Music Composed and Conducted by Stu Phillips Theme Composed by Stu Phillips and Glen A. Larson. FSM continues its unprecedented release of television soundtracks with Knight Rider, the hit NBC series which ran from 1982 to 1986. Knight Rider starred David Hasselhoff as a lone crusader armed with "Kitt," the world's most sophisticated car -- a winning team that captured the imagination of television audiences. Knight Rider's memorable and groundbreaking main title theme was composed by Stu Phillips and series creator/producer Glen A. Larson (Battlestar Galactica). At the time keyboards were used mainly for effects or to supplement other instruments, so the Knight Rider theme was revolutionary in its sole use of keyboards and rhythm section, evoking Kitt's high technology and creating an instantly recognizable "groove" that has since been sampled by several hip hop artists.

Knight Rider - Season One Knight Rider - Season One
List Price: $29.98

"One man can make a difference," intones a dying millionaire--well, one man and a superduper car, backed with millions of dollars! Welcome to the deliciously ridiculous world of Knight Rider, the early '80s TV series that launched the career of David Hasselhoff and his magnificent coif (both later seen in the insanely popular Baywatch). After being shot in the face, detective Michael Long is revived as Michael Knight (Hasselhoff) and partnered with an indestructible talking car called K.I.T.T. (voiced by William Daniels). The duo travel around the country solving crimes--basically, it's The Lone Ranger with the car as Silver and Tonto combined. Supported by finicky British executive Devon Myles (Edward Mulhare) and sexy engineer Bonnie Barstow (Patricia McPherson), Knight and K.I.T.T. take on everything from motorcycle gangs to corporate crooks to K.I.T.T.'s own evil twin, K.A.R.R. Like any good cheese, Knight Rider has only grown more pungent with age. Decked out in alarming '80s fashions (check out that blue Members Only jacket in the pilot), earnestly spouting some of the worst dialogue in the history of television, the absurdly handsome Hasselhoff radiates the unique charisma that's made him a Teutonic cult figure. In addition to the 21 episodes of the first season, Knight Rider: Season One includes a 1991 TV movie, Knight Rider 2000, that tried to launch a revamped series set in the near future (lacking the cheerful touch of creator Glen Larson, the attempt sank into oblivion) and brief interview footage (including Hasselhoff describing when he read the original script: "It was glowing in my hands. This was gold.") It's unlikely this boxed set will appeal to anyone who didn't become a fan of the show at an impressionable age, but for those fans, Knight Rider: Season One is gold. --Bret Fetzer

All 21 episodes from the debut season--including the two-part pilot "Knight of the Phoenix," "Slammin' Sammy's Stunt Show Spectacular," "Trust Doesn't Rust," "Knight Moves," and "Short Notice"--are collected in a four-disc set. 19 3/4 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: French, Spanish; bonus film "Knight Rider 2000"; photo gallery; more. **21 episodes on 4 discs. 19 3/4 hrs.**

Knight Rider - Season One Knight Rider - Season One
List Price: $26.98
Sale Price: $27.72

The '80s television phenomenon Knight Rider, in which David Hasselhoff and his hair teamed up with an erudite wonder car named KITT to fight crime, has undergone a variety of stalled attempts at a revival over the years, with a number of TV movies and short-lived syndicated series that failed to capture the original's wisecracking and smooth-riding formula. Most successful, however, was 2008's big-budget (and nicely self-aware) revamp, in which the son of the original Michael Knight takes the driver's seat of KITT's latest incarnation, this time a nanotech-sporting Shelby Mustang (voiced by Val Kilmer) with all sorts of new whiz-bang junk in the trunk. Despite an onscreen benediction from the Hoff himself, the two-hour pilot movie admittedly clunks a bit, with a few too many cross-country trips and a lack of any real hissable villains. Things improve considerably once the regular series begins, however, as Man and Car face off against the likes of terrorist surfers, nitro-burning street racers, and many other evildoers equipped with a plethora of expendable, easily explodable vehicles. Formulaically enjoyable as these early bikini-intensive episodes often are, though, things really pick up mid-season, with a genuinely tense three-part story arc that ups the dramatic ante, makes some surprising alterations to the cast roster, and, most importantly, reintroduces KITT's ticked-off cyborg nemesis KARR. The lack of a second season brought an end to this late-blooming creative surge, unfortunately, but, overall, this remains a breezily escapist, slickly helmed revamp that manages to do its daddy proud. Any series that features both KITT morphing into a truck and comes up with a scientific reason for its human leads to strip down to their underwear within the first 10 minutes of its first episode is a show with a firm understanding of exactly what it is. Special features include cast and crew commentary on the pilot, a rather overproduced gag reel, and several featurettes about the original series that should keep gearheads briefly riveted. --Andrew Wright

Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: French, Spanish. **21 episodes on 3 discs. 19 1/2 hrs.**

