From Britain with leather comes this three-volume collection of rare Avengers episodes starring Patrick Macnee as urbane, umbrella-toting spy John Steed and Honor Blackman as Cathy Gale, who preceded Emma Peel as Steed's partner. Virtually unseen in the United States, these six episodes from the third season of The Avengers will be a revelation for fans of this offbeat series. Blackman portrayed Cathy Gale, stylish, leather-clad anthropologist and judo expert, from 1962 to '64, leaving the series to star as Pussy Galore in Goldfinger. Another veteran of the James Bond series makes a surprising appearance in "Little Wonders," an episode on volume 1: Miss Moneypenny (Lois Maxwell), a machine-gun-toting nurse. This episode, in which Steed goes undercover in a 300-year-old crime organization, features a kiss between Steed and Gale. He was never so intimate with Emma Peel... at least not onscreen. Volume 2 contains two episodes ranked among the best of the Cathy Gale era. In "The Wringer," Gale comes to Steed's rescue after he becomes a guinea pig in a diabolical plot to brainwash agents. In "Mandrake," a deserted village becomes the burial ground of choice for a rash of "rich and reasonably eminent" victims of a murder-for-hire business. "The Secrets Broker" on volume 3, in which a murder leads Steed to a wine shop, is not quite vintage Avengers, but "Trojan Horse," set at a racetrack and involving an illicit betting syndicate, is a winner. Produced before the series switched over to film, these black-and-white episodes are technically cruder than their more popularly known counterparts. But the plots are often just as confounding. Cathy Gale may leave Emma Peel enthusiasts underwhelmed; her banter with Steed lacks the erotic promise that made the Peel episodes so provocative. But you'll get a kick out the martial-arts prowess that reportedly knocked out her male adversary in the graveyard fight sequence in "Mandrake." --Donald Liebenson
Contains the following black and white episodes: Vol. 1: The White Elephant/The Little Wonders Vol. 2: The Wringer/Mandrake Vol. 3: The Secrets Broker/The Trojan Horse The original sexy AVENGERS duo is now available to American audiences. Stalk scoundrels, assassins, and spies with John Steed (Patrick Macnee) -- part debonair man about town, part ruthless, unscrupulous professional undercover agent -- and his first female partner, Mrs. Cathy Gale (Honor Blackman) -- professional anthropologist, undercover agent, firearms expert and judo master. Together, they protect society from traitors, tyrants and terrorists as THE AVENGERS! Produced by John Bryce, Music by Johnny Dankworth

Roger Moore's last outing as James Bond is evidence enough that it was time to pass the torch to another actor. Beset by crummy action (an out-of-control fire engine?) and featuring a fading Moore still trying to prop up his mannered idea of style, the film is largely interesting for Christopher Walken's quirky performance as a sort-of supervillain who wants to take out California's Silicon Valley. Grace Jones has a spookily interesting presence as a lethal associate of Walken's (and who, in the best Bond tradition, has sex with 007 before trying to kill him later), and Patrick Macnee (Steed!) has a warm if brief bit. Even directed by John Glen, who brought some crackle to the Moore years in the Bond franchise, this is a very slight effort. --Tom Keogh

There have been five James Bonds, but even Ralph Fiennes, star of the Avengers movie admits that there is only one John Steed. When he first donned his iconic bowler hat, actor Patrick Macnee put an eccentric spin on the traditional English gentleman. Witty, urbane, a stickler for etiquette, and able to disarm the most dastardly villain with a casual flick of his tightly furled umbrella, Steed helped London to swing during the heady days of the 1960s. The Avengers and Me is Macnee's memoir of his time on the cult TV show. Reading the book is like sitting down with the actor over a nice cup of tea as he reminisces about life behind and in front of the cameras. He is particularly gracious in his discussion of the women with whom he shared his adventures: Honor Blackman, Diana Rigg, Linda Thorson, and Joanna Lumley are all lavished with Macnee's signature charm. He only becomes critical when writing about some of the production decisions that, he believes, compromised the original vision of the show, and he seems to think that The New Avengers was not a terribly good idea. Overall, however, The Avengers and Me is as warm and as witty as the man himself. --Simon Leake

Here are some more information for Patrick Macnee:

