When people think of New York City, one of the first thoughts they have, after the famous buildings, is Broadway. The Great White Way, as it was known in decades past, is home to some of the best NYC nightlife on the face of the earth.

There are thirty-nine professional theatres that you will find actually on Broadway or near Broadway in New York City. Famous names, such as the Winter Garden, the Shubert, the Palace, the New Amsterdam, the Majestic and the Lyceum as just a handful of the fabulous houses where today's exciting Broadway plays and musicals are presented to the public. Tickets are listed at exclusive prices; if you and a friend decide to go out for a simple dinner and a show, expect to pay in the $500 range and much more for box seats and more elaborate dining fare.

Musicals are not to be missed as a vibrant part of NYC nightlife in Manhattan. Old favorites such as Chicago, Grease, Gypsy, Guys and Dolls, South Pacific and Pal Joey can be enjoyed, as can new material such as Spamalot, Hairspray and Wicked. Straight plays also abound on Broadway. You might select from David Mamet's Speed-the-Plow or American Buffalo, Peter Shaffer's Equus, Tracy Letts' comedy August: Osage County, and Anton Chekhov's immortal classic The Seagull, among several currently in production.

There are many Broadway plays that were adapted from other mediums, including popular films. Shows such as Shrek, The 39 Steps, Wicked, Young Frankenstein, Billy Elliot the Musical, The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, White Christmas, Mary Poppins and others. Avenue Q was inspired from the television show Sesame Street, yet it offers an adult-themed play.

A big part of the Theatre District's NYC nightlife are the spectacular older theatres. There is a vibe in these old houses of eras past, when people flocked to the theatres to see the latest plays, and that aura continues today. People get dressed to the nines to attend the theatre, and there is a spirit of camraderie and bon vivant as the audience settles in together as a group to participate in the experiences that the show offers. Some of the theatres, such as the Winter Garden, are vintage houses. After Cats closed its nineteen-year run there, the interior of the house was restored to what it looked like in the 1920s. This is one of the hotspots on Broadway and around town where you can be in the thick of NYC nightlife.

The History of Branson, Missouri

Branson, Missouri is now ranked #1 in The Best Value for the Money Spent by Destinations Magazine and #3 with The Most to Offer Groups by the same magazine. Though over 8.4 million people a year now visit Branson, Missouri, it had very humble beginnings.

Roots

In 1882, a man named Reuben Branson opened a general store in the area. Reuben was raised as a farm boy, and was only able to get a home-based education. However, he later received formal education at his own expense later in his life. This allowed him to be a teacher in Osage County, where he met and married his wife Mary T. Cooper. They moved to Taney County in 1882 and he opened his general store. This store eventually became the post office, and the area was named Branson, after the owner and post master.  Though he later sold his store to William Hawkings, he became the Taney County Assessor.

Growth

Though Branson is a relatively new city compared to cities back east, it has grown very quickly. Marvel Cave, now a part of the Silver Dollar City amusement park, was bought in 1894 and has long served as a tourist attraction. In 1904, when a bank, hotel and livery were built, resorts started to appear, catering to fisherman and travelers. Already, it was starting to be a resort town. However, the town wasn't officially incorporated until April 1st, 1912, with 1,200 people then residing in the town.

The People

Many well-known people traveled through the area of Branson, Missouri throughout the years. Jesse James and his brother Frank roamed this land, and were heroes that are still celebrated today. Harold Bell Wright's novel Shepherd of the Hills, written in 1907, was the first to throw Branson into the tourist limelight. The first five episodes of The Beverly Hillbillies were set in the Branson area, and were inspired by creator Paul Henning's trip to the Ozarks as a boy. And the Presley family was the first to take their tour to Branson in 1967.

The Attractions

Tourism skyrocketed in the early 1980's with the opening of several theaters and concert venues, especially the 7,500 seat Swiss Villa Amphitheater in nearby Lampe, Missouri. Silver Dollar City has also always been a popular site. Though it started as just a cave to visit and hold square dances, in the 1960's electricity and cement staircases were added to create what is now a recreated frontier-town theme park.

Nowadays

Branson, Missouri has over 50 live performance theaters with more than 59,000 seats—more seats than Broadway and Las Vegas combined. It is known as the "Live Music Capital of the World" for a reason! It also offers mountain lake frescos, over 200 shops, and an amusement park in Silver Dollar City. Lake Taneycomo is annually stoked with three-quarters of a million rainbow trout each year, making it an ideal location for fishing aficionados as well.
