The BBC's lavish, glowingly designed adaptation of Mervyn Peake's eccentrically brilliant novels Titus Groan and Gormenghast is a triumph of casting. Ian Richardson's Lear-like depiction of the mad earl of a remote, vast, ritual-obsessed building is matched by the brutal pragmatism of Celia Imrie as his wife, the synchronized madness of Zoë Wanamaker and Lynsey Baxter as his twin sisters, and the duplicitous charm of Jonathan Rhys-Meyers as Steerpike, the kitchen-boy determined to take over no matter how many deaths it costs. John Sessions is surprisingly touching as Prunesquallor, the family doctor who realizes almost too late what Steerpike intends. It is always tricky to film a book dear to the hearts of its admirers. Wilson and his design team achieve a look rather more pre-Raphaelite than Peake's own illustrations--shabby velvets, garish sunlight, and dank, stone passages. The score by Richard Rodney Bennett is full of attractive surprises--fanfares and waltzes and apotheoses--and John Tavener's choral additions are plausibly parts of the immemorial ritual of Gormenghast. --Roz Kaveney
Award-winning screenwriter Malcolm McKay (The Interrogation of John, A Wanted Man) bringimaginative trilogy, The Gormenghast Novels, to life in this lavish fantasy miniseries with the high production values characteristic of BBC drama. Gormenghast has been described as a metaphor for the fall of an empire, the passing of an age and the rise of fascism. The story revolves around the ancient family of Groan and the glorious castle of Gormenghast, and focuses on the heir to the powerful dynasty, Titus, and a witty, power-hungry, kitchen boy Steerpike, who battle for decades to determine the fate of the castle. As Steerpike charms his way into the homes and hearts of the castle inhabitants, it is Titus who ultimately stands in his way as he iChristopher Lee (Sleepy Hollow, Dracula) afaithful retainer, and Steven Fry (narrator of the Harry Potter film).s Flay, Lord Groans forced to defend his birthright to the castle. Who will rule Gormenghast? Featuring top billed actors, this epic fantasy has a cast list that includes Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Titus, Velvet Goldmine) as the evil Steerpike, Ian Richardson (House of Cards) as Tituss Mervyn Peake

Bend It Like Beckham is true girl power. This glorious comedy centers on Jess (Parminder Nagra), an Indian girl born in England whose only desire is to become a football--or, as we say on this side of the Atlantic, soccer--star like her idol, David Beckham; but her traditional family refuses to even consider it. With the help of her new friend Juliet (Keira Knightley), Jess secretly joins a girls' team under the guidance of a male coach (Jonathan Rhys Meyers). As the team starts to gain some attention, Jess's secret can't be kept forever. The story of Bend It Like Beckham is so genuine and detailed that it transcends all the sports-movie formulas that it also fulfills with cheeky exuberance. Wonderfully acted, and written and directed with loving care by Gurinder Chadha (Bhaji on the Beach, What's Cooking?), this movie is pure delight from start to finish. --Bret Fetzer

Considered by many to be Shakespeare's worst play, Titus Andronicus is a bloodthirsty tragedy full of villainous heroes and bottomless revenge--hardly the stuff of big-screen directorial debuts, it would seem. Yet Julie Taymor dives headfirst into moviemaking with Titus, a spectacular adaptation that manages to find beauty and humor in the piles of carnage. The story begins simply enough by Shakespearean standards: celebrated Roman warrior Titus Andronicus (Anthony Hopkins) returns from a hard-won victory to bury his slain sons and avenge their deaths by killing the eldest son of his enemy, Tamora, queen of the Goths (Jessica Lange). Tamora responds by seducing the impressionable new emperor and setting all of Rome into a downward spiral of revenge, madness, and death. Taymor, who won a Tony for her Broadway production of The Lion King, throws all her theatrical sensibilities at the story--armies are exquisitely choreographed, blood is shed so beautifully that it hardly seems real, and characters are costumed in symbolic combinations of ancient Roman and 20th-century garb. She plays up the dark comedy at every opportunity, lending a carnival flavor to the story's most gruesome moments. Excellent performances from Hopkins (whose deranged Titus is more than a little reminiscent of Hannibal Lecter), Lange, and the supporting cast help make the endless treachery credible. --Claire Campbell

Who knew Jonathan Rhys Meyers had such an aching, lovely croon? In August Rush, he supplies his own vocals in the role of an Irish indie-rock singer, and it's a testament to his skill that he doesn't embarrass himself on Van Morrison's "Moondance." (He's even better on Lucas Reynolds' "Something Inside.") This is fairly representative of this CD's flavor: thoughtful, adult but not bland--typically, you hear a lot of cello throughout. John Ondrasik, stepping out from his Five for Fighting persona, wrote new material, though the best song, "King of the Earth," is an unreleased one by his main project that boasts superb, elegant production by Bill Bottrell. Intriguingly, guitar virtuoso Kaki King is the hand double for Freddie Highmore, who plays the film's child prodigy. Her two instrumentals, "Bari Improv" and "Ritual Dance," are treats for lovers of inventive acoustic playing, who should also enjoy the self-explanatory "Dueling Guitars." John Legend sounds aching on "Someday," though the cover of "God Bless the Child," by Chris Botti and Paula Cole, feels a little lite. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Elvis: The Mini-Series

