Goodbye Lover [VHS] Goodbye Lover [VHS]
List Price: $14.98
Sale Price: $1.86

Overlooked and underrated, Goodbye Lover is a tawdry, tasty film noir with a soft spot for its scheming antiheroine. With her platinum Lulu bob, a killer wardrobe, and a Sound of Music fetish that inspires her to "climb every mountain" of bad-girl ambition, Patricia Arquette is perfectly cast as Sandra, the sweet but lethal wife of Jake (Dermot Mulroney), who works in a top-drawer ad agency with his brother Ben (Don Johnson). Weary stud Ben falls prey to simultaneous affairs with Sandra and his devoted secretary (Mary-Louise Parker), and the cynical Detective Pompano (Ellen DeGeneres) unravels the murder-for-insurance plot while her clueless Mormon partner (Ray McKinnon) tries to keep pace. Combining mordant humor and rampant depravity, this deliciously dark comedy starts fast and never lets up, liberating director Roland Joffé (The Killing Fields) from the sobriety of his previous work. The entire cast is great, but it's DeGeneres who makes this a recommended sleeper. --Jeff Shannon

Hi-Lo Country [VHS] Hi-Lo Country [VHS]
List Price: $19.95

Based on the novel by Max Evans and directed by Stephen Frears, The Hi-Lo Country charted a long and circuitous route to the big screen, and the final result proves that the material posed a major--and perhaps insurmountable--challenge for screen adaptation. It's easy to see why this contemporary Western was once a coveted project of director Sam Peckinpah; its codes of honor, male bonding, and hardened morality would've played nicely into Peckinpah's artistic legacy. There are clear echoes of Peckinpah in the screenplay by Walon Green (who wrote The Wild Bunch), and while the movie is blessed by Woody Harrelson's vivid performance as a reckless latter-day cowboy, Frears fails to maintain a compelling tone and the rest of the cast nearly fades into the background. Billy Crudup (Without Limits) plays Harrelson's best pal, just returned to New Mexico from service in World War II with hopes of starting a cattle ranch free from the greedy clutches of a local rancher (Sam Elliott) who dominates the town of Hi-Lo like a bootclad kingpin. Harrelson joins in the effort, but tensions rise when he connects with the sultry seductress (Patricia Arquette) with whom Crudup has fallen inexplicably in love. Harrelson has provoked others as well, and he seems primed for a fall, but The Hi-Lo Country is a film out of balance. Memorable moments are found in abundance, and the film's period detail is impeccable, but Crudup's character is so underwritten and underplayed that his role as narrator and ostensible hero has minimal dramatic impact. By the time fate deals its inevitable blow, it's too late to care. Frears has suffered from similar missteps before (remember Mary Reilly?), and The Hi-Lo Country leaves you wondering what Peckinpah might have done with the novel he so dearly admired. --Jeff Shannon

Ed Wood (Special Edition) Ed Wood (Special Edition)
List Price: $29.99
Sale Price: $5.84

Can your heart stand the shocking facts of the true story of Edward D. Wood, Jr.? Director Tim Burton's hilariously heartfelt paean to the cross-dressing creator of "Glen or Glenda" and "Plan 9 from Outer Space" stars Johnny Depp as Wood, with Sarah Jessica Parker, Bill Murray, Jeffrey Jones, Lisa Marie and George "The Animal" Steele as members of his eccentric stock company, and Best Supporting Actor Oscar-winner Martin Landau as aging horror icon/drug addict Bela Lugosi. 127 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles: Spanish; audio commentary by Landau, Burton; featurettes; deleted scenes; theatrical trailer; music video; more.

