The History of Rock and Roll The History of Rock and Roll
List Price: $39.98
Sale Price: $9.95

Serving as an introduction for neophytes and a refresher course for experts, The History of Rock and Roll is a mammoth and, when considered on its own terms, frequently successful undertaking. The series, which was first presented in 1995, consumes some 578 minutes, with 10 episodes (there are no bonus features) spread out over five discs. Its pedigree (executive producers include Quincy Jones, while respected writers Peter Guralnick and Greil Marcus are listed as consultants) is impressive, as is its scope, beginning in the pre-rock days of bluesman Muddy Waters and boogie woogie master Louis Jordan and continuing through the death of Kurt Cobain and the birth of the Lollapalooza festival in the mid-1990s. Along the way, dozens of big-name performers (with the notable exception of the Beatles) are on hand to lead us through the story. On the minus side, the format--clips of musical performances cut short by a parade of talking heads--while typical of the genre, will frustrate those who come for the music alone. Nor is it likely that anyone who studies such things will find much here that hasn't already been seen. To be sure, there are some terrific moments, like the profile of Bob Dylan (in part 5, "Plugging In"), some cool clips of relatively obscure legends like James Burton and T-Bone Walker (in part 7, "Guitar Heroes"), and rarely seen live bits with Jimi Hendrix, Steely Dan, Iggy Pop (goofing on the Dinah Shore Show in '77), and many others scattered throughout the set. Part 8, which chronicles the '70s, is surprisingly compelling (one forgets how many major artists--Bruce Springsteen, Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder--came into their own in a decade remembered largely for disco and faceless arena rock), while part 9, "Punk," is arguably the most entertaining of the lot. In the end, it's the lack of complete musical performances that is the set's Achilles' heel. Then again, with their appetites whetted here, perhaps viewers will move on to other, more detailed looks at their heroes--beginning with, say, The Beatles Anthology. --Sam Graham

Features include: •MPAA Rating: PG•Format: DVD•Runtime: 113 minutes

With only one major star (Denzel Washington), an appealing cast of fresh unknowns, and a winning emphasis of substance over self-indulgent style, Boaz Yakin's Remember the Titans is, like Rudy before it, a football movie that will be fondly remembered by anyone who sees it. Set in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1971, the fact-based story begins with the integration of black and white students at T. C. Williams High School. This effort to improve race relations is most keenly felt on the school's football team, the Titans, and bigoted tempers flare when a black head coach (Washington) is appointed and his victorious predecessor (Will Patton) reluctantly stays on as his assistant. It's affirmative action at its most potentially volatile, complicated by the mandate that the coach will be fired if he loses a single game in the Titans' 13-game season. The players represent a hotbed of racial tension, but as the team struggles toward unity and gridiron glory, Remember the Titans builds on several subplots and character dynamics to become an inspirational drama of Rocky-like proportions. Yakin--whose debut, Fresh, was one of the best independent films of the 1990s--understands the value of connecting small scenes to form a rich climactic payoff. Likewise, Washington provides a solid dramatic foundation (his coach is obsessively harsh, but for all the right reasons) while giving his younger co-stars ample time in the spotlight. The result is a film that achieves what it celebrates: an enriching sense of unity that's unquestionably genuine. (Ages 9 and older) --Jeff Shannon

Davy Crockett -Two Movie Set Davy Crockett -Two Movie Set
List Price: $14.99
Sale Price: $5.64

It's a double dose of Davy. First up, compiled from three episodes of the hit TV series, Disney's first Crockett adventure stars Fess Parker as the man who was "born on a mountaintop in Tennessee." Follow Crockett from his days as an explorer and settler, to his Congressional career, and to the fateful last stand at the Alamo. Buddy Ebsen, Hans Conried, Kenneth Tobey also star. Then, our favorite frontier hero (Parker) is back (and looking none the worse for having died at the end of the first film) and ready to take on the mighty Mississippi in "Davy Crockett and the River Pirates." Watch Davy and legendary keelboatman Mike Fink race to New Orleans, then team up to stop river bandits disguised as Indians. With Ebsen, Jeff York. 174 min. total. Standard; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital mono, Spanish Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: Spanish, French; bonus short "The Lone Chipmunks" (1954).

RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN BOX SET COLLECT - DVD Movie

The Rodgers & Hammerstein Collection contains film versions of the five major works by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, who helped define the American musical landscape and rewrite the direction of musical theater. After enjoying extremely successful careers working with others, Rodgers and Hammerstein first teamed up in 1943 for the prairie tale Oklahoma!, with songs including "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" and "People Will Say We're in Love." The subsequent 1955 film starred Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones, who teamed up again for 1956's Carousel. While that film's dark nature made it less popular than its predecessor, the score ("If I Loved You," "You'll Never Walk Alone") was Rodgers's favorite. The King and I (also 1956) featured stage star Yul Brynner as the King of Siam and Deborah Kerr as schoolteacher Anna Leonowens, who must learn Asian customs even as she tries to instill some of her Western ones. The somewhat bloated version of South Pacific (1958) follows two couples during World War II and features standards such as "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair" and "Some Enchanted Evening" from stars Mitzi Gaynor and Rossano Brazzi. The last film, The Sound of Music (1965), proved to be the most popular, with Julie Andrews winning the hearts of seven children and their father with her blissful songs. And if the perhaps saccharine music and plot may test the patience of some, there's no doubt that songs such as "My Favorite Things" and "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" have charmed audiences around the world for decades. Accompanying the Big 5 in this set is the relatively minor State Fair from 1945 (though it does have "It Might as Well Be Spring" and "It's a Grand Night for Singing"). Some may expect and prefer other entries in the R&H canon such as Flower Drum Song or the television production Cinderella, but those were produced by different studios. This 12-disc set from 2006 includes the two-disc special editions of each film, remastered and anamorphically enhanced for widescreen TVs (except State Fair, which was shot in traditional 1.33:1 aspect ratio). Bonus features include the Todd-AO version of Oklahoma! (which should look better than the CinemaScope version but doesn't); 40th-anniversary bonus material for The Sound of Music, including a commentary track by Julie Andrews; Lilliom, the 1934 film based on the same story as Carousel; and the 1962 version of State Fair starring Pat Boone and Ann-Margaret. --David Horiuchi

Fess Parker captured the hearts of millions with his strong, confident portrayal of the legendary king of the wild frontier. There's never been a folk hero quite like Davy Crockett, and you'll see why when you watch him "grin" down a bear, battle an Indian chief in a tomahawk duel, and fight for freedom at the Alamo. Disney's popular action-adventure inspired millions of children to sport coonskin caps and sing "The Ballad Of Davy Crockett," which topped the nation's hit list for 13 weeks! As Walt Disney himself proclaimed, the story of Davy Crockett, with its entertaining blend of drama, humor, and adventure, will always be a colorful reflection of the frontier spirit.

Sex. Graphic killings. Profanity. Adultery. Flip on the television, head for the movie theater, or open a newspaper and you can t get away from it. How do you raise a family in a world supersaturated with media extolling toxic values that are not your own? Media critic Dr. Ted Baehr and legendary entertainer Pat Boone draw from their own extensive experiences and interviews with experts to help readers understand the power of the media and its influence on families. They also examine the ongoing threats to family values by those in the media who promote a humanistic worldview. Media consumers are challenged to understand their own worldviews, make wise choices and are given the information they need to do so. Baehr and Boone also look at the progress that has been made in family values programming in Hollywood, and offer hope for the future.

Crashing the Dollar: How to Survive a Global Currency Crisis Crashing the Dollar: How to Survive a Global Currency Crisis
List Price: $6.99

Crashing the Dollar crackles with the page-turning excitement of a spy novel or murder mystery as it tracks down those killing the U.S. Dollar, and strips bare the secret agenda and tactics of those behind today's impending economic collapse. The current economic downturn - the worst since the Great Depression - will soon be replaced, this book predicts, by severe inflation that could destroy the value of the U.S. Dollar. The dollar is the world's "reserve currency," used in international purchases of oil and other key commodities, and in central bank reserves that many other countries use to support their own currencies. Inflation is coming, this book argues, because the United States now has combined short-term and long-term obligations of more than $120 trillion. The most politically palatable way to pay these obligations is by "monetizing the debt," running tens of trillions of dollars off the printing press, which will cause the dollar's value to plunge and prices to soar. Crashing the Dollar offers ways to save our Republic and, if we prepare wisely, ourselves from the death spiral of extreme debt and extremist politics that scheming politicians and radical activists have deliberately created. Craig Smith, a street-smart, visionary entrepreneur, aided by former think tank futurist and investigative reporter Lowell Ponte, has produced a financial survival manual for those who love America. Crashing the Dollar book reviews and dollar news are posted daily at www.crashingthedollar.com.

