Bugsy Malone [VHS] Bugsy Malone [VHS]

Writer-director Alan Parker's feature debut Bugsy Malone is a pastiche of American movies, a musical gangster comedy set in 1929, featuring prohibition, showgirls, and gang warfare, with references to everything from Some Like It Hot to The Godfather. Uniquely, though, all the parts are played by children, including an excellent if underused Jodie Foster as platinum-blonde singer Tallulah, Scott Baio in the title role and a nine-year-old Dexter Fletcher wielding a baseball bat. Cream-firing "spluge guns" sidestep any real violence and the movie climaxes cheerfully with the biggest custard pie fight this side of Casino Royale (1967). Unfortunately for a musical, Paul Williams's score--part honky-tonk jazz homage, part 1970s Elton John-style pop--lets the side down with a lack of memorable tunes. Nevertheless, Parker's direction is spot on and the look of the film is superb, a fantasy movie-movie existing in the same parallel reality as The Cotton Club and Chicago. A rare British love letter to classic American cinema, Bugsy Malone remains a true original; in Parker's words "the work of a madman" and one of the strangest yet most stylish children's films ever made. --Gary S. Dalkin

Lewis Carroll's classic fantasy receives a spectacular rendition from producer Irwin Allen, with songs by Steve Allen. Follow young Alice (Natalie Gregory) as she meets the likes of the March Hare (Roddy McDowall), the Cheshire Cat (Telly Savalas), the Duchess (Martha Raye), a dancing Caterpillar (Sammy Davis, Jr.), and the White Rabbit (Red Buttons). 187 min. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: French.

The king of 1970s disaster movies, producer Irwin Allen, brought together novelist Paul Zindel, songwriter Steve Allen, and a host of celebrities for a pair of 1985 TV movies paying homage to Lewis Carroll's Alice. In this first installment, the 7-year-old girl dreams of being grown up enough to join the adults for tea, only to shrink to miniature size, climb through a hole beneath the door, and follow a twitchy Red Buttons in big white rabbit ears. Whether arguing with the Mad Hatter (Anthony Newley), or trying to keep her head in the company of the Queen of Hearts (Jayne Meadows), Alice is constantly running into a host of '70s and '80s personalities like Telly Savalas, Ringo Starr, Scott Baio, and Shelley Winters. If this roster isn't enough to make a poor girl trippy, she also meets up with Sammy Davis Jr. as the caterpillar, and the pair perform an entertaining hip-hop-esque tap number to "Father William." An enjoyably campy version of Alice's wondrous journey, it features detailed sets, marvelously tacky costumes, and mildly clever musical numbers. This 90-minute TV movie's pleasant goofiness will amuse children 4 and older as well as nostalgically minded adults. The TV movie has been broken into two parts on video with Alice Through the Looking Glass picking up where this one leaves off. --Kimberly Heinrichs

All 19 episodes from the first season--including "Miracle Cure," "Murder at the Telethon," "The Restless Remains," "Flashdance with Death," and "Sister Michael Wants You," along with the "Jake and the Fatman" episode that introduced the Dr. Mark Sloan character--are available in a five-disc set. 14 3/4 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo; bonus "Jake & the Fatman" episode. **19 episodes on 5 discs. 14 3/4 hrs.**

One of America's most beloved TV actors, Dick Van Dyke, proved his longevity and acting chops in Diagnosis Murder, as Dr. Mark Sloan, chief of staff at L.A.'s Community General Hospital, as well as a consultant for the police department on confounding murders. The show was originally conceived as a Murder, She Wrote-with-boys, to tap into the late '80s and early '90s wave of spunky-senior shows (Golden Girls, Matlock et al.). But Van Dyke's versatility and charisma drew fans of all ages, and the first season shows his breadth as an actor. The mysteries range from the fairly typical (a beautiful patient surrounded by intrigue has amnesia--or does she?) to the gritty and offbeat (Sloan's son, played by Van Dyke's real son, Barry, gets too close to a gang of corrupt cops, with near-disastrous results). Through it all, Van Dyke's Sloan is avuncular, thoughtful, warm, and serious, but conveys enough wry humor and cheekiness to take considerable advantage of Van Dyke's comic timing. One episode in this season, "Inheritance of Death," features Van Dyke playing multiple roles--young, old, men, women--in a conniving family grasping for the inheritance of an ancient family member, and it's laugh-out-loud funny. Another standout in the cast is Scott Baio as Sloan's earnest sidekick, Dr. Jack Stewart. The boxed set features all 19 episodes of the first season, plus the episode of Jake and the Fatman which introduced the character of Dr. Mark Sloan. --A.T. Hurley

Who's the Boss? - The Complete First Season Who's the Boss? - The Complete First Season
List Price: $19.99

A long-running favorite that aired on ABC from 1984 to 1992, this situation comedy spotlighted Tony Danza as a former baseball player who, along with teenage daughter Alyssa Milano, leaves hectic New York City to take a job as a domestic, working in Connecticut for advertising executive Judith Light. Danny Pintauro and Katherine Helmond also starred as Light's son and mother, respectively.

