadline was just around the corner and she could not recover enough of her financial document to prepare her return. Julie contacted the IRS to explain the situation, and told IRS personal how she had lost her entire archive of financial documents and receipts. Although she was able to file for an automatic extension, Julie was shocked to find an IRS audit letter in the mail less than two weeks later. Without any proof to back up the information in her previous returns, she was forced to pay over $18,000 in unpaid taxes and penalties.

What music should I prepare for an open audition for Little Shop of Horrors?

I'm going to audition for a a musical comedy called Little Shop of Horrors. The auditions requires that I prepare 16 bars of 2 contrasting songs of the musical theatre style. Wich songs should I choose. I'm not sure exactly what it means to be musical 'theatre style', I've never auditioned before. Help me please.

The key is to show what you can really do. "Little Shop of Horrors" has some varied character styles (Seymour, the Dentist etc.) You want to show the director that you are versatile and that you could fit on of those parts.

Since "Little Shop" is largely a comedy, I would pick lighter songs. I'd stay away from Andrew Lloyd Weber (which for me is ALWAYS a good rule!) and pick something with a bit of a rock or pop edge. Try not to pick songs from "Little Shop" as you don't want to pigeonhole yourself. If you're feeling brave, look at "Tommy." You could try "Godspell" or "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" as well, which might show off a good 'rock' sound. Try a love song too, just for fun. Usually these songs let you show a softer sound. There are good love-type songs in shows like "Oliver" or "Oklahoma." You could also look at old standard composers like Cole Porter or Gershwin, whose songs are used in lots of musicals, and come in all different styles.

Most of all, pick something you are COMFORTABLE with. If you aren't a strong singer, pick a song that gives you room to act your tail off. Most of all, show your personality.

SOUTH BEND -- Director Ted Manier had some bad news for several of the men who auditioned for South Bend Civic Theatre's production of "Little Shop of Horrors." No, he wasn't rejecting them without hearing them read first, but he couldn't cast them, either, in the part they wanted.
