can i trademark an altered photo of a politician?

i altered a photo of george bush and plan on profiting off of this image by putting it on tshirts and selling them. can i trademark this particular image since i created it? and protect my intellectual property?

No you cannot trademark an altered photo especially if the photo has some semblance to the politician; you can tradmark only your original work. Also, the original politician could sue you in the worst case assuming you've started benfitting from that photo - say for example by selling it etc. In an ideal world, you and the politician could go into an agreement where you pay him royalties from what you earn by selling the photo.