Who's the Boss? was a standard sitcom--turned on its head. Sure, there was a mom, a dad, two cute kids, a house in the suburbs... and a live studio audience. But Angela Bower (Judith Light) was a single advertising exec with a son (Danny Pintauro) and Tony Micelli (Tony Danza) was a widowed ex-ballplayer with a daughter (future Charmed star Alyssa Milano). The Connecticut mansion belonged to Angela (along with the big '80s hair and shoulder pads) and Tony wasn't her boyfriend, but rather her housekeeper. Then there was her mother, Mona (the incomparable Katherine Helmond). The sexed-up, slightly cracked grandmother is a primetime staple, but in the former Soap matriarch's hands, the character was a cut above (and usually got the best lines). As Angela complains to her in the pilot, "You've sent me a man for a housekeeper!" "Oh, don't be sexist," Mona replies. "A man can do meaningless, unproductive work just as well as a woman." "Meaningless, unproductive work" is what Tony does for the Bowers--and does well--but he and Samantha (Milano) also become part of the family. Angela and Tony go on a number of dates with other people, but there's an obvious sexual tension between them. The show would continue to exploit that tension for eight seasons to great success (even inspiring a British version called The Upper Hand, with Honor Blackman as the "Mona" character). Helmond, meanwhile, would garner an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her efforts. Highlights include "Mona Gets Pinned," in which Mona takes up with a younger man, and "Angela's Ex, Part I," in which Angela reconciles with her estranged husband--who proceeds to fire Tony. Guest stars include Betty White (Mary Tyler Moore) in "Eye on Angela" and Danza's Taxi co-star Jeff Conoway in "First Kiss." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

South Park (DVD) Review

Premiering in the late summer of 1997, South Park took American pop culture by storm with its no-holds-barred examination of social and political issues and its lewd yet unique brand of cartoon humor. Created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, South Park is the lynchpin of cable network Comedy Central's original programming lineup. Centered around the lives of several kids in the small Colorado town of South Park (a place prone to odd and paranormal occurrences), the series presents itself in the form of crude animated drawings, yet the concept works, playing home to innumerable well-written shows filled with boundless wit, well-timed one-liners, and an endless array of politically-incorrect humor. Love it or hate it, South Park is a truly original animated series with relentlessly off-the-wall plot twists and comic relief. If you love oddball humor, then this is the show for you...

South Park mostly follows the exploits of four elementary school kids - Cartman (who's overweight and sarcastic), Kyle (who dreams of eliminating his little brother Ike), Stan (who throws up at the sight of a girl he likes), and Kenny (who manages to get killed in every episode). All four attend South Park Elementary School where third grade teacher Mr. Garrison educates them with the use of a hand-puppet named "Mr. Hat" and cafeteria employee "Chef" McElroy (Isaac Hayes) dispenses his advice while periodically breaking into 70's love songs about making love to women. South Park is the setting for numerous oddities such as alien visitors, a monster with a hand of celery and the leg of Patrick Duffy, and Big Gay Al's Big Gay Boat Ride. South Park also hosts a number famous people from time to time, such as the Devil, Saddam Hussein, the Antichrist, Kathy Lee Gifford, Scott Baio, Tina Yothers, Elton John, and Jesus Christ - who has his own cable access show...

The South Park DVD features a number of hilarious episodes including the season premiere "Cartman Gets an Anal Probe" in which Kyle tries to rid himself of his baby brother Ike by playing a game of "kick the baby" at the bus stop. Meanwhile, Cartman reveals to his friends that he had a nightmare in which he was abducted by aliens, leading Stan, Kyle, and Chef to the conclusion that aliens inserted an anal probe in Cartman. As cows are mutilated in South Park, Cartman continues to live in denial of the alien machine residing in his anus... Other notable episodes from Season 1 include "An Elephant Makes Love to a Pig" in which Kyle's science project to cross-breed an elephant with a pig is made possible when Chef and Elton John create the necessary atmosphere for proper loving-making, and "Pink Eye" in which Kenny dies early in the episode but is turned into a zombie by accident...

I keep gettign sucked into Scott Baio is 46 ... and pregnant?

when I could be watching something better like the Simpsons ... why can't I escape VH1 Celebreality? If it isn't Scott Baio it is Brett Micheals and his plastic whores, or New York and her gigantic tits ... Who else is hooked by VH1?

I am hooked.

After watching last season of Rock of Love I felt for Brett. I thought he really wanted love. The first show of season 2 was enough to show me that he just wants some money, publicity and more single fun. That is all fine but I don't believe that he is looking for the one any more.

I love New York is just so horrible I had to watch. She is either the most delusioned woman on earth or she puts on a great act.

Scott Baio, he is very selfish and immature. Just proof of what having success, fame and every one around you bending to your every whim will do to a person. Hopefully he has grown up now that he really is a father.

I am so glad that I am not the only one that is hooked by this stuff.

An old crush returns in Swiss comedy, `Will You Marry Us'
If a long-lost, unrequited crush has orbited back into your life, you can relate to the plight of Rahel. She lives in a postcard-perfect Swiss town, but she's miserable. By day she's a civil registrar (kind of a justice of the peace), joining wide-eyed couples in matrimony. By night she stews about her inattentive husband and disengaged teenage son.
