For those of us who grew up in the '70s, this drive-in compilation of '50s and '60s rock and doo-wop, complete with Wolfman Jack introductions, was our introduction to this music. There are 41 jukebox hits here, and every one of them is a classic of its time (although two tracks--"At the Hop" and "She's so Fine" are covers by the revival band Flash Cadillac & the Continental Kids). In his 1973 movie, director George Lucas used the music (and the presence of mysterious deejay Wolfman) as the AM-radio soundtrack to one night in suburban California, 1962. The idea was to capture and sustain an end-of-summer, end-of-innocence mood that's in the air throughout the picture-- not as a shortcut to establishing a period (as in Robert Zemeckis'Forrest Gump). There's an awful lot of spontaneous energy in these tunes--from Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly, to the Platters and the Clovers and the Del-Vikings, to the Crests and the Beach Boys--and also just a hint of melancholy that goes down very nicely with a burger, shake, and fries. --Jim Emerson

When life throws you curveballs, lemons, or closed doors, there's just one solution: Dance! Step Up 2 The Streets is a worthy entry into the inspirational dance-it-out film lexicon, with moves, choreography, and music that sometimes seem to defy even gravity. The spunky young heroine is Andie, played with sass and amazing dance talent by Briana Evigan (daughter of hardworking TV actor Greg Evigan). Andie's from one of Baltimore's grittiest neighborhoods, but her dance ability--forged in fire on the streets of Baltimore--lands her in a prestigious performing arts school, where she struggles to fit in even as her schoolmates are awed by her talent. With a nod to Love Story, our working-class heroine catches the eye of a privileged boy, Chase (Robert Hoffman), who's captivated by Andie's dance chops and genuine heart. Andie's fierce sense of self helps ground the film. At one point she lectures Chase, "Look, the streets is about where you're from. It's not some school talent show. There's no spring floors. There's no spotlights!" But the true star of the film is its amazing dance sequences, and the talented cast works the moves for all they're worth. The supercharged soundtrack features Plies (with Akon) and a couple of excellent Missy Elliott tracks. Ready? Hit it! --A.T. Hurley
Return to the Maryland School of the Arts for this rousing sequel that follows another group of talented and troubled teens. After a beautiful street dance gang member enters the prestigious institution, her old friends turn their back on her. But when she and a handsome classmate form a new crew, they prepare to prove themselves in a dance-off. Briana Evigan, Robert Hoffman, Adam G. Sevani star; with a cameo by Channing Tatum. 94 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks: English 5.1 Uncompressed, Dolby Digital 5.1, French Dolby Digital 5.1, Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English (SDH), French, Spanish; deleted scenes; featurettes; "making of" documentary; music videos.

From 1973 to 1985, a generation of kids watching Saturday morning television learned the function of conjunctions and the preamble to the U.S. Constitution with the help of an animated series called Schoolhouse Rock! The brainchild of executives at McCaffrey and McCall Advertising, the three-minute segments combined whimsical cartoons with catchy music (rock was only one of the styles) to help kids learn seemingly dry topics as easily as they could learn popular songs. Multiplication Rock tackles the multiplication tables, covering numbers 0 through 12 (but not 1 or 10), and chances are few people who grew up watching can multiply by 3 or 5 without hearing the familiar voice of composer-singer Bob Dorough. Other underlying talent included jazz drummer Grady Tate ("I Got Six," "Naughty Number Nine") and jazz pianist Blossom Dearie ("Figure Eight"), who contributed vocals. (Subsequent installments would feature many other jazz musicians and songs written by jazz pianist-composer Dave Frishberg and future Broadway composer Lynn Ahrens, who at the time was a fledgling secretary for McCaffrey and McCall.) Years later, the series was considered so hip that now-grown-up rock stars rerecorded the songs, and Multiplication Rock includes a music video of "Electricity, Electricity" by Goodness. --David Horiuchi
SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK takes children on a fantastic scholastic learning adventure. The same great songs you knew and loved as a kid are now available to a whole new generation. Learning multiplication tables is easy when you sing along with MULTIPLICATION ROCK. The film that officially signaled Disney's animation renaissance (following The Little Mermaid) and the only animated feature to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination, Beauty and the Beast remains the yardstick by which all other animated films should be measured. It relates the story of Belle, a bookworm with a dotty inventor for a father; when he inadvertently offends the Beast (a prince whose heart is too hard to love anyone besides himself), Belle boldly takes her father's place, imprisoned in the Beast's gloomy mansion. Naturally, Belle teaches the Beast to love. What makes this such a dazzler, besides the amazingly accomplished animation and the winning coterie of supporting characters (the Beast's mansion is overrun by quipping, dancing household items) is the array of beautiful and hilarious songs by composer Alan Menken and the late, lamented lyricist Howard Ashman. (The title song won the 1991 Best Song Oscar, and Menken's score scored a trophy as well.) The downright funniest song is "Gaston," a lout's paean to himself (including the immortal line, "I use antlers in all of my de-co-ra-ting"). "Be Our Guest" is transformed into an inspired Busby Berkeley homage. Since Ashman's passing, animated musicals haven't quite reached the same exhilarating level of wit, sophistication, and pure joy. --David Kronke --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