Edward D. Wood Jr. was an actor writer-director-producer, occasionally in drag, who combined meager bursts of talent with an undying optimism to create some of the most bizarrely memorable "B" movies to ever come out of Tinseltown. Though Wood died in obscurity as an alcoholic in 1978, his films have been considered cult classics for years. He is consistently voted the worst director who ever lived. You would think this an odd subject, but director Tim Burton harnesses the undying hopefulness that made Wood such a character. Shot in black and white, just like Wood's creations, this stylized, witty production captures the poetic absurdity of Wood's films and his unconventional life. Burton's recreation of Wood's wonderfully awful Plan 9 from Outer Space looks much better than the original low-budget quickie. Burton tackled an extremely strange subject matter for a biopic, but Wood is presented as naive almost to the point of delusion, so the story works. The pace sags in the middle, as the weirdness starts to wear thin, but Depp proves himself an adroit actor, even while wearing angora and a blonde wig. Wood's unconventional repertoire company is faithfully reproduced, including an Academy Award-winning Martin Landau as Bela Lugosi. Landau is pathetic, droll, and charismatic as the elderly junkie who made his last screen appearances in Wood's films. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Holes (Widescreen Edition) Holes (Widescreen Edition)

Features include: •MPAA Rating: PG•Format: DVD•Runtime: 117 minutes

Fans of author Louis Sachar's book Holes will be delighted with this scrupulously faithful adaptation. After being wrongly found guilty of stealing a pair of sneakers, Stanley Yelnats (Shia LaBeouf) gets sent to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile correctional facility in the bed of a long-gone dry Texas lake. There--under the watchful eye of overseer Mr. Sir (a zesty Jon Voight), sneakily mean therapist Dr. Pendanski (Tim Blake Nelson, O Brother Where Art Thou?), and the cool and cruel Warden (Sigourney Weaver)--Stanley and dozens of other delinquents are forced to dig an endless series of holes that the Warden hopes will lead her to a precious secret left behind by a long-dead female outlaw (Patricia Arquette). Sachar's book is beloved for its vivid characters and suspenseful plot; by sticking close to its source, Holes has become a dynamic, exciting, and surprisingly touching movie. --Bret Fetzer

A Nightmare on Elm Street 1-4: 4 Film Favorites A Nightmare on Elm Street 1-4: 4 Film Favorites
List Price: $17.94
Sale Price: $7.27

A teenage boy moves to Elm Street and soon becomes a pawn in the supernatural schemes of frightful Freddie Krueger, in "A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge" (1986). Mark Patton, Kim Myers, Hope Lange, and Robert Englund star. Next, just when you thought it was safe to go back to bed...fearsome Freddy's back, and he's tormenting the dreams of some troubled teens under the care of the girl who survived his first rampage, in "A Nightmare on Elm Street, Part 3: Dream Warriors" (1987). Englund, Heather Langenkamp, Craig Wasson, John Saxon, and Patricia Arquette star. And, the biggest cut-up in horror films returns in "A Nightmare on Elm Street, Part 4: The Dream Master" (1988), as Freddy (Englund) seeks revenge on the kids who "killed" him one film earlier, turning their dreams into deadly nightmares. Lisa Wilcox, Rodney Eastman co-star; directed by Renny Harlin. Two-disc set also includes "A Nightmare on Elm Street" (1984). 6 1/4 hrs. total. Standard and Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital Surround stereo, Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English; audio commentary; biographies; theatrical trailers.

In the trinity of modern horror films, there's the father (Michael Myers of Halloween), the son (Jason of Friday the13th fame, a knockoff), and the unholy spirit, Freddy Krueger of the Nightmare on Elm Street films. The spectral man who haunted the nightmares of unsuspecting teenagers with deadly consequences, Freddy (as played by Robert Englund) was a truly frightening bogeyman and icon for the '80s. Unlike the hockey-masked Jason, who dispatched horny teenagers with mechanical and monotonous ease (he never talked, never took off his mask), Freddy was a truly creative and diabolical villain, with a sadistic and blackly funny personality. The hallmarks of the Nightmare on Elm Street series were imaginatively gruesome suspense pieces, set in the overactive imaginations of the teen victims. The first film of the series, Wes Craven's truly intelligent and scary film, was so hugely successful it begat not one, not two, but six more sequels, each pretty much diluting the originality and horror of its predecesor. (Horror fans will fondly remember Drew Barrymore's assertion in Scream that the first Nightmare film was great but all the rest sucked.) Still, there's fun to be had in the remaining films in the series, seeing as a number of aspiring filmmakers cut their teeth on the continuing saga of Freddy. Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) and Chuck Russell (The Mask) worked on the third installment, Dream Warriors (starring a young Patricia Arquette), and Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2) came to prominence with the ingeniously macabre fourth film, The Dream Master, coscripted by Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential). Craven and original star Heather Langenkamp did return for the last film, New Nightmare, which presaged the tongue-in-cheek postmodernism of the Scream films and resharpened Freddy's ability to scare. --Mark Englehart

