Domecq's Bucket List

Domecq's Bucket List

Complete with Singing, Acting, and Coaching

By Maya Langman

Western Hemisphere  November 2010

What is life without aspirations? Without a list of experiences to strive for or dreams to realize? To most, life is like walking through the woods blindfolded, and only the few who find the treasure map know where they are headed. One of the lucky explorers is Associate Principal, Dr. Greg Domecq, the self-proclaimed "True Renaissance Man." His life's resume includes a plethora of exciting pursuits and accomplishments. From coaching in the ACC to starring in a musical, Domecq has hit all reaches of the spectrum and only plans to keep going.

His taste for excitement began at a young age during his years as a professional singer. His early career led him to perform all over his hometown of New Orleans and even got to sing in California. By the time he was through, he had an accomplished repertoire of performances and even got the chance  to sing with some iconic figures such as John Gary, John Davidson, and Tony Orlando. Domecq also had the opportunity to perform Frankie Laine's hit "Mule Train" in the famous Blue Room of the Fairmont Roosevelt Hotel. His career dissipated after a few years, but not without leaving him with a love of music and motivation for his future. "Now I only sing in the church or in the shower," said Domecq. His background in music led to an avid love of drama, as well as a secret desire to star in the play "Man of LaMancha."

As a senior in high school, Domecq was given an assignment to create a "bucket list" of experiences that the students wanted to finish before the end of their lives. He included his secret-desire to play the lead in "Man of LaMancha" and forgot about it.

When Domecq became the assistant principal at Monticello High School in 1998, it was announced that the the spring musical would be "Man of LaMancha." Domecq was quick to jump at the opportunity and went to the auditions where all of the judges apparently thought he was joking. Domecq ended up scoring the coveted lead role of Don Quixote who was quite the talker. "My lines alone were twenty-two pages long. I thought there was no way in the world," Domecq said. All doubts aside, he did memorize all of his lines and the performance went off without a hitch. He looks back at the experience fondly. He even still keeps the playbill framed in his office. He also pointed out that it is all documented on YouTube under "Charlottesville Man of LaMancha."

The bucket list affected him so much that, to this day, he is still working at crossing off various feats. For example, his love of basketball lead him to start coaching and eventually got him to coach on a high enough level to cross out another item on the list: coaching in the ACC. Domecq realized his dream and was an assistant coach at UVA from 1988-1992. His avid love of sports also brought him to another lgoal, going to the Super Bowl in Miami with his 10 year old son to watch his beloved New Orleans Saints hoist the Lombardi Trophy. Domecq believes that everyone dreams of a happy marriage and great kids, and he feels very fortunate and proud of his family and their accomplishments.

Domecq encourages others to create a bucket list of their own. "Just write down what you love to do…what makes you happy. ..just keep working on it until you die."

About the Author

Greg Domecq is in his eighth year as the Associate Principal at Western Albemarle High School in Crozet, Virginia. In May of 2009, Domecq was presented the Alton L. Taylor Award from the University of Virginia Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa naming him the outstanding administrator in the region. Domecq's current responsibilities at Western include support for the English and Special Services Departments as well as the collaborative initiative, coordinating substitutes, the honor council, transportation, and 10th & 11th grade discipline. Over the years at WAHS, Dr. Domecq has also had oversight of the athletic department, Physical Education Department, textbooks, and teacher duty. On the county level, Domecq served on several committees including the School Business Alliance, the high school discipline steering committee, the behavior management committee, the International Baccalaureate Exploratory team, and the Teacher Performance Appraisal Steering Committee. He is credited with writing the TPA Process Manual, a user-friendly handbook that outlines the implementation of the Teacher Performance Appraisal model.

During Domecq's tenure at the Crozet school, the Warriors have been recognized for several outstanding accomplishments. A few of these accolades are as follows:

  • WAHS was identified in January of 2008 as one of only ten high schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia for the Governor's Award for Educational Excellence.
  • Western consistently earned SAT scores more than one hundred points over the Virginia and National averages. These scores catapulted the school to a national ranking of 401 by Newsweek magazine in 2006.
  • The Warrior Athletic Department earned the prestigious Wachovia Cup for the first time in 2004 recognizing WAHS as the best all-around AA program in the state. Western captured the award again in 2005 becoming only the third school in history to earn back-to-back titles. The Warriors returned to the top-of-the-list for the third time after the 2008 school year.

In 2004 Domecq earned his doctorate in Administration and Supervision from the Curry School at the University of Virginia. His minor areas included Curriculum and Instruction as well as Social Foundations in Education. His dissertation topic, "A Ninth Grade Transition Program, " studied the results of the Summer Leadership Academy at Monticello High School. Domecq has given numerous presentations in the Charlottesville area including visits to the University of Virginia, Piedmont Virginia Community College, Mary Baldwin College, State Farm Insurance, and the Waynesboro Kiwanis Club.

first when your hair is wet, blow dry it while combing it in the directions that he has it. then take either some pomade or gel/wax and ruffle it through in the direction you want. you can play with it as much as you want. as for products go i would suggest :cat walk (as a brand). also you can use mousse :) its good and doesn't cake on like gel does

The Glamorous Life: Stars Come Out for Sondheim at Philharmonic
The New York Philharmonic threw a little "Sondfest" March 15 at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall to celebrate — a full week in advance — the 80th birthday of composer Stephen Sondheim, and the crème de la crème of the Broadway community came out for it.