No one in the 1980s had his finger on the pulse of gizmo-crazy adolescent boys like producer Glen Larson, creator of Battlestar Galactica and Manimal. But the peak of Larson's particular genius has to be Knight Rider, the love story of an absurdly handsome man and his absurdly indestructible car. Former detective Michael Knight (David Hasselhoff, later to achieve worldwide media dominance with Baywatch) zooms across the U.S. in K.I.T.T., a supercharged talking Trans Am with an impenetrable shell and the catty voice of William Daniels (St. Elsewhere). From the Las Vegas desert to the Louisiana bayou, Michael and K.I.T.T. solve crimes and help the downtrodden with the aid of a multi-million-dollar corporation run by dapper Devon Myles (Edward Mulhare) and mechanic/secretary/nanny April Curtis (Rebecca Holden, who took over from Patricia McPherson for the second season only). The first season was goofy camp from the start, but the second turned even more giddily ridiculous: K.I.T.T. developed supersensors, telekinesis, and the ability to drive on water; plots included amnesia, super attack helicopters, a desperately needed transplant for a sick girl, and a supremely cheesy evil-twin storyline featuring Garthe Knight, son of the multimillionaire who gave Michael his identity-changing facial surgery, played by Hasselhoff with a mustache, soul patch, and even more luxuriant hair. In one episode, Michael goes "undercover" as the lead singer of a rock band, allowing Hasselhoff to flaunt his beloved-in-Germany vocal stylings. Of special note is an episode featuring Geena Davis (future Oscar-winner for The Accidental Tourist) as the daughter of a cat burglar, perhaps the only episode with a love interest as cartoonishly good-looking as Hasselhoff himself. This is definitive trash television, the kind of empty calories that, for some viewers, are irresistibly tasty. For Knight Rider fans, Season Two is a feast. --Bret Fetzer Knight Rider--Season Two Trivia • Although David Hasselhoff plays both Michael and Garthe Knight in one of the episodes in this season, he is only credited on-screen for playing Michael. • For this season, Rebecca Holden plays April Curtis, KITT's new technician. She was brought in after Patricia McPherson (Bonnie) pushed the show's writers and producers to give her character more to do, possibly including a romance with Michael. Although April was not unpopular, many fans missed Bonnie and wrote in to ask for the character to return, which she eventually did at the start of the third season. • The writers were torn between two songs to use for Garthe Knight's theme - "Sympathy for the Devil" and "Gimme Shelter," both by the Rolling Stones. The episode uses "Gimme Shelter". • When avoiding pursuers, K.I.T.T. rotates its license plate, James Bond style, from KNIGHT to KNI 667. • The producers toyed with the idea of making K.I.T.T.'s water-driving ability a reoccurring function, but it was dropped due to it proving to costly.

Inside Kitt, the Knight Industries Two Thousand

KITT is a fictional artificial intelligence built into a black Pontiac Trans Am in the popular Knight Rider TV series, which ran between September 26, 1982, and August 8, 1986 starring David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight.

The KITT AI was originally created by Wilton Knight, a brilliant but eccentric billionaire, and then used by the U.S. government. The artificial intelligence relied an a Knight 2000 microprocessor which was the center of a "self-aware" cybernetic logic module that allowed KITT to think, learn, communicate and interact with humans. It was first installed in a mainframe computer in Washington D.C.. Later on, Wilton Knight modified the computer system and implemented it into a Pontiac car to be used by his own association, the Foundation for Law and Government.

The car featured an Anamorphic Equalizer which allowed KITT to see, visible as a red scan-bar on the front of the car. The fiber-optic array of electronic eyes could see in all visual wavelengths as well as X-Ray and infrared. An Etymotic Equalizer allowed him to hear and his voice synthesizer allowed him to speak in english, french and spanish, and also to simulate other sounds. Furthermore he could smell using an atmospheric sampling device.

Neither the Knight 2000 CPU clock nor the exact amount of memory of the KITT AI are known. The AI supercomputer used the so-called Alpha Circuit to drive the Pontiac, which can be disabled to run the car in "manual override" mode. The entire AI can also be shut down using a hidden switch and setting dial under the dash.

KITT was also able to drive the car by himself, even better than any human could. It also offered a lot of gimmicks such the Turbo Boost (which allows to jump over obstaclesby quickly accelerating to speeds in excess of 200 mph), a "Tri-Helical Plasteel 1000 Molecular Bonded Shell" armored plating which resists weapon fire as well as the "Super Pursuit Mode" which was added at a later stage.

Most features could be activated automatically by KITT or manually be the driver, using a multitude of buttons and panels in the cockpit - and it had LOTS of features, so here's just a basic list: police lights and a siren, a grappling hook and winch, a parachute, it could leak oil onto the road or produce smoke, it had a flame thrower, a tear gas launcher, ultramagnesium charges to divert heat-seeking missiles, traction spikes, a microwave jammer, tracking systems, an onboard laser powerpack, a bomb sniffer, a medical scanner, deflatable tires, self-tinting windows, a voice stress analyzer, a rotating license plate, a seat ejection system and much more (the entire list would be just too long).

SO much for KITT – the famous talking car from the 1980s hit series Knight Rider – being pure science fiction.
