Pink Floyd: The Wall (25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)
List Price: $17.98
Sale Price: $12.44

By any rational measure, Alan Parker's cinematic interpretation of Pink Floyd: The Wall is a glorious failure. Glorious because its imagery is hypnotically striking, frequently resonant, and superbly photographed by the gifted cinematographer Peter Biziou. And a failure because the entire exercise is hopelessly dour, loyal to the bleak themes and psychological torment of Roger Waters's great musical opus, and yet utterly devoid of the humor that Waters certainly found in his own material. Any attempt to visualize The Wall would be fraught with artistic danger, and Parker succumbs to his own self-importance, creating a film that's as fascinating as it is flawed. The film is, for better and worse, the fruit of three artists in conflict--Parker indulging himself, and Waters in league with designer Gerald Scarfe, whose brilliant animated sequences suggest that he should have directed and animated this film in its entirety. Fortunately, this clash of talent and ego does not prevent The Wall from being a mesmerizing film. Boomtown Rats frontman Bob Geldof (in his screen debut) is a fine choice to play Waters's alter ego--an alienated, "comfortably numb" rock star whose psychosis manifests itself as an emotional (and symbolically physical) wall between himself and the cold, cruel world. Weaving Waters's autobiographical details into his own jumbled vision, Parker ultimately fails to combine a narrative thread with experimental structure. It's a rich, bizarre, and often astonishing film that will continue to draw a following, but the real source of genius remains the music of Roger Waters. --Jeff Shannon
Based on Pink Floyd's hit album, this dazzling rock musical stars Bob Geldof as Pink, a rock star tortured by his past and descending into madness. His breakdown is represented by striking live-action and animated sequences and such Floyd songs as "Another Brick in the Wall," "Comfortably Numb," "Goodbye Blue Sky," "The Trial" and others. With Bob Hoskins, Christine Hargreaves; Alan Parker directs. 83 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital 5.1; documentary; photo gallery; theatrical trailer; movie poster.

The Dark Side Of The Moon
List Price: $18.99
Sale Price: $9.25

Dark Side of the Moon, originally released in 1973, is one of those albums that is discovered anew by each generation of rock listeners. This complex, often psychedelic music works very well because Pink Floyd doesn't rush anything; the songs are mainly slow to mid-tempo, with attention paid throughout to musical texture and mood. The sound effects on songs like "On the Run," "Time" and especially "Money" (with sampled sounds of clinking coins and cash registers turned into rhythmic accompaniment) are impressive, especially when we remember that 1973 was before the advent of digital recording techniques. This is probably Pink Floyd's best-known work, and it's an excellent place to start if you're new to the band. --Genevieve Williams

The opening track, "Teeth Like God's Shoeshine," explodes out of your speakers with sharp, see-sawing guitars and shouted vocals, an irresistible melange of angular rhythms and mighty, powerful dynamics. The rest of the songs are similarly pulled along by some unseen force, driven by an energy found in classic post-punk bands like Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 or Drunken Boat. Some reviewers have referenced the Pixies, and while that's not off the mark, this is more like the Pixies undergoing dental work--without anesthesia. --Lorry Fleming

Have Rocket, Will Travel is the first Three Stooges feature film after the team became television icons and Joe DeRita was called in to replace Joe Besser (who had replaced Shemp, who had replaced Curly). Aimed at a younger audience, it included a good deal of the physical violence their Snow White film tried to avoid. Curly Joe was given the old Curly shtick of being struck by a tool, exclaiming a painful "Oooo" and then giving a surprised reaction when the tool appears bent from the contact with his cement- like head. He is also prone to a weaker version of his role model's "Woowoowoo." The plot revolves around the team's accidental launch into space and their adventures on a Venus that looks identical to Earth, including breathable air but housing a giant tarantula that breathes fire and a unicorn that speaks slightly archaic English. There is also an unconvincing robot that is lonesome enough to create three fellow robots in the form of the three Earthlings. This leads merely to a routine already familiar to viewers of old-time comedies: a chase down a corridor lined with doors through which the six are exiting and reentering in a physically impossible way. The final sequence in which the returning "heroes" wreck a social event is overly familiar from the earlier films, especially the old "sofa spring stuck the rear" routine; and indeed it all seems tacked on to stretch the film to its 76 minutes. Light-comedy veteran Jerome Cowan does his best in a role that would have been handled by Jimmy Finlayson in a Laurel & Hardy film. It is good to hear the team sing the title and closing songs, but they add little to the film. Children will love this feature, but they must be advised that the eye-poking and hitting are all tricks not to be emulated. --Frank Behrens

