Autumn Journey is a filmed portrait of the life and work of the great German baritone, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, one of the great musical giants of the 20th century. Along with Richter, Oistrakh, Menuhin, Rostropovich, Casals and Callas, he represents a truly golden era of great artists, not only remembered for their extraordinary live performances, but whose musicianship has also left to the world an unrivalled legacy of recordings.Filmed on the occasion of his 70th birthday, Fischer-Dieskau reveals for the first time many of the secrets of his outstanding success. This lovely CD features Renée Fleming singing religious music in an unaffected, lovely manner. Many favorites are here: both the Bach/Gounod and Schubert versions of "Ave Maria," each offered with long breaths and soft tone; "Rejoice Greatly" from Messiah, delivered with virtuosity and gleaming sound, and "He Shall Feed His Flock," also from Messiah, sung in a smooth, laid-back manner. Bits of the Fauré Requiem and Poulenc Gloria are welcome, as is the gorgeous "L'Adieu des Bergers" from L'Enfance du Christ. In the prayer from Humperdinck's Hansel und Gretel, Fleming is joined by the splendid Susan Graham, and a version of "Amazing Grace" features Mark O'Connor on violin. Two excerpts from Mozart's Mass in C Minor, pieces by Reger and Franck, and a few surprises round out this devotional CD. --Robert Levine

With the founding of the Shubert Organization some ninety years ago, the Shubert brothers set the stage for Broadway as we know it today. Indeed, their name has become virtually synonymous with the Great White Way. The heart of Manhattan's theatre district--Forty-forth and Forty-fifth Streets between Broadway and Eighth Avenue--is lined with monuments to their extraordinary careers, including the Imperial, Majestic, Booth, Plymouth, and Broadhurst theatres and, of course, Shubert Alley itself. Legendary for their eccentric behavior and their uncanny ability to turn a profit even during the industry's toughest times, the Shuberts are part and parcel of Broadway's colorful lore. In The Shuberts of Broadway, Brooks McNamara combs the holdings of the newly created Shubert Archive--a remarkable collection of some four million papers, playbills, architectural plans, photographs, press clips, scripts, costume designs, letters, and other Shubert memorabilia--to re-create the lives of Sam, Lee, and J. J. Shubert. In lively prose and more than 200 fully captioned illustrations, McNamara follows the Shuberts from their early years, when the teen-aged Sam became head of the box office at the Wieting Theatre in downtown Syracuse, through the building of their empire and the Broadway boom of the 1920s (when the Shuberts owned or operated 104 theatres and booked nearly a thousand more), and on to their last days, when their producing careers ended amid controversy. We see the often-stormy relations among the frail, charismatic Sam (who died in a train crash in 1905), the aloof Lee (dubbed "The Wooden Indian"), and their mercurial brother J.J., and their collective, continual battle against the Syndicate that dominated the theatre scene. Here we learn the real stories behind the popular entertainment that rolled off their theatrical assembly line and earned them fame: La Belle Paree, which featured Al Jolson at the Winter Garden; The Passing Show, a "girlie" revue that was full of such talents as Ed Wynn, Fred and Adele Astaire, George Jessel, and a chorus girl named Lucille Le Sueur, who later became known as Joan Crawford; Blossom Time, one of operetta's greatest hits; and The Student Prince, a theatrical bonanza composed by the great Sigmund Romberg. Filled with real-life plots, intrigues, and characters that capture the imagination, the story of the Shuberts is every bit as entertaining as the Broadway they helped to create.

Vienna: City Of The Arts
On the banks of the Danube, Vienna and its population of over 2 million people bask proudly in their cultural heritage. Vienna's love affair with the arts stretches back centuries and helped make it today, Austria's number one tourist attraction.
A romantic imperial city, Vienna bears the hallmarks of a capital steeped in history, beautifully contrasted by its modern infrastructure.
A city of music, Vienna was home to some of history's greatest composers. Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Strauss were all proud to call Vienna their home.
Vienna's musical heritage has been preserved to the present day. The Vienna Boys Choir is ever popular and the Wiener Philharmoniker remains a world class orchestra.
But it's not all about classical music. Vienna boasts a vibrant nightlife that compares with the best, catering for folks of all ages, young and old.
Historically a city of culture, Vienna boasts many talents amongst its repertoire. Whatever the time of year, you can be certain the city has plenty to offer.
A theatre break is always a rewarding experience; witness the latest film and dance productions or just sit back and soak up the best of classical opera. A vast array of concerts and exhibitions are held throughout the year.
If you just want to relax and idly watch the world go by then make a beeline for one of Vienna's many coffee houses. Take the weight off your feet and exchange thoughts of the day with your fellow coffee connoisseurs.
For those in need of something a little stronger, a visit to one of the city's wine taverns will have you unwinding in no time.
Right through history, Vienna has embraced the world of art and proudly boasts many of its own world famous artists. Through the centuries, kings and queens of Austria were passionate art collectors, rendering Austria - and Vienna in particular - a treasure trove of fine art.
Many of these masterpieces can be seen at the Museum of Fine Arts; a magnificent building exhibiting works from across the world, in particular that of its favourite sons.
Indeed, art and literature feature predominately during Vienna's history. Underground railway stations designed by Otto Wagner are listed properties; coffee house literature is digested by both young and old.
Wherever you stay in Vienna, historical landmarks are never far, many dating back to medieval times.
Set in beautiful grounds, Belvedere Palace is a magnificent example of Viennese architecture. Designed by the famous Baroque architect Von Hildebrandt, the fabulous palace was originally built for Prince Eugene of Savoy.
Besides their love of the arts, the Viennese love to shop. Markets are scattered throughout Vienna but most popular is the Naschmarkt. Dating back to the 16th century, everything from children's shoes to apples can be purchased. If you can endure the crowds, bargains are aplenty.
Indulge in the fun and games at the Prater, Vienna's biggest funfair. If the noise and crowds become too much, escape to the open fields or take a stroll through the adjacent forest and chill out with the wildlife.
For spectacular views of the city head for the Danube Tower, known locally as the Concrete Needle. The tower is over 350 meters high; with your head in the clouds, Vienna never looked so good.

I heard that there is a particular seat at SPAMALOT?
I heard that there is a particular seat in the audience at Spamalot on Broadway where the person sitting there gets to participate in the show. It is at the Schubert theatre, and I think it s somewhere in the orchestra on the right? Does anyone know which seat it is and what happens? I want to take a friend for his birthday, and is a huge Monty Python Fan. Thanks for your help!
Haha, they change it every show, I believe. I saw the show in NY, and they picked a man in the second row, house right.
