Intro

The all new Stylus Photo R1900 comes with the company's pigment-based UltraChrome Hi-Gloss ink set called the UltraChrome Hi-Gloss2. The new inks include an orange cartridge, printing slightly better skin tones.

Epson uses a new system called the Radiance Technology in the 1900, along with some grain reduction and smoother color transitions. The Stylus Photo R1900 comes with a very wide color gamut and does a great job, when it comes to printing colors. Transitions from one color to the next are very smooth for an inkjet printer - producing High Quality prints with excellent output.

Design and Features

The 1900 has a maximum print resolution of 5760x1440 dpi, a minimum ink droplet size of 1.5 picoliters and can print on CDs or DVDs. The printer holds both Photo Black and Matte Black cartridges and can switch between them automatically, based on the paper selected in the driver.

The MicroPiezo AMC print head is given a tweak with a coating that repels ink and maintains dot placement accuracy. In addition, there is a mist collection system that absorbs any excess ink when printing borderless.

There is no built-in Ethernet connection, but the 1900 provides two Hi-Speed USB 2.0 jacks on the back. With special software, you can connect the printer to the network.

The printer is 24.3 inches wide by 16.3 inches high by 31.4 inches deep, when the trays are extended.

The printer driver is easy to navigate, overall a very intuitive layout with explanation to the features over a mouse rollover.

Performance

The 1900 is on the slower side - printing a bordered 8x10-inch photo on letter-size (8.5x11-inch) paper took about 3 minutes and 28 seconds with the printer (instead of Photoshop) determining colors, quality set to Best (the top setting), high speed turned off, and the printer's Auto Photo Enhance feature turned on. Without enabling these options the printer took 1 minute and 21 seconds to print the same photo.
