It's hard to believe Ridley Scott's handsome epic won't become the cinematic touchstone of the Crusades for years to come. Kingdom of Heaven is greater than the sum of its parts, delivering a vital, mostly engrossing tale following Balian (Orlando Bloom), a lonely French blacksmith who discovers he's a noble heir and takes his father's (Liam Neeson) place in the center of the universe circa 1184: Jerusalem. Here, grand battles and backdoor politics are key as Scott and first-time screenwriter William Monahan fashion an excellent storyline to tackle the centuries-long conflict. Two forward-thinking kings, Baldwin (Edward Norton in an uncredited yet substantial role) and Saladin (Ghassan Massoud), hold an uneasy truce between Christians (who hold the city) and Muslims while factions champ at the bit for blood. There are good and evildoers on both sides, with the Knights Templar taking the brunt of the blame; Balian plans to find his soul while protecting Baldwin and the people. The look of the film, as nearly everything is from Scott, is impressive: his CGI-infused battle scenes rival the LOTR series and, with cinematographer John Mathieson, create postcard beauty with snowy French forests and the vast desert (filmed in Morocco and Spain). An excellent supporting cast, including Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, and David Thewlis, also help make the head and heart of the film work. Many critics pointed out that Bloom doesn't have the gravitas of Russell Crowe in the lead (then again, who does?), but it's the underdeveloped character and not the actor that hurts the film and impacts its power. Balian isn't given much more to do than be sullen and give an occasional big speech, alongside his perplexing abilities for warfare tactics and his wandering moral compass (whose sole purpose seems to be to put a love scene in the movie). Note: all the major characters except Neeson's are based on fact, but many are heavily fictionalized. --Doug Thomas
Set in Jerusalem during the Crusades, this sweeping historical epic from director Ridley Scott stars Orlando Bloom as Balian, a French blacksmith brought into the Christian-Muslim war by a knight (Liam Neeson) fighting to preserve a fragile peace in the Holy City. Balian makes the journey to Jerusalem, falls in love, and comes to lead a band of knights dedicated to victory over the zealots on both sides. With Eva Green, Jeremy Irons and Ghassan Massoud. Director's cut; 194 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English DTS 5.1; Subtitles: English, Spanish, French.

What's Love Got To Do With It?

Tina Turner, that dynamic diva of pop/soul/R&B from the '60s to the '90s, sings like a woman whose life story is every bit as rough and tough as her voice. And What's Love Got to Do With It, based on her autobiographical account (in I, Tina, written with Kurt Loder) of her years under the iron fist of her abusive husband and musical partner/Svengali Ike, is further proof of what we've always known about Tina: She's what you call a survivor. The movie is sort of the Disney version of Tina Turner's story--a glossy but thoroughly enjoyable, old-fashioned showbiz biopic with laughs, tears, great music, and outrageous (but faithful) period decor, costumes, makeup, and hairstyles. Our Heroine triumphs not only over the rigorous demands of her career in the music business, but finally manages to bust out of her troubled, violent marriage as well and become her own person. This is a movie that'll have you shouting at the top of your lungs: "You go, girl!" --Jim Emerson
The amazing life of singer Tina Turner has been translated into an exciting, compelling tale of survival in the entertainment industry. Witness Turner's early, troubled childhood, her stormy, abusive relationship with husband Ike, and her triumphant solo career and comeback. Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne turn in tour-de-force performances; the film features such songs as "Proud Mary" and the title tune. 118 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, French Dolby Digital stereo; theatrical trailer; scene access.

Pixar Short Films Collection - Volume 1
List Price: $29.99

Pixar's unprecedented string of hit animated features was built on the short films in this collection. John Lasseter and Ed Catmull used these cartoons the way Walt Disney used the "Silly Symphonies" during the 1930s: as a training ground for artists and a way to explore the potential of a new medium. Although it's only 90 seconds long, "Luxo, Jr." (1986) ranks as the "Steamboat Willie" of computer animation: For the first time, audiences believed CG characters could think and feel. (It was also the first CG film to make audiences laugh.) When the artists began work on Toy Story, they had learned so much from the shorts, they were ready to undertake that landmark creation. In the later shorts, the viewer can see the artists continuing to experiment: with a more realistic human figure in "Geri's Game" and with new ways of suggesting atmospheric effects in "Boundin'." Some of the more recent shorts continue the adventures of the characters from the features. "Jack-Jack Attack" reveals what happened to the hapless baby-sitter while the Incredibles were off fighting Syndrome, while "Mater and the Ghost Light" shows that life goes on for the inhabitants of Radiator Springs. When Sully from Monsters, Inc. tries to adjust his seat in "Mike's New Car," the animators prolong the moment to wring every drop of humor from the situation--just as an earlier generation of animators milked Wile E. Coyote's antics for all they were worth. The long-unseen films for Sesame Street are an unexpected bonus. A delightful collection of entertaining shorts, and a significant chronicle of the growth of computer animation. (Rated G: suitable for all ages: cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon

Best Gaming Laptop - Alienware M17x
The time has now come for us to play Half-Life2 and Crysis the way it is intended to play. Yes, you are hearing it right. You don't need a PlayStation to experience the stunning dexterity of our favourite graphical pals and the baddies. There are certain defining features that are solidly wholly original to gaming laptops that set them aside from other portable offshoots. The decision to get the best gaming portable should encompass these needs to get that adrenalin rush these games promise us.
the most vital factor that comes into action with gaming performance is the discrete graphics card. We need dedicated memory to cater to the blitzkrieg action in the games which is achievable only with a good discrete graphics card like ATI or Nvidia. Dell's latest Alienware M17x is power packed with Nvidia GeForce SLI card that delivers the true worth of each frame of the game to us. Although AvaDirect Clevo M980NU isn't far behind, Alienware M17x scores a slam-dunk in performance and speed.
At times we may feel that discrete graphics is way too much of a feature wasted for board games which have meager action. It is preferable to have the option to jump between integrated and discrete graphics in such cases and save power. Sony's NW180 J/S has a graceful, tasty design that makes it a fave to continue the road, but offers a poor battery performance thanks to lack of flexibleness and options for power optimization. Alienware M17x offers that advantage which makes it highly flexible and strong and an all powerful leader in the market.
We can switch between integrated and discrete graphics with surprising ease.
Gaming is a constantly reinventing field where nothing is preserved for posterity. The laptop must handle the relentless updates that are happening in the games arena. The load of updating the laptop should not fall on us. ASUS G50 -X1 that has one of the finest designs fails in this vital duty. Capitalizing on this need, Alienware looks after easily updating the command center obviating the necessity for us to manually update the software. You'll need a Job for one of these
although it's not all gloss that weighs the worth of a portable, it is one of the deciding factors in the case of a gaming computer. Do we like to play Crysis on a system with shabby and bumbling design? We do distribute some amount of significance to the design and looks. When top gaming PCs are evaluated, many of them are swish and aesthetically designed. But the proven fact that everyone forgets is that, after we take a plunge into the gaming arena, it is not how sleek the computer is, but how good the display system works out. The system must effectively use the highres that's being offered such that Super Mario is indeed super. Unfortunately , none of the top performing gaming computers offer this satisfaction. This excludes Alienware essentially because it has dual CCFL back-lit LCDs which display top quality images.
The altar of gaming laptop is sanctified by speed, dedicated discrete memory, high res and flexibility and Alienware M17x holds an infallible sway over this altar that the competitors have to work on plenty of areas to match up to it.
