BENNETT TONY DUETS AN AMERICAN CLASSIC

At this point, who else but Tony Bennett would have the clout to round up stars on the scale of Elton John, Paul McCartney, Bono, Celine Dion and Barbra Streisand for some duets? (Note also that unlike some similar projects, all the parties involved on this CD were alive when it was recorded!) The material consists of relatively obvious classics in standard big-band arrangements, and Bennett himself is in top form at age 80, so much so that he doesn't need anybody else to handle "I Left My Heart in San Francisco." But the fun comes from checking out how his collaborators fare. The Dixie Chicks provide wonderful Andrews Sisters-type harmonies on the percolating version of "Lullaby of Broadway" that opens the festivities. The best songs tend to be the ones where Bennett's slightly craggy voice is juxtaposed to smooth female ones, like Diana Krall on "The Best Is Yet to Come," familiar accomplice k.d. lang on the sultry "Because of You" and Streisand—-perhaps Bennett's only equal in stature at this point—on "Smile." Among the less expected guests, soulman John Legend is a revelation on the hard-swinging "Sing, You Sinners," while George Michael confirms he's quite the crooner on "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?" Elvis Costello, Celine Dion or Juanes don't sound as comfortable, and sometimes it feels as if they overdo it to compensate, but overall this collection is among the best of its kind, with most guests rising to the occasion. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Sixteen Candles (High School Reunion Collection) Sixteen Candles (High School Reunion Collection)

Molly Ringwald established herself as the teen queen of the '80s in this fresh comedy. The movie is a day in the life of Samantha, whose 16th birthday is turning out to be anything but sweet. All the traumas of teendom come down on one long day, which sees Samantha surrounded by dithery relatives, mooning over a high school hunk, and pursued by a sawed-off Lothario. Sixteen Candles marked the directing debut of John Hughes, and its goofy energy displayed a promising talent with a great ear for high school lingo ... a promise neglected since Hughes became, after Home Alone, a one-man entertainment industry. There are some pretty crass moments (Why the stereotype of the foreign-exchange student from Asia?), but Ringwald's steady appeal smoothes over the rough spots. As the pubescent, self-styled lady-killer, Anthony Michael Hall turns in a hilarious portrait of a young swinger; he and Ringwald would reteam with Hughes for The Breakfast Club, another key teen picture of the decade. --Robert Horton

It's Samantha Baker's sweet sixteen birthday and no one in her family remembers the occasion. She's a typical teen, enduring creepy freshman, spoiled siblings, confused parents and the Big Blonde on campus who stands between her and the boy of her dreams.Item Type: DVD MovieItem Rating: RStreet Date: 09/02/03Wide Screen: yesDirector Cut: noSpecial Edition: noLanguage: ENGLISHForeign Film: noSubtitles: noDubbed: noFull Frame: noRe-Release: noPackaging: Sleeve

Aliens Aliens

Aliens [Blu-ray] Aliens [Blu-ray]
List Price: $24.99
Sale Price: $14.99

Aliens is one of the few cases of a sequel that far surpassed the original. Sigourney Weaver returns as Ripley, who awakens on Earth only to discover that she has been hibernating in space so long that everyone she knows is dead. Then she is talked into traveling (along with a squad of Marines) to a planet under assault by the same aliens that nearly killed her. Once she gets there, she finds a lost little girl who triggers her maternal instincts--and she discovers that the company has once again double-crossed her, in hopes of capturing one of the aliens to study as a military weapon. Directed and written by James Cameron, this is one of the most intensely exciting (not to mention intensely frightening) action films ever, with a large ensemble cast that includes Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen, Paul Reiser, and Michael Biehn. Weaver defined the action woman in this film and walked away with an Oscar nomination for her trouble. --Marshall Fine

James Cameron's action-packed sequel finds Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) accompanied by a platoon of space marines as she reluctantly returns to the planet where her crew discovered the alien. But their mission to rescue a group of colonists turns into a desperate battle for survival as they find themselves up against an entire hive of the lethal creatures. Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen also star. Theatrical version; 137 min./Extended version; 154 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks: English DTS HD 5.1 Master Audio, Dolby Digital 4.1, Dolby Digital Surround, French DTS 5.1, Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1, Portuguese Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: English (SDH), French, Spanish, Portuguese; audio commentary by Cameron, others; deleted scenes; extended scenes; isolated music score.

There's an extra coat of hot wax on Pixar's vibrant, NASCAR-influenced comedy about a world populated entirely by cars. Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) is the slick rookie taking the Piston Cup series by storm when the last race of the season (the film's high-octane opening) ends in a three-way tie. On the way to the tie-breaker race in California, Lightning loses his way off Route 66 in the Southwest desert and is taught to stop and smell the roses by the forgotten citizens of Radiator Springs. It's odd to have such a slim story from the whizzes of Pixar, and the film pales a bit from their other films (though can that be a fair comparison?). Nonetheless, Cars is another gleaming ride with Pixar founder John Lasseter, who's directing for the first time since Toy Story 2. There's the usual spectrum of excellent characters teamed with appropriate voice talent, loads of smooth humor for kids and parents alike, knockout visuals, and a colorful array of sidekicks, including a scene-stealing baby blue forklift named Guido. Lightning's plight is changed with the help of former big-city lawyer Sally Carrera (Pixar veteran Bonnie Hunt), the town's patriarch Doc Hudson (Paul Newman), and kooky tow truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy). The Incredibles was the first Pixar film to break the 100-minute barrier, but had enough story not to suffer; Cars, at 116 minutes (including some must-see end credit footage), is not as fortunate, plus it never pierces the heart. Trivia fans should have bonanza with the frame-by-frame DVD function; the movie is stuffed with in-jokes, some appearing only for an instant. Ages 5 and up. --Doug Thomas

From the acclaimed creators of Toy Story, The Incredibles and Finding Nemo comes a high-octane adventure comedy that shows life is about the journey, not the finish line. Enjoy Pixar's landmark classic on both Disney Blu-ray Hi-Def and DVD in this sensational 2-Disc Combo Pack.Hotshot rookie race car Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) is living life in the fast lane until he hits a detour on this way to the most important race of his life. Defendor does what Kick-Ass tried to do: portray a superhero in a realistic way, except unlike Kick-Ass, it doesn't veer into overkill by the second act. This hero has no powers, no fortune, and sometimes no clue. When he gets punched he bleeds, and most people rightfully think there is something wrong with him.

