airgun silencer?
i want to build a homemade silencer for my rifle. I want to do something better than a bottle at the end. PVC maybe?
They are not hard to make. Just make them the same as a 22 caliber rifle silencer but use PVC instead of aluminum or steel.
Here is the bad part if you live in the USA. Since 1934 the National Firearms act has restricted silencer ownership to those who pay a $200 tax and obtain the tax stamp from the ATF. While the ATF routinely approves applications for the tax stamp, only 35 states allow unlicensed civilians to own silencers. There is no license or permit required, just the tax stamp. Here is a good article on air gun silencers. It is accurate except for where is says a “permit” (should say tax stamp) is hard to get. http://www.beemans.net/silencers_on_airguns.htm Every time I have applied for a tax stamp with an ATF from 1, it has been approved.
A silencer merely consists of a tube with baffles in it. The best baffles have a cone shape, but washer type baffles will be fine for an air rifle. For drawings and pictures of silencers, check out http://www.silencertests.com see http://www.subguns.com for ATF forms. You can legally use an empty soda bottle on an air rifle, but it is only legal if you apply for and get the tax stamp. A soda bottle or anything obstructing the muzzle will work poorly.