Are you looking for some good movies to rent for Halloween? The following films will not only provide a number of jump-out-of-your-seat moments for the month of October, but they're also suitable for entertaining horror fans during the rest of the year. From zombies and werewolves to vampires, this list features tales of terror in all shapes and sizes.
Army of Darkness (1993) - Our list of horror flicks begins on a lighter note, as the third film in Sam Raimi's Evil Dead trilogy is peppered with outrageous humor and gross-out moments. Our fearless hero, Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell), finds himself transported back in time with nothing more than his shotgun, chainsaw, and '73 Oldsmobile. Let's hope that's enough, as he'll have to battle the forces of the undead alongside knights of the Middle Ages. Groovy.
Dead Snow (2009) - Another blend of horror and comedy, this Norwegian film follows a group of students as they try to enjoy Easter vacation in a remote cabin in the snow-covered mountains. The fun doesn't last long, however, as they're soon set upon by Nazi zombies looking for long-hidden gold. Zombies are bad enough, but Nazi zombies really take the cake.
Outpost (2008) - There's nothing comical about this British film revolving around a group of modern-day mercenaries hired to escort a scientist into a supposedly abandoned Eastern European bunker. Of course, it's not as abandoned as advertised, and the men are soon plunged into a nightmarish realm of Nazis, reanimation, and reality shifting. Ray Stevenson (Rome, The Book of Eli) stars.
Zombie Strippers (2008) - When an infected soldier stumbles into the strip club known as "Rhino," it sets off a series of gory deaths, zombie reanimations, and plenty of hot strippers shaking their stuff. A film with tongue planted firmly in cheek. Starring Jenna Jameson, Robert Englund, and Penny Drake.
28 Weeks Later (2007) - Following the events of the original film, 28 Days Later, Britain has been declared relatively safe for habitation. As NATO forces and wary survivors go about their business, they fail to realize that their problems are far from over. In case you missed the first one, the culprit here is the Rage Virus, which spreads via blood and saliva and turns its victims into mindless (yet fast) killing machines. Starring Jeremy Renner, Rose Byrne, Idris Elba, and Robert Carlyle.
The Howling (1981) - Still holding up after all these years, this Joe Dante werewolf flick centers around a newswoman (Dee Wallace-Stone) who's attacked by a serial killer and goes to recover at a secluded resort. But all is not as it seems at "The Colony," and soon people are being torn apart by werewolves and gunned down with silver bullets. Co-starring Patrick Macnee, Slim Pickens, and Noble Willingham, the film's transformation scenes are still frightening, thanks to the efforts of effects man Rob Bottin.
Near Dark - Years before she won an Oscar for The Hurt Locker, director Kathryn Bigelow helmed this snappy tale of modern-day vampires in Oklahoma. Adrian Pasdar is the handsome young rancher who falls for--and gets bit by--a mysterious drifter (Jenny Wright). As the transformation struggles to take hold, he's soon introduced to her murderous family, including a veteran of the Civil War (Lance Henriksen) and a psychotic killer who wears spurs (Bill Paxton). An entertaining melding of the horror and Western genres.
That wraps up our look at some good movies to rent for Halloween. Luckily, terror never goes out of season, so you'll also be able to enjoy these films on a summer night when the moon is full and menacing.
Kinky Boots
Kinky boots are boots with extreme characteristics which are intended to present a dramatic sexy appearance, such as by a prostitute or dominatrix. Extreme characteristics might include very high heels, thigh- or crotch-high length, or unusual colors or materials. They can be related to boot fetishism, a kind of shoe fetishism which thus make them a form of fetish clothing. The term is ambiguous, since what can be considered kinky by some can be seen as elegant fashion by others.
Soccer T-Shirt
Boots of this type, and specifically the thigh-high leather boots worn by Honor Blackman in her role as Cathy Gale in The Avengers, are referred to in the 1964 song "Kinky Boots" by Honor Blackman and Patrick Macnee. Usually, nowadays the term is connected to the type of thigh-high boots used e.g. by Julia Roberts in the movie Pretty Woman and by Madonna in her Re-Invention Tour in 2004.
A related term is fuck-me boots, which is, however, often used in a more tongue-in-cheek, humorous way. It is a term more common to the US.
The term "kinky boots" was coined in the UK in the early 1960s when high boots, which had previously been worn in the 'underground' fetish and sadomasochistic world of the Dominatrix and her clients, broke into mainstream female fashion. The term 'sexual kink', meaning not entirely straight, was used, often in a jocular sense, to describe an unusual sexual desire that was not sufficiently deviant to attract the word perversion. Since men who were attracted to women in boots, which symbolised power, were heterosexual, the term kinky was applied to them, rather than pervert, which at that time mainly implied homosexuality. The term thus became applied to the boots that were worn by women because of their previous association with S&M.
The original "Kinky Boots" were calf to knee length pull on black leather boots with 3-4 inch heels and pointed toes. This was the kind of boot worn by Honor Blackman (Cathy Gale) and Diana Rigg (Emma Peel) in the original "Avengers" television series; Honor Blackman and Patrick McNee (John Steed) cut a single record called "Kinky Boots" which became a Top 5 UK charts' hit in 1990, 27 years after its original release. "Kinky boot beasts" make a brief appearance in the Sea of Monsters sequence in the 1968 Beatles' movie Yellow Submarine.
The boots were soon available in other colours, white being popular, and all heel heights. Later, from the mid '60s onwards, the stiletto went out of fashion and calf and even thigh boots with lower thick heels or even flat heels came into fashion. These made it across the 'pond' to the states and were called "go-go boots" in the US; however in the UK they were mostly still called "Kinky Boots" and the term was still being applied to the high-heeled platform boot, a popular fashion item of the 1970s.
Boots are a common female fashion these days, so the term is now usually only used for the original type of dominatrix S&M boot ?? outrageously sexy very high stiletto boots, generally of thigh length and in either black or white or bright shiny colours.
The film Kinky Boots was released in 2005 and told the story of an ailing company of High Quality traditional men's shoe manufacturers that found a new lease on life making high heeled fetish footwear for transvestites, S&M lovers and the sex industry generally.
