To the ranks of shows too brilliant and outrageous for prime time (The Ben Stiller Show, Andy Richter Controls the Universe), add Seth McFarlane's Family Guy. This animated series, which debuted after the 1999 Super Bowl, simply sparked too much controversy and offended too many sensibilities to survive (Entertainment Weekly dubbed it "the Awful Show They Just Keep Putting on the Air"). That the Fox network also played hackysack with its schedule, ensuring viewers would not be able to find it, sealed its fate (it was cancelled in 2002). This boxed set containing all 28 episodes from the first two seasons is payback for the show's devoted cult following, who may be moved to echo the words of infant Stewie Griffin, the megalomaniacal 1-year-old bent on matricide and world domination: "Victory is mine!" The dysfunctional Griffins of Quahog, Rhode Island, invite comparisons to The Simpsons. The testicular-chinned father, Peter Griffin, is a clueless oaf in the Homer mold. "Peter, what did you promise me last night?" asks his long-suffering wife Lois in one episode. "That I wouldn't drink at the stag party," he replies. "And what did you do?" she asks. "Drank at the stag part--oh ho ho, I almost walked into that one," he cackles. Other family members include teenage daughter Meg, a desperate high school social pariah; 13-year-old son Chris, a chip off his father's blockhead; and Brian, the family's sarcastic talking dog. But this series' true inspiration is football-pated Stewie (voiced by McFarlane, who earned an Emmy), who was born to be a Bond villain once he escaped his mother's "ovarian bastille." Family Guy recklessly ventured where The Simpsons feared to tread. In one episode, Meg's one and only friend turns out to be the member of a suicidal cult. In another, Death (voiced by Norm McDonald) becomes an unwanted houseguest. Each episode plays fast and furious with surreal flashes (in one episode, Peter turns his house into a puppet) and pop-culture references and TV, movie, and commercial parodies that invite repeated viewings. Freed from its own family-hour bastille and the whims of dim network executives, Family Guy can be appreciated at last on its own profane, sacrilegious, and irreverent terms. Welcome to the DVD family, Griffins. --Donald Liebenson

Here are some more information for Seth Macfarlane:

The Simpsons will forever be the yardstick against which every family oriented animated show will be measured. Futurama was an excellently animated show, rich with creativity. South Park indulges in its trademarked vulgarity and judgment. King of the Hill, while not appreciated by all, illustrates the funny side of everyday life with a traditional simple man. Now, from the talented mind of Seth MacFarlane, arrives "Family Guy"!
No matter what your age or personality, "Family Guy" will appeal to you. The show is full of wacky flashbacks and pop culture references that, if you understand them, will make your sides hurt with laughter, and if you do not understand them, can still entertain you based on their absurdity. Furthermore, the political satire and somewhat sacrilegious aspect of the show should not be overlooked.
The characters on the show are individuals you would come across in everyday life whom you may not realize are ripe with hilarity. Whether it is your intoxicated idiot friend [Peter], smooth talking ladies man [Quagmire], the attractive house wife [Lois], the dog that you are sure you have conversed with about theatre while sipping a dry martini [Brian], or even that baby you know with a British accent whose primary goal is to take over the world [Stewie]. Clearly, the characters that are unique to this show are the dog and especially the baby. Stewie will, without a doubt, make you laugh out loud, be it because of his plans of world domination or those of killing his mother. It is interesting to note that Seth has said, to him, when creating this show, Stewie was just an afterthought. It is funny that that slight afterthought is the most irreplaceable aspect of "Family Guy".
After years of cultivation, beginning with his 1995 short "The Life of Larry," and sequel 1996 short "Larry and Steve," Seth MacFarlane gave rise to "Family Guy" in all it is glory. While the final features of "Family Guy" are somewhat altered from his two original shorts [which I recommend every true "Family Guy" fan make an effort to find and watch], the basic premise remains the same; an idiot drunk of Irish descent living in Quahog, Rhode Island with this beautiful wife, three kids, and talking dog.
At this point in time I would like to clear up a huge misunderstanding. Contrary to widespread opinion, when investing your time in "Family Guy", you are certainly not receiving a Simpsons rip-off. This show is much more edgy and fast paced, without crossing over into the radical crudeness of South Park.
Fox did impair the ratings of "Family Guy" by switching its timeslots constantly when it was on air, which eventually led to it is cancellation. However, the opinions of Fox do not reflect those of the loyal fans of this show. Most fans were confused and devastated, spouting Stewie's catchphrase, "What the deuce?!" Recently we have received word, as of November 2003, that the return of "Family Guy" by March 2005 is confirmed, due to spectacular sales of the "Family Guy" DVDs. All of us devoted and obsessed fans anticipate a "Family Guy" era with sheer giddiness and enthusiasm.

