Rita Hayworth, Frank Sinatra and Kim Novak in the film based on John O'Hara's series of story-letters originally published in The New Yorker.

First born in the pages of The New Yorker, then translated into a hit Rodgers and Hart Broadway musical, the title character of Pal Joey had undergone quite a transformation by the time he hit the movies in 1957. He was a singer, rather than a dancer, but more importantly he'd had his rough edges sweetly softened; the callous heel dreamed up by novelist John O'Hara was more of a naughty scamp in the film version. However, Pal Joey remains delightfully watchable for two very good reasons: a terrific song score and a surplus of glittering star power. Frank Sinatra, at the zenith of his cocky, world-on-a-string popularity, glides through the film with breezy nonchalance, romancing showgirl Kim Novak (Columbia Pictures' new sex symbol) and wealthy widow Rita Hayworth (Columbia Pictures' former sex symbol). The film also benefits from location shooting in San Francisco, caught in the moonlight-and-supper-club glow of the late '50s. Sinatra does beautifully with the Rodgers and Hart classics "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" and "I Could Write a Book," and his performance of "The Lady Is a Tramp" (evocatively shot by director George Sidney) is flat-out genius. Sinatra's ease with hep-cat lingo nearly outdoes Bing Crosby at his best, and included in the DVD is a trailer in which Sinatra instructs the audience in "Joey's Jargon," a collection of hip slang words such as "gasser" and "mouse." If not one of Sinatra's very best movies, Pal Joey is nevertheless a classy vehicle that fits like a glove. --Robert Horton

The Rockford Files - Season Two The Rockford Files - Season Two
List Price: $39.98
Sale Price: $21.50

Jim Rockford is back and better than ever in all 22 Season Two episodes of the celebrated detective hit The Rockford Files. Join James Garner in his breakout Emmy-winning role as the cool, calm and collected ex-con-turned-detective who loves to mouth off but avoids using his fists at all costs. He takes his time, but always solves the crime - whether it be blackmail, theft, scams or murder! Along for the ride on this five-time Emmy-winning series are such stellar guest stars as Rob Reiner, Louis Gossett Jr., Linda Evans, Isaac Hayes and Dick Butkus. Also included for the first time on DVD is the original series pilot. With his no-nonsense approach and wisecracking wit, it's no mystery that Rockford always gets his man. Starring: James Garner, Noah Beery, Jr., Joe Santos, Stuart Margolin

"The best detective series ever," according to TV Guide, the second Rockford Files set begins at the beginning. That's because the double-length pilot ("Backlash of the Hunter") appears as an extra. In this episode, Jim Rockford (James Garner) explains to guest star Lindsay Wagner, "I only handle criminal cases that are closed." The first Rockford file also introduces his errant father, Rocky (Robert Donley, who'll soon be replaced by Noah Beery Jr.), detective buddy Dennis (Joe Santos, The Sopranos), and squirrelly pal Angel (Emmy winner Stuart Margolin) with whom he did time at San Quentin (before being granted a full pardon). Season two highlights include the two-part "Gearjammers," in which Rockford discovers his dad's secret life, "Chicken Little Is a Little Chicken," in which Rockford helps Angel fake his death, and "The Hammer of C Block," with Isaac "Shaft" Hayes as a former cellmate who just can't get his name straight—he thinks it's "Rockfish." (The Oscar-winning Hayes also contributes an original number called "Gandy's Theme.") Even when the episodes are less memorable, Garner's easygoing Oklahoma charm and potent chemistry with his co-stars, including lawyer/ex-girlfriend girlfriend Beth (Gretchen Corbett), makes each one worth watching. Like most Stephen J. Cannell programs (Baretta, 21 Jump Street, etc.), The Rockford Files never had any difficulty attracting famous (and soon-to-be-famous) guests. The second year claims such notables as Linda Evans ("The Farnsworth Stratagem"), Stefanie Powers ("The Real Easy Red Dog"), Blair Brown ("The Girl in the Bay City Boys Club"), Rob Reiner ("The No-Cut Contract"), and Louis Gossett Jr. ("Foul on the First Play'). The only other bonus feature is a short, if informative interview with Cannell, who reveals that the character of Joseph "Rocky" Rockford was modeled after his own father. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

The Kim Novak Collection (Picnic / Jeanne Eagels / Bell, Book and Candle / Middle of the Night / Pal Joey) The Kim Novak Collection (Picnic / Jeanne Eagels / Bell, Book and Candle / Middle of the Night / Pal Joey)
List Price: $45.99
Sale Price: $24.24

