The title suggests some God-awful, trying-too-hard sex farce, but Relax... It's Just Sex! is a surprisingly layered comedy that takes some serious and compelling emotional turns. Jennifer Tilly (Bound, Bullets over Broadway) plays Tara, a straight woman who's something of a den mother to a circle of friends, most of whom are gay or lesbian. While she tries to get pregnant with her new boyfriend, her friend Vincey (Mitchell Anderson) finally meets a guy he likes, an artist named Buzz (T.C. Carson), only to bring him to a dinner party where Buzz hooks up with Javi (Eddie Garcia), who has recently discovered that he's HIV positive. Meanwhile, Sarina (Cynda Williams from One False Move) has just learned that her lover, Megan, has slept with a man and runs into the arms of Robin (Lori Petty, Tank Girl, A League of Their Own). The movie takes story lines that could have been soap-opera clichés and rescues them with clever but realistic dialogue and strong, surprising performances. Over the course of the film the characters grow increasingly genuine, giving some of the twists in their lives an unexpected emotional impact. Relax... It's Just Sex! didn't get much of a release in theaters, perhaps because it's a sympathetic, realistic portrayal of gay men and lesbians, including some graphic sex. The transfer from film to video has marred the cinematography, giving the film a somewhat fuzzy image, but don't let that put you off from this refreshing, funny, and moving film. --Bret Fetzer

With authorized bios like this, who needs exposés? While thrilling tournament footage attests to Venus and Serena Williams's domination of tennis, they come off as mere pawns to their father, self-proclaimed "master planner" Richard, who, as the narrator informs viewers, "single-mindedly raised two sporting champions." Richard has served as the sisters' manager, coach, and father, and according to this program he planned his daughters' destinies before they were born. There is no arguing with his success, which is delineated in the number of championships won, the endorsements earned, and the sisters' phenomenal net worth. But self-deprecation ("I'm just a poor little cotton picker") is not Richard's game. "People look up to me wherever I go," he states at one point. "It's like I'm a god almost." There is much here to inspire young fans, who may enjoy the charming home movie footage and living vicariously through the women's glamorous off-court activities, which range from fashion shoots and music video appearances to commercials. The Dreamcast's Virtua Tennis was a hit because of its gently climbing learning curve and compelling TV-style presentation. Its sequel, Sega Sports Tennis for the PlayStation2, retains everything that was great about that original game and improves it with 16 male and female tennis stars (including cover girls Venus and Serena Williams), three difficulty settings, and a create-a-player feature. At first, playing the game is almost as simple as Pong: Move your character toward the ball and press a button. Provided they're close enough to the ball, they should be able to return the volley. To progress through the increasingly tough challengers, though, players will need to learn how to direct the ball, perform lobs and smashes, and use finesse with topspins and backspins. The game still has a few areas that could be improved. First, there's no way to change the court perspective--one side of the court is always in the foreground, the other in the background. It's easier to play the game when your character is right in front of you, but the characters switch sides between games in the set. It makes sense in the two-player game, since having the camera move with the character would require a split-screen arrangement, but gamers should at least have the option of staying with their tennis pro during computer matches. The only other complaint is that while Sega Sports Tennis has an excellent two-player game--with both the singles and cooperative or competitive doubles--there are no three- or four-player options, as there were in the Dreamcast version. Granted, there are only two controller slots on the PS2, but plenty of other games get around this by using the Multitap accessory. Still, even with only two at a time, Sega Sports Tennis is a great party game since the matches are short and anyone--even those who know nothing about tennis and have never played a video game in their lives--can pick up this game and have fun. --Porter B.
