Saturday Night Live: The Best of Cheri Oteri

Cheri Oteri breathed bracing fresh air into the seasons she appeared on Saturday Night Live, and created memorable characters both absurd and delightful. This 78-minute disc contains samples of some of her signature performances, including the preternaturally peppy cheerleader, Arianna, paired with a strapping Will Ferrell. (Ever tried to lead a cheer at the team's
swim meet? Arianna never met a challenge she couldn't conquer.) Oteri also takes on media icon Barbara Walters, satirized decades earlier by the incomparable Gilda Radner as Baba Wawa. Oteri's impersonation both pays homage to Radner's and takes it to a new level of absurdity; Oteri's Walters is a randy, name-dropping old coot who doesn't miss a beat--or an opportunity to aggrandize herself ("I was horseback riding the other day with Saddam Hussein
"). Don't miss the brief skit where Walters tries to have phone sex with a nonplussed Tom Brokaw. Other signature characters include Oteri's Judge Judy and the prescription hound Collette (appearing here in a priceless bit with John Goodman as a flummoxed pharmacist). And of course, the abusive Burger Castle counter chick Nadeen, who shoots down every customer request with a "Simma down, now!" Extras include audition and dress rehearsal footage, and an audio commentary by Oteri. --A.T. Hurley
Cheri Oteri's peppy, energetic style always made her characters on SNL hilarious to watch. From physical comedy (along side Will Ferrell) as the Cheerleader, Arianna, to impressions of Barbara Walters and Judge Judy, to wacky characters like Rita Del Vecchio, Nadeen or prescription drug junkie Collette Reardon, Cheri made audiences laugh so hard they often needed time to "Simma Down." Now you can own the best of Cheri's performances on one DVD. Be sure check out the bonus features such as the audio commentary and get a first-hand account of SNL from Cheri herself, as well as a sketch from a dress rehearsal that's never been seen until now! Starring: Cheri Oteri

Paula Abdul's fans will really have fun with this 45-minute, high-energy dance workout. Even the warm-up is energetic and jazzy. Abdul teaches two dance routines. She introduces a 16-count pattern slowed down, then speeds it up until you're up to tempo, adding on until you've got a routine. Don't expect teaching expertise from Abdul--she cues the moves, but never explains how to do what she's demonstrating. Just watch and follow. You may need to pause this video a lot at first to learn the moves--she doesn't repeat the slowed-down moves enough to catch them--but after you get them, it becomes pure fun. She is assisted by two of her tour dancers and a crowded class of what she calls "ordinary people," though they're mostly young, good-looking, and very fit. The production is colorful and flashy. The constantly changing camera angles are distracting and sometimes annoying, because they hinder you from watching the feet to learn the moves. You'll enjoy the playful cool-down to Village People's "YMCA," led by the males in the class. An abdominal segment and stretches finish the workout. Coordination and rhythm required. --Joan Price

The brilliant British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen dips into his stable of pre-existing characters and comes up with a big-screen vehicle for Brüno, a gay Austrian fashionista. Brüno is blond, fame-hungry, and prone to wearing unexpected combinations of lederhosen and hot pants. But it's his runway disaster with an all-Velcro suit that gets him barred from the Milan fashion scene and leads to the cancellation of his TV show. ("For the second time in a century, Austria had turned on its most famous man," he complains.) Clearly, he needs to go to America and share his philosophy--or at least become a celebrity in whatever way possible. Brüno rolls out in a fashion similar to Borat, a combination of a scripted through-line interspersed with scenes of Baron Cohen improvising with people who don't realize they're being set up, Candid Camera-style. About half the time, this reaps some healthy laughs: a sequence with Brüno sitting down for a conversation with a "de-programmer" who claims to cure people of their homosexuality is on-topic, and there's a wild series of interviews with parents so desperate to get their kiddies into showbiz they'll agree to all manner of dangerous and irresponsible childcare. A lot of the humor isn't about Brüno's gayness at all; Baron Cohen is at his best when displaying freakish comic bravery (sitting across from a terrorist, he advises that "Your King Osama looks like a dirty wizard"). But the other half of Brüno simply misses the movie's best targets--homophobia and celebrity culture--by miscalculating the nature of ambush comedy. When Baron Cohen gets former Presidential candidate Ron Paul in a hotel room and begins to undress, Paul isn't showing bigotry by storming out (except in his language); he's understandably reacting to obnoxious behavior in a supposedly professional situation. Too many set-ups fall short of the mother-lode pay dirt that Borat so frequently hit, leaving this a distinctly lesser item in the Baron Cohen portfolio. --Robert HortonStills from Bruno (Click for larger image)

The delightful designs of William Joyce (writer/illustrator of such popular children's books as George Shrinks and Bently & Egg) make Robots a joy to behold. The round, bouncy, and ramshackle forms of hero Rodney Copperbottom and his computer-animated friends are part of an ornate and daffy Rube-Goldberg universe of elaborate contraptions and gleaming metallic surfaces. Rodney (voiced with a hint-of-Scottish lilt by Ewan McGregor) is a young inventor who sets off for Robot City to work for Bigweld (Mel Brooks), the supreme inventor of the mechanical world. But upon his arrival, Rodney discovers that Bigweld has disappeared, and the slick, shiny Ratchet (Greg Kinnear, As Good As It Gets) is phasing out the spare parts that lumpen robots need to function and replacing them with "upgrades"--expensive and glistening new exoskeletons. Unfortunately, from this suitable beginning, the story degenerates into a series of action sequences that make very little sense, though some are kinetic and fun (though others are only there to serve the inevitable Robots video game). Most kids will enjoy the sheer visual pleasure of the movie, but compared to the narrative richness of Pixar movies like The Incredibles and Toy Story, that pleasure is pretty short-lived. Also featuring the voices of Robin Williams, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Amanda Bynes, Jennifer Coolidge, and many, many more. --Bret Fetzer
Fasten your seat bolts and gear up for a hilarious, heartwarming comedy that's "Fun for the whole family" (Clay Smith, Access Hollywood). With the help of his misfit mechanical friends, a small town robot named Rodney embarks on the adventure of a lifetime as he heads for the big city to pursue his dreams-and ultimately proves that anyone can shine no matter what they're made of. Featuring an all-star voice cast and a groundbreaking visual style that pushes the boundaries of animated filmmaking. Robots is a dazzling, fun-filled feast for the eyes and a riveting good time for all ages!Features include: •MPAA Rating: PG•Format: Blu-Ray•Runtime: 90 minutes

According to Randy Jackson in a interview with MTV, Ellen DeGeneres passion for music and as an avid American Idol fan, makes her an ideal judge. He said “"She'll give that layperson-at-home view. ... She will give the at-home viewer a real voice to be on the judges' panel."

What can Paula Abdul do now that she has quit American Idol?
Maybe she can do a 3D movie of herself clapping her hands like how she does... you know, when she gets trigger happy
Lol, she can't do nothing else except clap. She can't dance, probably can't sing because drugs ruined her voice and American Idol is the only thing she could do. Now that it's over, what now? She has a jewelry line. But i agree with the last answer, she'll probably end up doing a reality show. Hey, a reality show about her jewelry line!
Post-Paula Depression
The unthinkable has happened - by losing Paula's craziness, and with Simon heading for the door, "American Idol" feels like it has finally reached the end of its run How do you replace Paula Abdul? You don't. That's no knock on Ellen DeGeneres — it's just that absurd Hollywood creatures like Paula are rare and precious flukes of the universe, like the Loch Ness monster in sequined capri pants ...