Director's Series, Vol. 3 - The Work of Director Michel Gondry Director's Series, Vol. 3 - The Work of Director Michel Gondry
List Price: $24.98
Sale Price: $11.00

Beck, Foo Fighters, Kylie Minogue, and The White Stripes are just a few of the top musical acts whose videos owe their distinctive look to filmmaker Michel Gondry. Along with music videos from these and other artists, this compelling collection also features some of Gondry's short films (including Jim Carrey in "Pecan Pie") and TV commercials, the two-part documentary "I've Been Twelve Forever," and much more. 5 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo.

The Work of Director Michel Gondry invites the lucky viewer into a wonderland of childlike imagination. Before the Versailles-born Gondry turned his creative ingenuity to feature films (beginning with the underrated Human Nature and the 2004 Jim Carrey comedy Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), these 27 music videos and assorted "stories and things" formed a legacy of supreme cleverness, suggesting a creative lineage from the pioneering film magic of Georges Méliès to the groundbreaking experimental films of Norman McLaren. It's perfectly fitting that the accompanying 75-minute documentary is titled "I've Been 12 Forever," because Gondry (b. 1964) never lost the sense of wonder and inventiveness that children display when their minds are allowed to flourish in a creative environment. No wonder he's best known for his dazzling collaborations with Icelandic pop star Björk, resulting in music videos (seven included here) that redefined the magical potential of the medium. Each, in its own way, is a masterpiece of the fantastic. What's also remarkable about Gondry's work is its technical progression, from the homemade crudeness of his earliest videos for the French band Oui Oui, to the technical wizardry of Kylie Minogue's "Come Into My World," in which the Australian pop star is seamlessly multiplied as she strolls around a busy Parisian intersection; like many of Gondry's videos, it's a stunning "how-did-they-do-that?" work of art, reminiscent of Zbigniew Rybcynski's prize-winning 1982 short "Tango." From the hilarious dreamworld of the Foo Fighters' most popular video "Everlong" to the painstaking pixilation of Gondry's videos for the White Stripes (one made entirely of animated Lego blocks), this DVD is packed with Gondry's tireless pursuit of perfection; he'll do whatever's necessary, no matter how simple or complex, to achieve perfect harmony between song, artist, and visual concept. All the while, he's drawing from a seemingly endless well of inspiration, as evident in the delightful 52-page booklet of stories, drawings, photos, and interviews that chronicle the eternal sunshine of a brilliant mind. --Jeff Shannon

Director's Label Series Boxed Set - The Works of Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham, and Michel Gondry Director's Label Series Boxed Set - The Works of Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham, and Michel Gondry
List Price: $59.98
Sale Price: $46.67

Four-disc set includes "The Work of Director Spike Jonze," "The Work of Director Chris Cunningham," "The Work of Director Michel Gondry," and a disc of rare and new works by Jonze and Gondry.