Family Guy: Laughing At The Lighter Side Of Life
There have been very few shows which have been able to hold their own like Family Guy against a wave of controversies that has been hurled towards them ever since the show's inception.
An animated take on the modern American family of today, the lead character of the show features Peter Griffin- a fat, lazy, unintuitive husband with an average job who goes more by the heart than his head. Presented in stark contrast is his wife Lois- the attractive, logically thinking wife representing the fantasy of all American males. They have two kids Chris and Meg who different two shades of teenage cravings and the talking dog Brian is the source of illuminating wisdom in the house full of madcap mishaps.
However, the star laurels of Family Guy rest on one and one person alone. Stewie Griffin plays an one year old homoerotic baby who dreams of world domination and plans to kill his mother. His dialogues are laced with layered intelligence and sarcastic humor at its pinnacle making him come in direct comparison to other legendary animated kids like Bart and Lisa from the Simpsons and Eric Cartman from the equally controversial South Park.
What sets the show apart is its approach to modern day life that dabbles in between scathing social commentary and unrelated pop culture gags culminating in a laugh riot parodying modern sensibilities. It night lack character depth like the Simpsons or the intellectual wit of South Park, but has a loyal fan following of its own making it the only TV show to Come Back after being cancelled by FOX.
Seth MacFarlane, the creator of the show has often come under a line of fire for a number of issues. Peter Griffin has been labeled as a Homer Simpson clone by most Simpson loyalists while several have complained about the irrelevant nature of cut away pop culture shots without any context to the plot.
The biggest issue however lies in the Family Guy vs Sarah Palin debate that takes the effect of such shows on modern society on a much deeper context. Sarah Palin, the former Governor of Alaska and 2008 vice presidential candidate took on the writers of Family Guy by calling them "heartless jerks" for their portrayal of a girl with Down Syndrome in one of the episodes.
The controversial episode shows Chris wooing a girl called Ellen with the syndrome who replies during a dinner date that her father is an accountant and her mother is the former governor of Alaska, a subtle jab towards Palin herself whose youngest son Trig has Downs Syndrome.
The Family Guy vs Sarah Palin controversy sparked a huge debate on the portrayal of disability on television and the limit of the "offend everyone" principles such shows are aimed at. Seth MacFarlane commented saying he was proud of the character Ellen who was headstrong and dynamic despite the Syndrome and Andrea Fay Friedman, the women with Down syndrome who voiced the character said she did not find it an insult to have the disease unlike Palin who carried Trig around for sympathy and votes. Palin and her daughter Bristol launched a verbal tirade against the show making it one of the biggest television controversies in the history of Family Guy and American sitcoms.

Does Seth Macfarlane have a nervous tick?
I saw Seth( creator and voices for Family Guy etc) do a very lengthy interview on Howard Stern and his left arm was twitching uncontrollably. He was well aware of it and kept trying to use that arm for gestures etc.so it wouldn't be obvious however it was. Maybe its Parkinson's? Anyone know what that is? I felt kinda bad for him.
I don't feel bad for him. He made fun of Michael J. Fox (though Michael J. Fox is a complete a** who uses animal testing in his foundation) and also made fun of other crippling diseases. I think karma is coming back to haunt him.