It's a good bet that any American kid growing up in the '70s or '80s learned some elementary lesson from the seminal musical series Schoolhouse Rock!. Airing from 1973 to 1984 (and often revived), the ABC Saturday morning shorts effortlessly introduced kids to grammar, science, multiplication, money, and American history--three minutes at a time. In one smart, comprehensive 2-disc set, all 46 songs and plenty of extras are collected. The four creators developed the series slowly, a welcome diversion from their advertising agency jobs, and ended up taking home four Emmys over the years. The background material includes 10 audio commentaries and a making-of feature for the new song, "I'm Gonna Send Your Vote to College." The DVD subtitle option is a great bonus for those who need to know every word from such favorites as "Three Is a Magic Number," "Interjections," "I'm Just a Bill," and "Conjunction Junction." Here are some more information for School Musical:

"dancing Was Harder" on 'high School Musical' Sequel
Hype about High School Musical's sequel is fast rising, and many can't wait to see if could surpass the success of the first one. Rehearsals and filming of the second movie has started earlier This Year, and the stars of the movie are working hard to give their best.
"We all kind of pulled out all the stops," Monique Coleman said in a conversation with The Hartford Courant last week. "All of us coming back to this one, recommitting ourselves to the project that helped us all attain our successes, it's an expression of gratitude to the Disney Channel for making us superstars."
Coleman added that after the brilliant success of the first High School Musical, they are all aware that "he stakes were higher, and the bar was definitely raised" this time around.
The 26 year old actress portrays Taylor McKessie on the film, East High Science Club Leader and friend of Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Anne Hudgens). Her other television credits include The Reading Room, Boston Public, Gilmore Girls, Veronica Mars and The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.
22 year old Lucas Grabeel also told The Hartford Courant that this time, the musical numbers and dance moves were definitely harder than ever.
"It was a lot harder regarding technical things we do," said Grabeel. "The dancing was harder, the music more challenging… every character is involved more."
In the sequel of the Disney hit, Lucas Grabeel reprises his role as Ryan Evans, the slightly better half of his fraternal twin sister, Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale). His other acting credits include Boston Legal, Veronica Mars, 'Til Death and Alice.
The first movie was more focused on the blossoming relationship between the two main characters played by Vanessa Anne Hudgens and Zac Efron. This time, however, Lucas Grabeel said that fans can expect to see more input from the other characters in the foreground in the much awaited sequel.
"The first High School Musical was much more about Troy [Zac Efron] and Gabriella -- her struggling with her new school and his struggle choosing between basketball and singing," Grabeel said. "This one is more about a group of people."
But despite the raised expectations, the actors and actresses of the show still had a lot of fun in the creation of the sequel, Monique Coleman said.
"I think there is an idea people have about what they expect from this movie," said Coleman. "I feel proud of the fact we didn't fall into the trap of allowing ourselves into being pressured into anything other than having a fantastic time."
