Rudy: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Although it received no awards, Jerry Goldsmith's music for this endearing football drama is his most-heard work after Patton. Goldsmith reteamed with the filmmakers of Hoosiers for this similar true-life account of a sports underdog, in this case pint-size Rudy Ruettiger, who dreamed of playing for Notre Dame. Goldsmith is at his best finding the rhythmic Middle America, and the "Tryouts" track illustrates Goldsmith's playful variations of a common movie theme. The fully orchestrated, grandstanding finale is a stirring piece of music that inspires in its own right. These building themes--with a motif of Western movie flair--have made this soundtrack well known, but not connected with the film. Numerous studios have used the score for coming-attraction trailers (including the seemingly passive Good Will Hunting). The full soundtrack is well worth having versus just hearing the oft-used bits. --Doug Thomas

The Wild Bunch - The Original Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)
List Price: $19.97

Here's how director Sam Peckinpah described his motivation behind The Wild Bunch at the time of the film's 1969 release: "I was trying to tell a simple story about bad men in changing times. The Wild Bunch is simply what happens when killers go to Mexico. The strange thing is you feel a great sense of loss when these killers reach the end of the line." All of these statements are true, but they don't begin to cover the impact that Peckinpah's film had on the evolution of American movies. Now the film is most widely recognized as a milestone event in the escalation of screen violence, but that's a label of limited perspective. Of course, Peckinpah's bloody climactic gunfight became a masterfully directed, photographed, and edited ballet of graphic violence that transcended the conventional Western and moved into a slow-motion realm of pure cinematic intensity. But the film--surely one of the greatest Westerns ever made--is also a richly thematic tale of, as Peckinpah said, "bad men in changing times." The year is 1913 and the fading band of thieves known as the Wild Bunch (led by William Holden as Pike) decide to pull one last job before retirement. But an ambush foils their plans, and Peckinpah's film becomes an epic yet intimate tale of betrayed loyalties, tenacious rivalry, and the bunch's dogged determination to maintain their fading code of honor among thieves. The 144-minute director's cut enhances the theme of male bonding that recurs in many of Peckinpah's films, restoring deleted scenes to deepen the viewer's understanding of the friendship turned rivalry between Pike and his former friend Deke Thornton (Robert Ryan), who now leads a posse in pursuit of the bunch, a dimension that adds resonance to an already classic American film. The Wild Bunch is a masterpiece that should not be defined strictly in terms of its violence, but as a story of mythic proportion, brimming with rich characters and dialogue and the bittersweet irony of outlaw traditions on the wane. --Jeff Shannon
In the Southwest of 1913, a gang of outlaws is coerced by a Mexican general into robbing a U.S. Army gun shipment, a move that has fatal consequences. William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Warren Oates, Edmond O'Brien, and Robert Ryan star in this masterpiece from Sam Peckinpah, known for its bloody and balletic action scenes. 145 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, French Dolby Digital Surround stereo; Subtitles: English, French, Spanish; audio commentary; theatrical trailers; deleted scenes; documentaries. Two-disc set.

Good Luck Chuck (Unrated Widescreen Edition)
List Price: $14.98
Sale Price: $2.77

In a perfect world, Good Luck Chuck would've captured the humor of Superbad and the raunch of the American Pie films. But what we're left with, instead, is a raunchy film with an anemic storyline. Cursed as a child with a hex that prevents him from finding true love, Charlie "Chuck" Logan (Dane Cook) finds that the women he dates find the men of their dreams immediately after they've dumped him. For a guy who enjoys dating beautiful women, it doesn't seem like such a horrible thing. But then he meets and falls for beautiful and klutzy Cam Wexler (Jessica Alba). Charlie wants to have a meaningful relationship with her, but how can he make her fall in love with him without losing her to some unknown man waiting to sweep her off her feet? Good Luck Chuck isn't an original movie; Cook and Alba make for an attractive couple that exudes warm chemistry. And Alba proves that while she may be famous for her body, she's quite adept at physical comedy. Dan Fogler doesn't fare as well. He has the thankless role of playing Charlie's obnoxious best friend Stu, a borderline perv plastic surgeon who proudly displays a set of Pamela Anderson's breast implants in his office (which, coincidentally enough, is located right next door to Charlie's). The dialogue is crass and the direction is all over the place. Everything is played for laughs, but little actually is very funny in this comedy. This movie actually could've used a bit more good luck. And lots more wit. --Jae-Ha Kim
Raunchy comedy stars Dane Cook as Charlie, a lovelorn dentist who acts as a good luck charm for women who sleep with him--and subsequently find true love with other men. Spending his time working and hanging out with his plastic surgeon best friend Stu (Dan Fogler), he falls for clumsy aquarium employee Cam (Jessica Alba). But can Charlie turn his own bad romantic love around and win her heart? With Michelle Harrison, Ellia English. Unrated version; 101 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1 EX , Dolby Digital stereo; Subtitles: English, Spanish; audio commentary by Cook, others; featurettes; gag reel; deleted scenes; alternate scenes; more.