The Mentalist: The Complete Third Season
List Price: $59.98
Sale Price: $18.54

Simon Baker's sly, sexy charm is a big reason The Mentalist is one of TV's most popular series. But Baker isn't the only appeal of this thoughtful, well-written, fast-paced crime drama. The Mentalist owes much more to Agatha Christie than to Law & Order or other contemporary police procedurals--because it focuses on Baker's character, Patrick Jane, using his brain and intuition to crack cases. Sure, there's the usual thorough police work done by Jane's California Bureau of Investigation team, led by the no-nonsense Agent Lisbon (the always appealing Robin Tunney). But Jane has gifts of observation that help profile, and capture, the bad guys preying on the good people around Sacramento. Jane is also pursuing his own specific demon: Red John, the evil serial killer who murdered Jane's family at the beginning of the series. It's a wonder that the folks in California aren't in a blind panic, given that this madman is still at large some three years later--but it's to The Mentalist's credit, and to its CBI in particular, that the story thread continues to be believable, and manageable from a crime-fighting perspective. The ensemble cast is stellar, including Tunney, who seems to be developing some deeper feelings for Jane. Other standouts include Tim Kang and Amanda Rhigetti, whose new romance with an FBI agent pummels the heart of her former flame, played by Owain Yeoman, and contains a potential landmine or two itself later in the season. But it's Baker's light, deft portrayal of a tortured genius who manages to keep a wry sense of humor that makes The Mentalist so compelling episode after episode. As always, the location shooting around Northern California is breathtaking. This boxed set includes a great documentary with interviews of professors and former law-enforcement officials at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, talking about how real serial-killer profiling is done--and applying it to the fictional Red John. And this season also features an episode directed by Simon Baker, with a commentary from him that is particularly crisp and entertaining. Crime-show fans will love The Mentalist, and so will those intrigued by the always-baffling puzzles of human behavior. --A.T. Hurley
All 24 episodes of the third season--including "Red Sky at Night," "Bloodsport," "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," "Rhapsody in Red," and the two-part "Strawberries & Cream"--are featured in a five-disc set. 17 hrs. total. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English (SDH), French, Spanish; featurettes; deleted scenes. **24 episodes on 5 discs. 17 hrs.**

Director Duncan Jones made a stellar first impression with 2009's Moon, a stylish, gratifyingly deep science-fiction movie that favored heart and soul over flashy special effects. Source Code, Jones's much anticipated follow-up, proves that his debut was far from a fluke, blending techno-thriller and character study with deceptive ease. Shot in a clean, no-frills fashion, Ben Ripley's script follows an MIA soldier (Jake Gyllenhaal) who awakes in a mysterious capsule, with contact with the outside world limited to a video feed from a shadowy military officer (the fantastically poker-faced Vera Farmiga). As events unfold, he learns that he's the participant in an experiment that lets him relive a stranger's past life in 8-minute chunks, a process that will hopefully allow him to avert the terrorist bombing of a packed commuter train. Jones, aided by Chris Brown's wonderfully overt '80s homage of a score, wrings an impressive amount of tension out of the constantly rewinding story, with each time jump revealing another small piece of the overall puzzle, as well as deepening the relationship between Gyllenhaal and fellow passenger Michelle Monaghan. Clocking in at a just-right 93 minutes, this is a funny, tense, and surprisingly moving film that perhaps never quite reaches the ingenuity that its premise suggests. If this counts as a sophomore slump, it's of an extremely mild, very entertaining variety. --Andrew Wright
Complex and futuristic tale stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a government agent working inside an experimental program that allows one's psyche to take over another person's body during the final eight minutes of their life. Assigned to identify the bomber of a train, he continues to wake up inside the body of the same passenger and must repeatedly experience the tragic incident until he can solve the mystery and save the woman (Michelle Monaghan) he's starting to fall for. Vera Farmiga and Jeffrey Wright co-star. 94 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English (SDH), Spanish; audio commentary; interviews; featurettes; trivia.

When the first wave of New Moon pictures were released, girls the world over shamelessly salivated over Taylor Lautner’s extremely buff body. And among the images released was this (see picture below) sexy solo shot of a topless Taylor but it turned out the fan-made poster was a fake!