The Work of Director Spike Jonze When you experience The Work of Director Spike Jonze, you enter a world where anything can happen and frequently does. From the innovative director of Being John Malkovich and Adaptation., this superior compilation of music videos, documentaries, interviews, and early rarities offers abundant proof that Jonze is the real deal--a filmmaker ablaze with fresh ideas and fresh ways of filming them. While collectors will regret that only 16 of Jonze's 40+ music videos are included here, this glorious sampling represents the cream of Jonze's bumper crop, and for sheer ingenuity, it doesn't get any better than this. From the Beastie Boys' popular TV cop-spoof "Sabotage" to the intensely disciplined backwards-filming technique of the Pharcyde's "Drop," it's clear that Jonze has an affinity for inventive street theater, culminating in the sad/happy vibe of Fatli! p's introspective "What's Up Fatlip?" and the pop-jazz effervescence of Bjork's "It's Oh So Quiet." Technical wizardry is also a Jonze trademark, especially in the elaborate "Happy Days" nostalgia of Weezer's "Buddy Holly" and the graceful fly-wire dancing of Christopher Walken to Fatboy Slim's pulsing "Weapon of Choice." No doubt about it: Every one of these videos is an award-worthy testament to Jonze's ability to combine hard work with fun-loving spontaneity. Accompanied by an informative 52-page booklet, this two-sided DVD also explores Jonze's artistic evolution with an entertaining selection of video rarities and three half-hour documentaries, the best being a revealing and very funny interview with rapper Fatlip after his dismissal from the Pharcyde. Commentaries for the music videos are consistently worthwhile, supporting Jonze's own belief that his best videos were made for artists whose work he genuinely enjoyed. Lucky for us, his pleasure is infectious. The Work of Director Chris Cunningham Like the other volumes in the acclaimed Director's Series, The Work of Director Chris Cunningham offers a feast of visual ingenuity, with one major difference: Unlike the relatively playful brightness of Jonze and Gondry, Cunningham wants to involve you in his nightmares. From the urban monstrosities of Aphex Twin's "Come to Daddy" to the limb-shattering weirdness of Leftfield's "Afrika Shox," Cunningham's music videos emphasize the freakish and the bizarre, but they are also arrestingly beautiful and otherworldly, as in the aquatic effects used for Portishead's "Only You," combining underwater movements with ominous urban landscapes. Some of Cunningham's shock effects are horrifically effective (his 'flex" video installation, excerpted here with music by Aphex Twin, is as disturbing as anything conjured by David Cronenberg), while others are cathartic or, in the case of Aphex Twin's "Windowlicker," outrageously amusing. And while the eerie elegance of Madonna's "Frozen" arose from a chaotic production, the signature work in this collection is clearly Björk's "All Is Full of Love," a masterfully simple yet breathtaking vision of intimacy involving advanced robotics and seamless CGI composites. In these and other videos, Cunningham advances a unique aesthetic, infusing each video and commercial he makes with a dark, occasionally gothic sensibility. That these frequently nightmarish visions are also infectiously hypnotic is a tribute to Cunningham's striking originality. The Work of Director Michel Gondry The Work of Director Michel Gondry invites the lucky viewer into a wonderland of childlike imagination. Patricia Arquette

We've all been there. It's Saturday night and you and your significant other decide to stay in and snuggle on the couch while watching a movie. It's a wonderful idea, and you are both looking forward to a relaxing evening. Then the tough part comes, deciding what to watch. She wants to watch something romantic and/or thought provoking and intelligent. He wants to watch something testosterone ridden, where hopefully, a lot of things blow up.

Fret not, there is a solution. Believe it or not, there are movies out there that cover the man's desire for action and testosterone that most women won't mind sitting through. Here is my top 10 list of guy movies for girls:

#2 - True Romance (1993) starring: Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette

#3 - Con Air (1997) starring: Nicolas Cage and John Cusack

#4 - The Mexican (2001) starring: Brad Pitt and Julia Rogers

#9 - The Boondock Saints (1999) starring: Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus

#10 - Shanghai Knights (2003) starring: Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson

Movie Review - Beyond Rangoon

Beyond Rangoon is a dramatic movie involving numerous deaths and bloodshed.  The main character of the movie, Laura Bowman, played by Patricia Arquette, has recently returned to her home in the United States to find her husband and young son murdered.  In order to clear her mind and get her back on track, Laura’s sister, Andy Bowman, takes her on a trip to exotic Burma.

