CROW SHERYL DETOURS

Thematically, Detours may not seem like much of a detour to Sheryl Crow fans. Her politics pour out of these songs the way you might expect them to if you caught wind of her epic cross-country bus trip, with the activist Laurie David, to promote environmental awareness months prior to this release. From the quiet, faraway-sounding opener "God Bless This Mess"--a novel in a song--to the catchy but thought-provoking "Gasoline," it's clear that Crow has more on her mind these days than soaking up the sun or having a little fun, à la the Tuesday Night Music Club era. Yet there's not a groan-worthy song on this standout rock/pop/folk/blues album. If the themes are heavy (in addition to the political songs, there's an almost painfully tender lullaby for her son Wyatt and one, "Make It Go Away [Radiation Song]," that touches on her breast-cancer experience), the mood is cathartic, determined, hopeful at times and sad at others. "Now That You're Gone" grabs at clarity through the clouds of a devastating love affair and gets it, and "Peace Be Upon Us" picks apart pettiness and arrives at a wide-minded beauty. George Harrison seems present in some of these songs, especially the more personal ones ("Drunk with the Thought of You," "Love Is All There Is"). And that may be the highest compliment that Sheryl Crow, who seems to admire his gentle soul and shares his big heart, could ask for. --Tammy La Gorce

Bowie's SCARY MONSTERS & Costello's RADIO RADIO + Randy Newman, Eric Clapton, James Taylor etc.

Volume One of the Saturday Night Live: The Musical Performances is a lot like the show itself--some bits work, some don't. What works is Elvis Costello's infamous performance of "Radio Radio," a direct middle finger to those at his record label who insisted he perform the less controversial "Less Than Zero." Paul Simon's "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" is a faithful but even more delightful reading of his finest post-Garfunkel hour. The Grateful Dead's performance is noteworthy simply for the fact that it's the Dead. Other than that, Volume One is sorely dependent on showcasing rote readings of really famous pop songs. That's passable for newer artists like Jewel or the Dave Matthews Band, but even Eric Clapton sticks to playing the tired and sappy "Wonderful Tonight" in a performance some dozen-odd years after the song was a bona fide hit. --Jason Josephes

They're here, they're queer, and they make Sex and the City look like a demure tea party. Showtime's quintessentially American Queer As Folk--based on the British miniseries--pours on copious amounts of hot and steamy sex. This slick (and slickly entertaining) series shares the same basic concept as its British counterpart--centering on a group of gay friends living in a primarily industrial city--but after that, all bets are off. Whereas the British version focused on the gritty, realistic drama of its characters, the American QAF is a glossy, fun soap opera that occasionally tackles big issues but never lets you forget that life at times can be a party, and you shouldn't be one of those poor suckers starving to death. A good part of the show's charm lies in its cast--boy-next-door Michael (Hal Sparks), ruthlessly seductive rake Brian (Gale Harold), out-and-proud Emmett (Peter Paige), wallflower Ted (Scott Lowell), and nubile teen Justin (Randy Harrison)--who grew from standard gay prototypes to intriguing characters by the first season's end. And while some subplots didn't work (such as Emmett's farfetched foray into gay-conversion therapy), others were quietly affecting, including Brian's coping with his father's death. Some may object to the show's relentless fixation on sex (and gay men--there are just two lesbian characters), but this is a series that in its own polished way is both engrossingly fun and truly groundbreaking. It's liberating to watch an American TV series in which the straight world is only peripheral. Let's hear it for the boys! --Mark Englehart

The Serial Killer Letters: A Penetrating Look Inside the Minds of Murderers The Serial Killer Letters: A Penetrating Look Inside the Minds of Murderers
List Price: $26.95

For over three years Jennifer Furio, a young mother of two and a Sunday School teacher from Bellingham, Washington, corresponded with some of the most infamous serial killers of our time. While Furio did not intend to write a book when she first started writing to over 50 incarcerated and convicted killers, the responses she received from them were so fascinating and illuminating, she realized that she could not keep them to herself. She saw that these highly candid first-hand accounts revealed more about the inner workings of the minds of these criminals than anything she could say herself. Without question the first book about serial killers that is written by serial killers, this volume offers an entirely unique perspective on this most complex criminal and gives us a rare and intimate look into the minds of men responsible for some of the most heinous serial killings in recent history. This is the first time material of this kind has ever been made available. Each chapter, one for each killer, begins with a brief background and then the letters Furio received are transcribed and reproduced, exactly as they were written--unedited and uncensored. Admittedly, some of this is very chilling and disturbing reading. There are detailed descriptions of the atrocious crimes they committed (or vehemently claim they didn't commit), the depraved and sad lives they lived, their childhoods, their wives, their victims, their sexual preferences. Also included are many rare, never-before-seen crime scene and family photographs, artwork, reproductions of many of the actual letters and poems and other interesting documents. The book includes letters from Randall Woodfield, aka the I-5 killer, Robin Gecht and Edward Spreitzer of the Chicago Rippers, the prophetically named David Gore, Henry Lee Lucas, Harvy Carignan, Lawrence Bittaker, Roy Norris, Harrison T. Graham of Philadelphia, Jeff Libby, Douglas Clark and Bill Suff. The first book to provide case studies of this kind of criminal in the form of personal letters, The Serial Killer Letters is a major and pioneering addition to the psychological literature on serial killers and their crimes. By offering the actual words of the killers themselves, this book offers readers the opportunity to come to their own conclusions about what kind of people these men really are, what makes them tick and what turned them into human killing machines in the first place. In addition to true crime buffs, a wide variety of disciplines and professionals, including psychologists, criminologists, profilers, forensic psychologists, police and corrections personnel, will be grateful to have this unique opportunity to get an inside look at these most complex individuals.

