The Columbia River is one of the most major rivers that the United States has. It's importance to Washington State, and the Pacific Northwest as a whole, is difficult to measure. From recreation, to hydroelectric power, to flood control, to transportation, to irrigation, the benefits that this river brings to the region and country are enormous. For travelers coming to the North Central Washington area, the Columbia River is a great asset that can make their trip even better, especially if the traveler is interested in water recreation of any kind.

Here is a look at five great stretches of the Columbia River that any traveler coming to North Central Washington could enjoy.

Lake Roosevelt

Also known as Franklin D. Roosevelt Lake, this body of water stretches from the Canadian border all the way up to the back side of the Grand Coulee Dam. This stretch of the river is known and appreciated by a number of water recreation enthusiasts, including anglers, boaters, jet skiers, water skiers, kayakers, and those that just like to spend their days out on the cool refreshing water of the Columbia River.

Rufus Woods Lake

Rufus Woods Lake is the name of the reservoir behind the Chief Joseph Dam. This part of the river stretches for 51 miles and is one of the least accessed parts of the river as it is a little out of the way and has fewer access points than other areas. Bridgeport State Park is located adjacent to the dam and is a popular destination for those wanting to get out on this interesting and enjoyable stretch of water.

Lake Entiat

Sometimes referred to as Rocky Reach Reservoir, Lake Entiat is the stretch of water backed up behind Rocky Reach Dam. This is a popular water recreation area used by people on the east side of the river, both around the community of Entiat as well as further north near Chelan, and those on the west at Daroga State Park, Orondo, and Lincoln Rock State Park. Fishing, kayaking, boating, water skiing, jet skiing, and swimming are all enjoyed on this stretch of the Columbia River.

Lake Wanapum

The water backed up by the Wanapum Dam, located just south of the town of Vantage and the Vantage Bridge, is known as Lake Wanapum. This stretch of the Columbia River is one of the more scenic in the area as it passes by rich agricultural land on it's northern and southern stretches, but in the middle it carves it's way through the Columbia River Gorge. There is even a very popular outdoor concert amphitheater in the area that uses this stretch of the river as a backdrop. Crescent Bar is a fun resort community that sits right on the shores of the river just before it enters the high rocky cliffs of the gorge. This run of the river is somewhat unique in that, as opposed to other areas of the river, most of it does not have a roadway running along it's shores. This stretch of the river sees a good many recreational boaters enjoying it.

The Hanford Reach

The Hanford Reach, the name of the stretch of river that is located above the Tri Cities but below Wanapum Dam, the last free flowing stretch of the Columbia River in the United States. The water here is not impounded by any dam and flows much as it did in the days before the region was settled. It is also a protected natural area now and is a wonderful place to experience.

The big river is a huge part of life in North Central Washington. Columbia River photos show just how majestic this amazing body of water is. It provides affordable hydroelectric electricity, outdoor recreation possibilities, great scenic areas, and so much more.

North Central Washington is a fantastic area to visit for a day, weekend, or even longer. There is a lot to do in all parts of the region and there are a number of reasons that those who love the great outdoors continue to flock to this beautiful area of the country.

Ford Takes Top Plant, Tops Five Model Segments

For the first time since 1999, a North American assembly plant receives the Platinum Plant Quality Award for producing vehicles yielding the fewest defects.

J.D. Power has given the Platinum Plant Quality Award for producing vehicles with the fewest defects to Ford's Wixom Assembly Plant in Michigan, which stopped making cars last May 31. The Detroit-area plant produced the Lincoln Town Car, which averages 35 problems per 100 vehicles. Plant awards are based solely on defect counts.

Other honorees among North and South American plants are the General Motors Oshawa 2 plant in Ontario, Canada -- which produces the Buick LaCrosse and Pontiac Grand Prix, for the Silver Plant Quality Award; and American Honda’s East Liberty, Ohio, plant, which produces the Honda Civic Sedan and Honda Element, for the Bronze Plant Quality Award.

In the Asia Pacific region, Toyota’s Kyushu, Japan, plant, which produces the Lexus ES 350, Lexus IS 250/IS 350, Lexus RX 350, Lexus RX 400h and Toyota Highlander/Highlander Hybrid received the Gold Plant Quality Award.

The Silver Plant Quality Award went to another Toyota plant -- Toyota’s Fujimatsu, Japan, plant, which produces the Toyota Prius. American Honda’s Sayama, Japan, and Suzuka, Japan, plants tied for the Bronze Plant Quality Award. The Sayama plant produces the Acura RL, Acura TSX, Honda Accord Sedan/Hybrid Sedan and Honda CR-V. The Suzuka plant produces the Honda Civic Sedan/Hybrid Sedan, Fit and S2000.

BMW’s Regensburg, Germany, plant, which produces the BMW 3-Series Coupe and 3-Series Sedan, received the Gold Plant Quality Award for Europe.

The Silver Quality Plant Award meanwhile went to the Mercedes-Benz Sindelfingen, Germany, plant, which produces the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, CL-Class, CLS-Class, E-Class Sedan, E-Class Wagon, and S-Class. Audi’s Neckarsulm, Germany, plant, which produces the Audi A6 Avant, A6 Sedan, A8 Sedan, RS 4 Sedan, S6 Sedan and S8 Sedan, received the Bronze Plant Quality Award.

The 2007 Initial Quality Study is based on responses from more than 97,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2007 model-year cars and trucks surveyed after 90 days of ownership. The study is based on a 228-question battery designed to provide manufacturers with information to facilitate problem determination and drive product improvement.

Aside from getting the Platinum Plant Quality Award for producing vehicles yielding the fewest defects, Ford Motor Company also took five top model segment awards -- more than any other automobile corporation This Year -- in the J.D. Power and Associates 2007 Initial Quality Study released Wednesday last week.

In the study, Ford earned model segment awards for the Ford Mustang, Lincoln Mark LT, Lincoln MKZ, Mercury Milan, and Mazda MX-5 Miata. Mazda, maker of top of the line Mazda water pump, is 33.4 percent owned by Ford.

Ford's Lincoln nameplate, which received two segment awards, improved to rank third in 2007, climbing from the 12th spot in 2006.

The Initial Quality Study serves as the industry benchmark for new-vehicle quality measured at 90 days of ownership and captures problems experienced by owners in two distinct categories -- quality of design and quality of production.