Elvis: The Miniseries was produced with the cooperation of the Presley empire, and it shows: this 173-minute opus uses Elvis's original recordings and real Graceland locations. The official imprimatur might also account for the movie's emphasis on the good years: what we get here is the early rise to fame, the Army interlude, then a run through the increasingly dispiriting movie career. It climaxes with the 1968 comeback TV special, leaving Elvis's addled final decade undetailed (but foreshadowed, to be sure). The story of the Mama-lovin' Tupelo boy who ascended to the throne of rock has been told so many times it has taken on the contours of Greek myth: we know everything that's coming, but we gain reassurance from hearing the familiar anecdotes anyway (and then Elvis and the boys started fooling around with "That's Alright, Mama" and Sam Phillips rolled the tape, etc.). In this telling of the myth, the villain is an easy find: it's Colonel Tom Parker, the big-talking and short-sighted manager who reaped big profits from Presley's movies but kept the King out of projects such as West Side Story. Randy Quaid gives the movie's best performance as the cunning Colonel. An intelligent script helps the movie over the episodic nature of biopics, and Camryn Manheim and Robert Patrick are nice casting as Elvis's parents. But the whole thing hinges on the central E-casting, and here Jonathan Rhys Meyers proves a mixed bag. He appears a little intimidated by the role, and never quite owns it, even if he's very good as the dewy, more-or-less innocent Elvis. Having to lip-synch to the original recordings makes Rhys Meyers look outmatched at times: how's that big sound coming out of that spindly guy? Kurt Russell's performance in John Carpenter's classic TV-movie remains the gold standard. This take on Elvis makes him out to be a pawn in a crazy game, rather than a self-directed musician with a very distinct vision of his own. --Robert Horton
Elvis Presley (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) lives again in this powerful telling of the King's life story. From the humble Mississippi origins to the white-hot career in movies and music, this miniseries draws from familiar and surprising elements of Elvis' life, such as his devotion to his mother (Camryn Manheim), romance with Ann-Margret (Rose McGowan), and stormy relations with "Colonel" Tom Parker (Randy Quaid). Robert Patrick, Antonia Bernath co-star. 173 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital Surround stereo.

Here are some more information for Rhys Meyers:

An outstanding season of the Tudors came to an end in June with the beheading of Queen Anne. Showtime has brought to viewers a television series that is beautifully crafted both in script and film.
The cast of this medieval series is dynamic with incredible acting skills. Jonathon Rhys Meyers as King Henry VIII does a magnificent job of bringing viewers into the world of Henry VIII. The scholar, Sir Thomas Moore, is played by Jeremy Northam. Henry Cavill plays Charles Brandon who held many posts in the royal household and was favored by Henry. Natalie Dormer plays Anne Boleyn, also known as Queen Anne and Henry VIII's second wife. Queen Katherine of Aragon, Henry VIII's first wife was played by Marie Doyle Kennedy. Diplomat and politician, Thomas Boleyn, was played by Nick Dunning while Thomas Cromwell was played by James Frain.
Each member of the cast of the Tudors did an incredible job of bringing history to reality. The range of acting and emotions shown in Queen Anne was portrayed masterfully by Natalie Dormer. The writers did a great job of alienating Anne Boleyn from the viewers as Queen Anne herself had been alienated by the people of England. Toward the end of the season Anne endeared herself to the viewers creating a likable character who many were sorry to see go at the end of the season. Natalie Dormer handled the execution of Queen Anne with grace and dignity as the true Queen Anne did during her time. The writers used almost the very same speech to the letter that Queen Anne gave on the scaffold bring reality to Showtime HD.
Season three of the Tudors will be premiering in high-definition on Showtime in 2009. Jonathan Rhys Meyers will be returning at King Henry VIII. Two newcomers to the series will be seen as the show will follow Henry as he marries Jane Seymour and Anne of Cleves. Showtime has promised that this season will be full of the intrigue and drama seen in the tudor lifestyle making this royal drama nothing short of extraordinary.
Showtime provides full 1080p high-definition programming for series and movies. Satellite TV offers three Showtime channels available in high-def including Showtime HD, Showtime 2 HD, and Showtime West HD. Showtime is known for their original series such as Weeds, The Tudors, and Brotherhood.
Stay tuned for Showtime while awaiting the release of the Tudors Seasons 3.