Almost every relationship has undergone a break-up, temporarily or for good. Many have learned to accept the situation and moved on. However, if you want to get your ex back to love you again, you will have to do a little work to make it happen.

Statistics on relationships showed that 90% of break-up can be reversed if you know the steps how to get back your ex.

Take note and study the following tips:

1. Take time to think why the break-up happened? You can go over the events and learn from your mistakes to prevent this from happening again; and

2. Do not make yourself appear pitiful and needy; that you cannot live without him. Show that you are okay and doing well by yourself. You have self-confidence and capable of being happy without him; and

3. As you remain a mystery in your new confident self, he will try to make the first move. Play hard to get and give him the role of pursuing you for reconciliation.

Once, he will be able to put himself in good grace, and then you can finally accept him with open arms. But do so gradually. You also need his assurance that this thing will not be repeated. This psychological technique is just using the way human nature works in relationships. This is the application of the song of Pat Boone in the '50's - The more you ignore them, the more they like your technique. You have now answered the problem of how do I get my ex to love me again.

I Convinced Me I Was Fat Long Before Fat Appeared

It's hard to wrap your mind around the idea that it was you, thinking obese, that made you obese, isn't it? It's true, because thinking is causative. Spiritual or body mind healing can effect a permanent cure though. It is a bit slower and has the added bonus of you gaining in both wisdom and understanding.

That we thought ourselves fat is actually is true, but to get to the point of simplicity in changing your mind takes a substantial understanding. Because I have lost 35 pounds through purely mental means, I know it's possible for the rest of you who are dissatisfied with the appearance of your body. That is an enormous problem in the United States.

I have always been a searcher for truth. I was raised a Catholic. As a little girl, it was easy for me to give up playing jacks or jump rope and dash into the coolness of St. John's Church for a lunch time visit with Jesus. I got a heady rush when I'd smell the incense; I loved wearing flowers in my hair and being in processions. In my mind, the very best thing I knew to do was to be good, love God and obey the ten commandments. I don't want you to get some picture of a goody-two-shoes, because that is not who I was. I simply loved things spiritual.

When I was in the eighth grade, we had a visit from a Vocation Recruiter. She was a Sister of St. Joseph, the same order that taught at my school. Her speech was appealing, and the best part of it was that the nuns got to wade in the creek barefoot on the grounds of the nun's motherhouse located in Baden, PA. Barefoot? Barefoot! I adored going barefoot. And if it was connected somehow to God and being good, I was there.

Being a Prep and subsequently becoming a nun were wonderful experiences for me. I took my search for the truth about life into Prep and the convent with me. I looked high and low. I asked questions by the dozens. I did not find answers that were ultimately satisfying for me. At the age of 26, I left the convent with unanswered questions.

I tried group therapy to discover why I was fat, since diets hadn't worked. No satisfying answers there. I tried pills and wraps and spas and you name it. I can't even count all the money I threw into this search for the truth and a solution.

And then I found the study of the mind. My former husband was studying such a course. I can picture him isolated in his office working through the courses with our baby pulling books off the bookshelves around him. My ex always wanted me to go to church with him. He also was a searcher and it's no wonder we were attracted to one another. I hesitated, still full of the disappointment from my convent experience.

But one Father's Day, he insisted what he wanted as a gift that year was for me to go to church with him. He attended the Church of Religious Science in Los Angeles and away we went. I was amazed! I was brought to tears! After all my holding back on him, I discovered a group of people who thought the same way I did. That was more of a gift for me that it was for him that Father's Day.

I began to study the course materials they provided and I learned that I am a mental being, that my mind created and could change anything it created. Did they have all the answers to all my questions? No. They answered a lot of them and I continued to search until I found all the rest. I now know that life is a science and that there are laws in that science that can be used to resolve all of one's problems. I know now that those laws, once learned, can be used to create any good thing desired. And I know this because I was taught how to use this information and have it actually work.

Was my main problem solved? I am a work in progress. Although a lot of layers have been peeled away and discarded as I unfolded more understanding. This alternative to weight loss has an eternal payoff. I much prefer spiritual healing's slower and more permanent pace than the old diet and exercise treadmill. Doing the work of self-correction is a boon to body mind healing, and you'll ultimately win out by persevering.
