Romeo and Juliet (Royal Ballet)- Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn
List Price: $29.99
Sale Price: $17.01

It's not a stretch to call Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn the most sublime of all dance partners and Sergei Prokofiev the most gifted 20th-century ballet composer. And so it goes without saying that the 1966 film version of the Royal Ballet production of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet featuring Nureyev and Fonteyn as the star-crossed lovers is an absolute must-have for anyone who cares a whit about the art. Director Paul Czinner has made all the right moves, alternating between full shots of the performers with long shots that accentuate how Kenneth MacMillan's fastidious choreography is inexorably linked to the characters, their story, the elaborate sets, and the viewer. Nicholas Georgiadis's costumes are sumptuous without being overdone, the supporting dancers and ensemble are as exquisite as the leads, and John Lanchbery conducts the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House with just the right mixture of joviality and tragedy that Prokofiev's classic score needs but doesn't always receive. --Kevin Filipski
Prokofiev's adaptation of Shakespeare's undying tragedy is performed with consummate grace and skill by the British Royal Ballet. Striking work by Margot Fonteyn, Rudolf Nureyev, and David Blair. 130 min. Standard; Soundtrack: stereo music score.

Kiss Me, Kate (1948 Original Broadway Cast)
List Price: $8.99
Sale Price: $25.89
|
|
|
Opening at the tail end of 1948, Kiss Me, Kate became an instant classic--and amazingly didn't receive a full-scale revival until 1999. All the more reason to revel in its original version. With its cunning play-within-a-play premise (a musical update of The Taming of the Shrew reverberates in backstage feuds), brilliant mix of high and low comedy, and of course some of Cole Porter's better-known songs--"So in Love," "I Hate Men," Too Darn Hot," "Always True to You (In My Fashion)"--Kiss Me, Kate remains a funny, zesty hall of mirrors. Hard as you may try to find a fly in the ointment, there's no fault with the cast either--Patricia Morison, for instance, is a perfectly petulant Lilli Vanessi. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Romeo & Juliet

Sale Price: $2.71

Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet was unique in its day for casting kids in the play's pivotal roles of, well, kids. Seventeen-year-old Leonard Whiting and 15-year-old Olivia Hussey play the titular pair, the Bard's star-crossed lovers who defy a running feud between their families in order to be together in love. Typically played on stage and in previous film productions by adult actors, the innocent look and rawness of Whiting and Hussey resonated at the time with a burgeoning youth movement from San Francisco to Prague. The tragic romance at the center of the story also clicked with anti-authority sentiments, but even without that, Zeffirelli scores points by validating the ideals and passions of strong-willed adolescents. Less successful are scenes requiring the actors to have a fuller grasp of the text, though the best thing going remains the unambiguous duel between Romeo and Tybalt (Michael York). Lavishly photographed by Pasquale de Santis on location in Italy, this Romeo and Juliet brought a different tone and dimension to a story that had become tiresome in reverential presentations. --Tom Keogh
Director Franco Zeffirelli's exceptional version of Shakespeare's immortal tale casts young unknowns Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting as the teenage lovers crossed by the stars and doomed by the animosity felt between their families, the Montagues and the Capulets. Co-stars Michael York, Milo O'Shea, John McEnery; narrated by Laurence Olivier. 138 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English; theatrical trailer.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Special Edition)

The legend of King Arthur will never be the same once the Pythons get through with it. Klutzy knights, killer rabbits, coconut-laden swallows, taunting Frenchmen and other oddities all add up to one of the funniest, most outrageous comedies ever. Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, Michael Palin star. 89 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English, French, Spanish; screenplay; audio commentary by Jones, Gilliam, Cleese, Idle, Palin; sing-along songs; documentary; original sketches; photo gallery; theatrical trailers; more. Two-disc set.
Could this be the funniest movie ever made? By any rational measure of comedy, this medieval romp from the Monty Python troupe certainly belongs on the short list of candidates. According to Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide, it's "recommended for fans only," but we say hogwash to that--you could be a complete newcomer to the Python phenomenon and still find this send-up of the Arthurian legend to be wet-your-pants hilarious. It's basically a series of sketches woven together as King Arthur's quest for the Holy Grail, with Graham Chapman as the King, Terry Gilliam as his simpleton sidekick Patsy, and the rest of the Python gang filling out a variety of outrageous roles. The comedy highlights are too numerous to mention, but once you've seen Arthur's outrageously bloody encounter with the ominous Black Knight (John Cleese), you'll know that nothing's sacred in the Python school of comedy. From holy hand grenades to killer bunnies to the absurdity of the three-headed knights who say "Ni--!," this is the kind of movie that will strike you as fantastically funny or just plain silly, but why stop there? It's all over the map, and the pace lags a bit here and there, but for every throwaway gag the Pythons have invented, there's a bit of subtle business or grand-scale insanity that's utterly inspired. The sum of this madness is a movie that's beloved by anyone with a pulse and an irreverent sense of humor. If this movie doesn't make you laugh, you're almost certainly dead. --Jeff Shannon

Here are some more information for Shakespeare Poster:

Sir John Everett Mills was born in 1829 and died in 1896. He is remembered for great artworks and some scandals that are still talked about today, however he did great works in many places as the quote below testifies.
A quote from the book "The Pre-Raphaelites" by Sandra Forty
"Having started out as a young firebrand, Millais became a stalwart establishment figure - even becoming a baronet always faithful to the dictates of the R.A. He regularly showed at Academy exhibitions and became so influential there that he was made President in 1896, the same year that he died."
The following list is a short list of his works (Some of these paintings took over three years to complete, with all the sketching, drawing and detail):
Cymon and Iphigenia
Christ in the House of His Parents
The Blind Girl
Hearts are Trumps
Waiting
Chill October
Ruling Passion
Leisure Hours
Ruling Passion
The Piper
Chill October
Some interesting facts about Millais:
He was the youngest ever entrant into the Royal academy at 11 years of age.
He was one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848.
He was an athletic, outdoors man, who loved hunting, shooting and fishing and popular amongst his peers. Perhaps he may have been a sportsman, if he were born in the last twenty years.
He was an indulgent father, particularly to his daughters.
He was vain, but kind and would only allow himself to be photographed in a certain way.
His paintings hang in some of the worlds most notable galleries. We can enjoy his works in either poster or card form.