This movie takes on some international issues as well based on the fact that Burma is an unstable country led by a military dictatorship.  The filming of this movie was done in nearby Malaysia since Burma and the United States are hateful of each other.  Burma’s government is very aggressive and is not afraid to kill its citizens, especially during a democratic uprising as shown in the movie.  A female named Aung San Suu Kyi, still alive and on house arrest today, was responsible for creating hope and joy that democracy would one day take over Burma.

While parading with her supporters in Burma, Aung San Suu Kyi was met by military force.  She forced the men with guns drawn to stand aside while she continued her march with Laura Bowman watching the whole time.  Bowman would later return to her hotel after watching Aung San Suu Kyi with admiration to find that the military police were waiting for her with her sister.  They were all ordered to leave the next day since Bowman did not respect Burma’s curfew laws for Americans.

While preparing to leave Burma for safety, Laura Bowman realized she had her passport stolen the night before while at the democracy demonstration.  She was forced to stay behind in Burma while her sister Andy and their friend flew into a nearby country.  Laura decided that even though there was much shooting and killing happening in the streets due to the democratic uprising, she would hire a tour guide to visit the countryside.  Her tour guide takes her through numerous military checkpoints while bribing the military guards in his 1970’s Chevrolet.  The two of them eventually stop by a house full of Burmese college students who are talking of their love for Aung San Suu Kyi.  However, after a brief stay, news reaches them that the military is coming to kill them all since they are not in line with the dictatorship’s beliefs.

The group piles into three cars and leaves for the local train station.  The tour guide ends up being shot while trying to escape after the military recognizes him as a professor and rebel against the dictatorship.  Laura, who had already boarded the train to leave, comes back to save the professor and drives him away in the Chevrolet.  They end up being pursued by the military who are trying hard to kill them, when Laura drives the professor’s car into a river.  The two must swim down the river under some brush while being shot at in order to escape.

They eventually find a local Burmese man with two young boys who take them down river to find medicine.  The professor has been shot in the chest and is fading quickly, but Laura Bowman is a doctor and can save him if they can find medicine and surgical tools.  Laura and the professor eventually stop at a Burmese village where Laura sneaks through military guards and finds a medical structure.  She obtains her tools and medicines and is ready to leave when a guard catches her.  He decides not to kill her, but instead wants her to perform sexual favors.  She was lucky enough to borrow a gun from the man who floated her down the river in his boat, and shoots the military guard in his leg allowing her to escape.

Bowman and the professor board the boat again and float down the river more until they get back onto land and attempt to escape to Thailand.  There are thousands of people still being killed and trying to flee the country, but the two manage to board an ex-military truck full of refugees on their way to safety.  Again, they are chased down by a military jeep which forces them off the road and into the river again.  Laura and the professor manage to escape again with many of the refugees, and start wandering through the forest.

After walking through the forest for several hours, they are again met by military resistance.  The common theme in this movie is that the Burmese military does not care who you are; if you look suspicious they will not hesitate to kill.  A friendly, underground-type military group also arrives and fights off the cruel military group allowing the refugees a chance to cross a bridge over the river and safely enter Thailand.  The dictatorship military keeps firing rockets and guns from afar and kills another three or four refugees when they had safety in sight.  A young man is killed while holding his baby and is forced to hand off his child to his wife while he floated down river to his death.  Laura makes sure to comfort his wife once she and the professor cross the bridge into Thailand.

Overall, this movie was very intense and somewhat cheesy at times.  There is some obvious bad acting by some of the foreign actors in the movie.  Also, at the end, the bridge to safety in Thailand has a big sign that reads “Welcome to Thailand”.  This part of the movie seemed very unrealistic and like it was too happy of an ending.  When everyone crosses into Thailand there is a Red Cross hospital set up where Laura puts her skills to work in caring for all of the injured Burmese people.  This movie had a very good plot and gives much history about Burma and its diplomatic relations with the world.  I rate this movie a 3.5 out of 5.
