A few years after The Phantom of the Opera debuted in London, Harold Prince unveiled Andrew Lloyd Webber's gothic musical in Canada, in 1989. It was so good that this recording of highlights from the Canadian cast is--dare we say it?--more enjoyable than the equivalent London cast highlights album. No, it doesn't have the authenticity of London principals Sarah Brightman (for whom then-husband Lloyd Webber wrote the role of Christine) and Michael Crawford, but it doesn't have their idiosyncrasies, either, and it does have the richer voices of Colm Wilkinson and Rebecca Caine (who played Jean Valjean and older Cosette, respectively, in the 1985 London cast of Les Misérables). At 69 minutes, the Canadian album is also 10 minutes longer than the London, allowing inclusion of the prologue and dress rehearsal for Hannibal. Of course, Lloyd Webber's melodies--"Angel of Music," "The Music of the Night," "All I Ask of You," "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again"--are scrumptious on any continent. --David Horiuchi

Pantages Hollywood Theatre

This profusely-illustrated 8 1/2"x11" booklet is the 2007 Annual (#34) of the Theatre Historical Society of America. It is an expanded revision of the 1977 THS Annual #1, long out of print. It's 36 pages, and filled with more than 50 large archival photographs and illustrations, and numerous historical details on the famous PANTAGES Theatre in Hollywood.
Designed by theatre architect B. Marcus Priteca and decorated by A.B. Heinsbergen, the Pantages opened June 4, 1930. That evening Hollywood witnessed its greatest, most glamorous and last movie palace opening, with giant searchlights piercing the sky and a live radio broadcast of the event. Invited guests included practically every movie star in Hollywood. After stepping from their limousines and walking down the red carpet, they entered the vast grand lobby, 100 ft. wide and 60 ft. deep - the largest ever built in Los Angeles - flanked by stairways at each end. Overhead was a spectacular vaulted Moderne ceiling in gold and henna shades.
Inside the auditorium, elaborate Moderne decor was everywhere. The crowing glory was the ceiling, a richly detailed confection in an intricate starburst design. The stage was the second-largest in Los Angeles (first being the Shrine Auditorium) and featured a steam curtain at the footlights, a water curtain, and a traveling band-car exactly the size and shape of the orchestra pit. The theatre seated 2,812, although it could have held 400 more; the additional space was utilized for the comfort of the patrons.
The theatre was the last to bear the name of Alexander Pantages, who had sold his vast theatre circuit the year before to RKO and Warner Bros., and was opened under the direction of Fox West Coast Theatres. The opening-night film was the world premiere of the Marion Davies musical, Floradora Girl.

The 460 line from Disneyland arrives at the northwest corner of 7th and Flower, NOT 7th and Figueroa and you can then walk over to 7th and Figueroa and take the Red Line to Hollywood & Vine. Upon reaching the top of the exit stairs, you'll see the Pantages Theatre directly across the street.
Good luck!