The first in a new Legenda Film Studies series, Rohdie's essay examines the relationship between three key theoretical concepts in film history - classicism, montage and mise-en-scene - showing how each one concerns the problem of modernism and the link between cinema and the other arts. The author concentrates on a range of directors: Cocteau, Rossellini, Visconti, Pasolini, Godard, Rivette and Cassavetes whose works, in different ways, involved cinema with theatre, lyric opera, poetry, music and painting. Merging pages that have been cut once a script is locked is also a snap. With new how-to tutorials, you have step-by-step instructions on how to merge pages without affecting your overall page count. Final Draft also includes standard revision colors in each film and television template. Title Page, Cast Pages and Locations Pages Cover pages come pre-formatted for industry standards All of the Final Draft Television Templates come pre-set with easy-to-use information for each series such as the specific cast list and typical sets/locations. Our Standard One-Hour and Half-Hour Templates will also help you get started on pilots by providing what information should appear in the finished product. The added bonus is that the Title Page uses its own numbering for tracking the following pages so it won't add to your overall page count. Use the ScriptNotes Report to get a quick scan of all the notes in your script based on each scene and page. The Statistics Report will allow you to track daily writing goals by displaying how many words you've written along with details on the types of elements you used and what percentage of the script they make up. Here are some more information for Scene Montage:

The Importance of Sound Effects
Sound Effects are present in almost every media that you see and hear on a daily basis. From television, movies, and shorts to web sites, and digital music sound effects help tie the pieces together for your brain to understand. Their importance can easily be measured by their absence, when our minds quickly pick out the inconsistency.
Our brains rarely just think on one sense. Most often several of our senses make up the contents of every moment in our perceived time. We see a gun, we watch it fire, but if we don't hear the gunshot we feel that the experience is somehow broken, fake, or just doesn't make any sense.
This is why good quality sound effects can come in very handy. Having the exact right sound for your images can be crucial in getting your audience to become completely engulfed in the experience. Sometimes the sounds can be isolated or symbolic, like the ceiling fan in the beginning of "Apocalypse Now". Much of the other sound effects are removed to focus on the ceiling fan, which is a combination of blades moving quickly past the microphone, and the blades of a helicopter. The symbolism here is that the whirling blades of the fan are reminding Capt. Willard of the call of the jungle.
Sometimes the sounds are a little more collaborative and are mixed together to make a scene sound realistic. Sounds of leather coat, mixed with the jingle of change in the pockets, laid over the sound of a busy airport can create the unconsciously expected realism that your brain is expecting.
But you'll never get lucky enough to find a prefabricated sound byte that has everything you need laid into it at exactly the right time. That's why clean, individual sounds are vitally necessary to create the feel that you'll need. In this way you can mix and match a multitude of various sounds together to create completely new sounds, or a series of orchestrated sounds that complete a collage.
Montage theory (at least one of its aspects) employs juxtaposition of images in order to create new meaning. For example: Show a black and white picture of a sad looking old man, and then show a picture of an empty bowl. Most often our brains put the images together and tell us "this old man is starving". When in reality the two images have nothing to do with one another. The same thing holds true for sounds, especially when they are blended with images. An obviously imaginary bolt of magic blasts out of a character's fingertips, we hear some burning lightening magic sound, and suddenly we are immersed in pure fantasy; believing that this person is really able to shoot magic from their fingertips. The icing on the cake, the thing that sells it, is the sound.
The importance of sound in your production is paramount. Cheap sounds pull your audience out of the realism of the experience. This is why High Quality sounds should be collected at any price. Good well made sound effects will pay for themselves, though they'll never make their financial contribution known. It all comes down to the final product. Does it immerse your audience? If not then maybe some tweaking and enhancement of your sound is exactly what's missing.

what happened to vincent donofrio on law and order:criminal intent?
One of the new shows just started and in the final scene of the montage, just erbe, bogosian and goldblum were seen wall king toward the camera. anyone know what gives? i'm a real fan of his.
I have been all over the web and on alot of CI message boards that say that he IS coming back for a 9th season of CI, but that he will be faded out of the series, I think, because he wants to move on.
Apparently he did renew his contract with CI for another year, but it is not clear for how may of the 16 episodes he will be in.