If you are a fan of heavy metal music, you know how largely it depends on guitar riffs and solos for its existence. Guitar remains the central instrument of heavy metal music and cool guitar riffs are probably the most admired part of a performance. Here are some interesting facts about heavy metal guitar riffs which might help you to appreciate them even more.

For many years now heavy metal music has been critically vilified as an over simplistic and aggressive genre of music. The on stage violence and the showiness of the metal bands have added to the censure. However, there is no denying the fact that the guttural and the primal sounds of the metal guitar remain a popular form of protest against the consumerism and conformity of pop music. The metal guitar riffs are not meant to please, they are meant to express the anguish that results from our modern life style.

Many critics, without knowing the true facts about metal bands, dismiss all metal guitarists as gimmicky. They think that it is all about riffing involving three chords. However, it is a far cry from the truth. Metal guitarists have been leading innovators of many complicated guitar techniques. A good metal guitarist should also be technically sound and should be able to play at a great speed.

Much of the appeal of the heavy metal music depends upon the amplified distortion of the guitar licks. The very genre of the heavy metal music came to be distinguished by its powerful solos and speedy and powerful guitar riffs. In the 1960s, when the metal genre was coming slowly in to the forefront, it heavily depended upon the blues and the psychedelic versions of rock music. But what gradually distinguished it from the others, was the coming of age of the powerful guitar licks.

Therefore, the importance of the heavy metal guitar riffs cannot be undermined in the general growth and development of the metal music. If you really want to play them on your own, you should first work on your basic guitar techniques. Learning to play guitar licks and riffs like a pro will also require the knowledge of musical theory and guitar scales. There is quite a bit of hard work involved in attaining the status of a good metal guitar player. However, once you can manage to master them, there is nothing like the pleasure of playing a guitar like Kirk Hammett or Randy Rhoads.

New England Patriots Tickets - Defensive Woes

Add Tedy Bruschi to that long list of injured Patriots on the defensive side of the ball. Bruschi, a 13-year NFL veteran and New England Patriot since 1996, exited the Pats' game against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday in the fourth play of the second quarter, injuring his knee after a collision with teammate Mike Richardson left him on the ground. The standout linebacker flew back to Boston this week to undergo tests on his left knee, and this means that if nothing else Bruschi will miss next week's game against the Oakland Raiders (though probably more than just that game).

With Bruschi out, the Patriots' defense is getting smaller and smaller, and it has already been waning more every day as the season wears on. Left defensive end Ty Warren was out again this week for the second straight week in a row after suffering a groin injury, outside linebacker Pierre Woods is out with a broken jaw, safety Rodney Harrison has been out most of the season with a right quadriceps injury, linebacker Adalius Thomas is out with a broken arm and rookie cornerback Terrence Wheatley is also out with a broken left wrist, leaving the New England Patriots with one bruised and battered defense. New England signed former Patriot and 10-year NFL veteran Rosey Colvin last week in the wake of Thomas and Woods' injuries, and later that week signed another former player, Junior Seau, to their defensive lineup as well. The news of Seau's return to the Patriots is nothing but positive for New England, as the 39-year-old linebacker and former Pro Bowler will give the Patriots some of the depth and confidence the team's defense has been lacking for the last few weeks.

While the immediate future of linebacker Tedy Bruschi is yet unknown, the Patriots will continue using their offensive strength to overcome any deficits the team's defense might leave. Matt Cassel continues his hot streak on the offensive side while Randy Moss and Wes Welker both give the Pats' offense the little boost they've needed these last few weeks to slide past the Seahawks, Dolphins and Bills. As New England approaches the end of the regular season in games against the Raiders, Cardinals and Bills, however, Bruschi is one key player that may miss them all. No matter whether or not Bruschi returns this season, Patriots fans can get New England Patriots tickets from http://www.stubhub.com/new-england-patriots-tickets and cheer on the rest of the team as the Pats continue posting up wins in the regular season in search of a shot at the playoffs.

Bruschi, no stranger to playoffs and Super Bowl championships, has been loyal to the Patriots since 1996, when he was picked by New England in the third round of the NFL Draft out of Arizona. The star linebacker has averaged 112 tackles over the last five seasons, and he has led the Patriots in tackles for the last two seasons (with 124 in 2006 and 99 in 2007.) In his 12 seasons with New England, Bruschi has played in 22 playoff games and five Super Bowls, one of the highest of any player in the league.