Hard to believe Kim Novak could lose a beauty contest, but that's just what befalls her as she plays "Jeanne Eagels" (1957) in this stirring (if fictionalized) biopic of the silent screen actress. After Jeanne comes up short in the pageant, the event's organizer (Jeff Chandler) takes her under his wing...and into his arms. Co-stars Agnes Moorehead, Gene Lockhart. In the acclaimed romantic drama "Middle of the Night" (1959), a middle-aged clothing manufacturer (Fredric March) falls for a company worker (Novak) who happens to be 30 years his junior. Despite skepticism and criticism from friends and family, the couple attempts to make a go of it. Glenda Farrell, Lee Grant, and Albert Dekker co-star; from Paddy Chayefsky and Delbert Mann, writer and director of "Marty." Three-disc set also includes "Picnic," "Pal Joey," and "Bell, Book and Candle." 7 1/2 hrs. total. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English (SDH); audio commentary by Novak, others; featurette.

The Kim Novak moment in Hollywood--1955 to 1960--is amply represented by the five movies in The Kim Novak Collection, a vivid portrait of an ingénue at the top. Novak's rise, under the forceful tutelage of Columbia boss Harry Cohn, was incredibly rapid; but then, nobody could miss her movie-star aura after seeing her performance as the small-town beauty in Picnic, in only her second year in movies. Picnic, the first film directed by stage veteran Joshua Logan, is a special experience, a Kansas summertime daydream invaded by a rail-riding wayfarer (William Holden); Novak's pretty homecoming queen is the film's key source of poignancy. ("I was Madge. I was that girl in the Midwest," Novak says in an interview here.) Her starring role in Jeanne Eagels (1957) looks like an attempt to establish Novak as a serious actress, which is one reason it doesn't work. In portraying the addictions and irresponsibility of a famed silent-era actress, Novak's limitations are on display, and the film's overripe melodrama has aged badly. While Pal Joey (1957) is not a masterpiece, it does have a brilliant song score (the Rodgers and Hart classics include "Bewitched" and "I Could Write a Book") and glorious star power: Frank Sinatra is the breezy bad-boy singer caught between older San Francisco aristocrat Rita Hayworth and chorus girl Novak. As she reveals in an interview included in this boxed set, Novak did not do her own vocals on the sultry "My Funny Valentine"--yet her winsome performance makes the song her own anyway. As for Sinatra's take on "The Lady Is a Tramp," well, there's no question whose for-the-ages vocal that is. After making Vertigo with James Stewart, Novak reunited with him for the fun Bell Book and Candle (1958), director Richard Quine's cocktail-era version of a hit play by John Van Druten. Talk about "bewitched": Stewart's a straight-arrow drawn into the world of Greenwich Village witchcraft, of which Novak, Jack Lemmon, and Elsa Lanchester are key practitioners. Middle of the Night (1959) was a project Novak fought for, a serious Paddy Chayefsky script about a 56-year-old garment exec (Fredric March) falling for a 24-year-old receptionist. The rueful tone, full of mortality and regret, is pure Chayefsky, and a de-glamorized Novak is very touching as a lost soul. The handsome prints are accompanied by 10- to 20-minute interview segments between Novak and writer Stephen Rebello; she is not seen, except in long shots during a 10-minute backgrounder called "Backstage and at Home with Kim Novak." Some good anecdotes emerge during the interviews (including why she disdained brassieres and why she's "very much a fatalist"), and the low-voiced actress comes across as much feistier and franker than her screen image usually suggested. That image is neatly summed up in this iconic set. --Robert Horton

Here are some more information for Pal Joey:
Pal Joey

The love of food and all the trimmings that surround it has always been a pivotal part of my life. Recently I had to resort to my worst nightmare situation. I had to try out my abilities at making a calculation of calories to lose weight.

My Doctor and trustworthy friend Gerry, my childhood pal and my best mate through our school years, pulled me to one side and with his arm around my shoulder, whispered the dreaded words - you will have to lose weight for the sake of your health.

To face a low calorie, low fat and low carbohydrate life was a sentence worse than gaol to me.

I have watched two close friends, Joey and Johnny, lose and gain weight several times in the past year. They are still the same weight now as they were when they started out. During the entire year, they were a misery to be near.

They were always complaining about being hungry as well as constantly suffering from colds and flu. I am sure you will understand why I found it so very difficult to come to terms with prospect of having to enter a diet program.

I had always heard it said and I always believed it to be true. That losing weight could be a difficult undertaking. Yet we are bombarded on a daily basis with media advertisements about how easy it is to lose weight.

They tell you that if you just use their newly discovered program or purchase their latest product, your life will be rosy. The more I see happening around me only confirms to me what I originally believed.

Anyway, I was forced to explore the ins and outs of what the whole weight losing business entailed.

I realized early on that my chances of success would largely rely on the accuracy of the calculation of calories to lose weight.

