For all his tattoos and bulked-up frat-boy persona, singer Bradley Nowell had real soul, which made his fatal heroin overdose even more tragic. There's more to this Long Beach, California, trio's debut, released shortly after Nowell's death in 1996, than white suburban punks imitating Jamaican ska music. The band comes up with great songs, notably the catchy MTV hit "What I Got"; spooky dub-reggae undertones, produced by the Butthole Surfers' Paul Leary, to go with the snappy horns; and surprisingly progressive lyrics that attack sexism and other social ills, especially on "Wrong Way." Like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Fishbone, obvious forebears, Sublime become slightly tiresome after 17 songs, but the band is great in short doses. --Steve Knopper

The quality of the restoration and definition on Blu-ray is nothing short of extraordinary, even on the most vintage of the 50 cartoon shorts featured here. The three discs contain cartoons offering classic tales starring Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Pepé LePew, the Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote, and some of the best supporting characters from this classic Warner Bros. lineup, like Foghorn Leghorn (one short features a pining, rhyming, absolutely thunderstruck "Lovelorn Leghorn," which is priceless). There is also a wealth of material for the true collector. Each boxed set in this limited edition is numbered, and the box includes a small book on the history of the creation of the characters and early cel by cel cartooning. And no Looney Tunes collection would be complete without material on creator and animator extraordinaire Chuck Jones. And the other discs offer even more commentaries, by the voice-over actors and animators, as well as alternate audio tracks. It's almost like being able to be right in the animators' creative room, trying ideas on for size. But the stars of this collection are the Wascally Wabbit and his sidekicks, timeless animated characters, and relatable, entertaining story lines that appeal to generations. It's the Blu-ray equivalent of comfort food, without any of the pesky calories. CHRONOLOGICAL DONALD, THE-VOLUME 2: 1942

As the number of cartoons in The Chronological Donald series indicates, Donald Duck was Walt Disney's biggest star during the '40s and '50s. Between 1941 and 1965, the studio made 106 Donald shorts, but only 49 Goofys and 14 Mickeys. With his flashpan temper, Donald was well suited to the more aggressive humor of wartime America. Donald's plump derrière got kicked, stung, swatted, or stuck in things with predictably pyrotechnic results. No character had to deal with less cooperative tools, and no character threw bigger tantrums when his equipment failed to work properly. The Disney shorts of this era offer beautiful animation, lavish special effects, and elegantly painted backgrounds. But by 1942, Walt Disney's interests had shifted away from short films to features and war work. The artists at Warner Bros. and MGM were pushing the boundaries to make cartoons that were faster, brasher, and funnier. Compared to the work of Chuck Jones, Tex Avery, Bob Clampett, and Friz Freleng, the wartime Donald shorts feel tame. The mystery spoof "Duck Pimples" is one of the nuttiest shorts the Disney Studio ever released, but it can't match the take-no-prisoners insanity of Avery's "Red" cartoons, its obvious model. Any serious Disneyphile or student of animation will want The Chronological Donald, as it's been impossible to see many of the cartoons for decades. The extras include "A Day in the Life of Donald Duck," a 1956 episode of "Disneyland" that features Donald arguing with Clarence Nash, the actor who provided his voice; and a conversation between host Leonard Maltin and Tony Anselmo, Donald's current voice.