Woody Harrelson plays a construction worker called Arthur Poppington who is Defendor by night. To call his costume rudimentary would be flattery. He has to paint his mask on his face; the big D on his black sweatshirt is just pieces of duct tape, and his helmet makes him look like a coal miner. A camera is attached to his suit so that he can bring evidence to the police, but it is recorded on VHS tapes. Not exactly the bat suit from The Dark Knight. Even the patient police captain (Clark Johnson) tells him he can't do anything with these tapes because of the low image quality.

Arthur is no martial arts experts either. When he is on a roof and sees a dirty cop (Elias Koteas) roughing up an underage prostitute called Katrina "Kat" Debrofkowitz (Kat Dennings) he jumps...into an empty trash container. "I need to remember the trash schedules" he tells himself.

Yet he is persistent. Eventually he captures the cop and forces him to disclose the whereabouts of Captain Industry, the man Arthur believes is responsible for all the crimes in the city and possibly the world. At first the cop laughs at him when Arthur tortures him by spraying lime juice in his eyes, but he stops laughing when Arthur uses a nutcracker on one of his fingers.

At the beginning of the movie, Arthur is being evaluated by a Dr. Park (Sandra Oh), a court-appointed psychiatrist, which gives the movie an air of credibility. It almost feels like a scene from an episode of Law and Order when a loopy New Yorker has been apprehended and the prosecution wonders if he is fit to stand trial. The doctor sympathises with Arthur as she discovers that he is an honest and kind man who turned to comic books after his mother abandoned him for drugs. When Arthur asked his grandfather who was responsible, his answer was "captains of industry" hence his quest for the dastardly villain which unfortunately only exists in Arthur's mind.

Kat Dennings has a layered role as the prostitute who is saved by Arthur. At first she stays with him just for his money, which she uses to buy drugs. Not that Arthur would ever sleep with her, but she convinces him that she knows who is Captain Industry and points him in the direction of a vicious gangster who will not hesitate to kill a crazy man in a costume, even if he only sees him as an annoying fly. She can clearly see that there is something wrong with Arthur, but chooses to stay with him as long as he has money. Yet over time his good nature slowly rubs off on her and she feels she should be nicer to the one person who has ever been nice to her.

Another understanding character is Paul (Michael Kelly) Arthur's friend from the construction crew who wants to help Arthur since he once saved his son. He is often irritated with Arthur's reckless behaviour but wants him to be safe. After he learns the truth about the bruises on his face, he gives a convincing speech about how you don't need a costume to be a hero.

The story's uneven tone may turn off some people since at first you are not sure if you are supposed to laugh at Arthur as he is clearly mentally unstable. There are funny moments, especially whenever Defendor runs into the cop and manages to ruin his day, much to his own surprise. Yet the filmmakers don't shy away from implying that in real life Arthur would get seriously hurt.

By the end, Defendor is inspiring since he is the essence of a hero: a simple individual who wants to make a difference and stop the criminals who are hurting people.

Bloomberg & Paul

Anything could happen in this political cycle called Presidential election 2008. Who would have guessed that Rudy would be out after campaigning in one state? Since the Florida primary is yet to happen, I'm predicting here. Who would have thought Barack Obama would be making the waves that he is? Surely not Hill nor Bill. But, what about a third party candidate that could make a difference?

I have been saying for a year now that I thought Michael Bloomberg would come out in late February or March and make the announcement that he'd be running for president. To date there's nothing going on that would change my mind about that. He's still doing all the behind the scenes things necessary to get in on the Texas primary in March.

Currently, twenty-six percent (26%) of American voters believe New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is at least somewhat likely to make a third-party or independent bid for the White House in 2008. That includes 5% who say he is Very Likely to do so.

Twenty-nine percent (29%) say that Texas Congressman Ron Paul will run as an alternative to the two major parties. Eleven percent (11%) believe he is Very Likely to do so. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that roughly 15% of voters would currently vote for one of these two candidates in general election match-ups.

When the two candidates are mentioned as independent options in match-ups between Mitt Romney and the two Democratic frontrunners, Paul and Bloomberg attract roughly the same level of support. When John McCain is mentioned as the Republican candidate in a match-up with Barack Obama, Ron Paul earns 11% of the vote while Bloomberg attracts 5%.

Those are sentiments now before Bloomberg starts to spend some of his hundreds of millions of dollars that he alone can do. And with the economy in the mess that it's in and where it appears to be headed (can you say recession), who better to be elected president than a financial guru like Bloomberg? Tell me, who knows more about financial matters than he?

Most are not aware that no Democrat has occupied the white house with a majority (not a plurality) vote in decades and a third party run by either Michael or Ron would add to that statistics should a Democrat win. The pair of third party candidates attract from 13% to 17% of Republicans in each match-up. They earn only 5% to 10% of the Democratic vote. So, it appears that Democrats are favored in any third party run. Maybe!

So while Super Tuesday is now just a week away, Florida will go to the polls today, and all candidates spread out over 22 states for the big run, don't look now but a couple of third party candidates with voter appeal are just over your right shoulder.