This was a daunting task for an ardent lover of food, but I was determined to succeed. So, I prepared a journal of my favorite foods and used a trusted calculation of calories to lose weight to arrive at a personal action plan.

Before long, I began to understand that it was not as simple as buying a product. My friends had failed in their efforts and everyone I spoke to had similar stories to relate about people they knew.

They had all used various quick fix programs or latest fad products but failed in their efforts to succeed.

Now if you are seriously overweight, and it has started to affect your health then you will need to seek and follow your doctor's advice.

But if you are like me, and only need to lose a few pounds, in my case 27 pounds, then there are several ways to achieve weight loss.

I carried out diligent research on the whole area of dieting and losing fat. Eventually, I picked a proven program to work with and I set about my task.

It has now been 15 weeks since I started but it only seems like last week. The time has flown by so fast that I am totally amazed. I have lost 22 pounds already without any real discomfort or distress on my part.

As part of my plan, I persuaded my friend, Pete, to allow me to take his dog, Fred, for a walk. This was 3 evenings during the week and on Sunday mornings.

It worked out so well for me that I took the plunge and done what I've always dreamed about since I was a small boy. I bought my own dog, Bob, and he and I now take our walks daily. The exercise has been a tremendous help to me in my campaign to lose weight.

At all times I have continued to eat my favorite foods but in a structured and planned way. I am using a trusted calculation of calories to lose weight and I eat 5 meals every day.

The meal portions are carefully measured. The portions are smaller than I would have normally taken in the past. But then I was only eating 2 or 3 meals each day.

To my great surprise and relief, I have never got any real hunger pangs during the period of the program. So far so good! Nor have I ever felt the urge to go on any eating binges or refer to my calculation of calories to lose weight.

My pals keep calling me to inquire how I am progressing. They keep asking me how am I doing it and how come I have been succeeding where they had failed.

I keep telling them, that when I reach my target weight in 4 or 5 weeks time, then they can have total access to the details of my plan. They will then know how they can get in touch with the program to lose weight for themselves.

Tom Pyne's advice for losing weight is that now is the time for you to look at a diet program that actually works. Find out how to dramatically lose that weight and learn about how he solves his dilemma 'my calculation of calories to lose weight' by visiting this link - Calculation - Calories to Lose Weight Losing weight has never been more possible. It is in your hands now, so do yourself a favor, go to - http://www.caloriestoloseweight.info and start losing those stubborn pounds today.

Pal Joey Tickets- Risch Officially Takes Lead

Although he wasn't originally cast in the role, Matthew Risch has been named to the lead role of the musical Pal Joey. The musical had to go on hold after November 21, when the person cast as the role, Christian Hoff, suffered a foot injury. The show was on hold for Risch to learn the role before starting up again not long after. Hoff withdrew from the role, giving Risch the lead role. Before he was injured, Hoff performed the role in the show's previews. The switch is a big change for Pal Joey as they are going from a seasoned lead to a young, fresh face on the Broadway scene.

Hoff has been performing on stage since he was eight years old. The California native was already on the fast track to success at a young age, even appearing on television on a special with Shirley MacLaine. He started getting more stage experience like in the original Los Angeles Company production of Evita. Along with building more of a stage career, Hoff also started appearing on film and in television. Some of his early television appearances include Quincy M.E., St. Elsewhere and Who's the Boss. More recently, he has been seen in shows like Ugly Betty, ER, Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Fantasy Island. In 2006, Hoff appeared in Jersey Boys, where he originated the role of Tommy DeVito. The performance earned him a Tony Award that year as well as a Drama Desk Award nomination.

Although he may not yet boast a Tony Award, Matthew Risch could be working his way there with this very role. Risch was educated at the well-regarded College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, Ohio. He has been seen on Broadway as Carlos in Legally Blonde and as Fred Casely in Chicago. He was also part of the touring show of Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. His appearance in Legally Blonde was with the original Broadway production. He was also part of the recording for the show. The change in the cast means that the official press opening was pushed back from December 11 to December 18. Risch is surely going to be one of the next hot leads on Broadway, meaning fans will want to get out to see him live on stage. You can reserve your Pal Joey tickets at http://www.stubhub.com/pal-joey-tickets.

Pal Joey has been around for some time on Broadway. It tells the story of a charming but conniving performer who dreams of owning his own nightclub. Although he holds the affections of a young girl named Linda, he disregards the relationship in order to pursue an older married woman, Vera, whom he thinks could finance his endeavor. The music and lyrics were written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. They have written together numerous times before in shows like I Married an Angel, Too Many Girls and By Jupiter. Rodgers is also known for his famed teaming with Oscar Hammerstein II. The original book for the show was written by John O-Hara, and Richard Greenberg wrote the new book.
