Our Lord Jesus during the three years He spent in His public ministry looked ahead to the time when His work here should be finished, and He would go back to His home in Heaven. Soon after His baptism, people began to gather around Him to hear his Word and see His miracles. From among these He began to choose certain ones who should be His special friends, live with Him, go everywhere with Him, and carry on the work of telling others about Him after He went back to Heaven.

Some of these were fishermen. One day Jesus was walking along the shore of the lake. There were many fishermen there, some fishing, some mending their nets. In one boat were two brothers, Peter and Andrew, who He knew, and who knew Him. He stopped and called to them. "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." They knew that He was calling them to a new life and a new work.

They may not have understood what He meant by "fishers of men," but they understood "follow Me!" Right away without arguing or waiting or talking with other people they left their nets and the boat, and they followed Jesus.

They had gone on a little way when they saw another boat anchored to the shore. There were two other brothers in it, James and John. They were working with their father, mending nets. Jesus called to them also, "Follow Me!" Right away they too, left the boat and the nets, said "Goodbye" to their father and followed Jesus. Many others followed Him also when they heard His call.

One night Jesus slipped away from His friends and went to a nearby mountain. There he prayed all night long. The next day He went back to His disciples and friends. From them he chose twelve who He called apostles - Peter, Andrew, James, John, Matthew, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, another James called the son of Alphaeus, Thaddeus, Simon, and Judas Iscariot.

The word apostle comes from the same Greek word as missionary, and it means a sent one. The twelve apostles stayed with Him all the time after this, He was the Teacher and they were the pupils. He was training them for the work they must do after He should leave them, So He taught them about Himself, about His Heavenly Father and the kingdom of Heaven.

They were with Him always. They heard Him teach the multitudes. Often when they were alone they would ask Him to explain things that they did not understand. They saw Him do many miracles. They were with Him when the Pharisees tried to trick Him with hard questions, and they heard His wise answers. All this time He prayed for them, loved them, and taught them.

Police said 46-year old priest Philip Valayam of Roman Catholic Church who also worked as professor at Tangaza College of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, was attacked by gangsters while driving home after celebrating a mid-night mass. He was shot in the early hours of Sunday, December 25, ironically near the post of a security firm, CISA noted.

"The thugs had no time to rob him as personnel from the security post raised alarm and police arrived soon," Priest Matua of the Don Bosco told journalists Tuesday, December 26. It was unclear if any arrests were made and police officials could not immediately be reached for clarification
Police reportedly took him to hospital but he was pronounced dead on arrival. Salesian priests and other Christians and religious representatives gathered for "a solemn Eucharist Celebration" at the spot where the priest was shot,

Arrangements were reportedly being made to transport his body to India. Philip Valayam was born March 23, 1958, and ordained priest on December 29, 1987 in India. He came to Eastern Africa in 1998 and before working in Kenya served at the Salesian Seminary in Tanzania, as professor of philosophy.
After a break for studies in Rome in 2002, he returned to the region and was assigned to Don Bosco Youth Educational Services and appointed Academic Advisor to the Catholic University of Eastern Africa and other institutes."Until his death he was ministering to various religious congregations and youth groups in various secondary and tertiary levels.

Catholic officials said his death was a reminder of the insecurity in Kenya Uganda Tanzania and other regions where missionaries work. Priest Valayam joins a “long list of Church clergy who have been killed in Kenya since the murder of Father John Kaiser of the Mill Hill Missionaries," said the Don Bosco Eastern Africa Multimedia Services (BEAMS) Kaiser had been investigating allegations of murder, rape and corruption at the heart of the Kenyan government before he died in 2000.

The only information I can find indicates that St. Vincent Ferrer only raised 28 people.
